OpenLayers? Yes!

adamwhite's picture

I am seriously ankle deep in OpenLayers on a project right now. This timing is perfect.

Good Stuff!

Looking forward to discussing the openlayers module, it should be a great topic. Count on me for this one.

It sounds great, but. . . .

I'm already double-booked that evening. Would someone be kind enough to share any notes or A/V if possible?

In turn, I'm sure some of you will like an upcoming Drupal event to be announced soon. Please keep the last weekend in April open. . . .

Thanks.

I could do a case study

Carpool from Niagara/st Kits, anyone?

Good idea

adamwhite's picture

There's two from our office going up. If you're driving we could meet you near your place and cover the gas.

Hey Adam...check your email!

SoniaWilk's picture

Hey Adam...check your email! I just sent a second email...hopefully you get them okay. Let me have your address using my email you used earlier. I can pick you guys up from your place, say around 6:30. Sound good?

Thank you very much to the

Thank you very much to the two Daves for the great presentations. It was fun and informative.. and as for the rest of the gang it's always great to see you and have some great drupal talk!

Notes

dalin's picture

If you want to play around with Panels In Place Editor, Panelizer, and Fieldable Panels Panes, check out the Panopoly distribution:
http://drupal.org/project/panopoly

carouFredSel can be found here:
http://drupal.org/sandbox/ethanw/1774576
http://caroufredsel.dev7studios.com/
though you need to do a bit of coding to make it act on a chunk of HTML - there is views integration (a la Views Slideshow) but I don't think it actually works.

If anyone has any questions about anything else that I talked about, just let me know.

Thanks again...and a Question.

SoniaWilk's picture

Thanks Daves for the presentations, and following up with links, and correct spelling for lost souls like me. ;)

Dalin, you had mentioned you did some customizing on caroufredsel for certain functions...what were those again? Reason I ask is I'm interested in only loading the one slide when selected, as you described. Was that custom? Just starting to dabble with it a bit.

S

Yes, we did that for video

dalin's picture

Yes, we did that for video carousels, and yes that was very custom. The basic logic was:
- In PHP wrap all videos (except the first one) in HTML comment tags.
- In JavaScript, as a video becomes active, remove the comment tags, and re-comment the previously active video.

This is especially for devices with constrained resources (namely mobile) where loading a dozen videos will have a noticeable performance impact.

You can see this in action here:
http://www.globalzero.org/our-movement/voices

But this might be considered a fairly advanced optimization (especially given all the custom work it requires). A simpler alternative would be to limit the carousel to 3-4 items.

Quick question

pierremarcel's picture

Hey Dave, at the meetup you mentioned you guys had to changed permissions for the media module file upload page "file/add" from anonymous users uploading files once we allow them to upload videos.

How did you guys do that? I have the exactly same case right now, I have to let them upload youtube videos, but we can't let them use the "files/add" page.

Thanks Dave, I appreciate any help.

Pierre

Yeah, this really touches on

dalin's picture

Yeah, this really touches on a few of the sticky issues around media in Drupal. First you'll need to be using the 7.x-2.0 or 7.x-2.x versions of both Media and File Entity modules. Then you can use standard permissions to block /file/add, but to also prevent access to /media/browser you'll need:
http://drupal.org/sandbox/drothstein/1892304

One day media in Drupal will be mature (/me says longingly).

Thanks Dave

pierremarcel's picture

I'm running 7.x-2.x versions, but I can't find how set the permissions for the file/add if I change my permission I also loose the ability to upload it through my field... but I'll keep trying it. I'll give your module a try too to solve the /media/browser issue THANKS for sharing it!

Yea I feel the same about the media module, but hey we've come along way since image module on drupal 4.7, it's only taking about 10 years... hahaha

... and yes one day media will mature in drupal, we are almost there...

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it should save me time for sure.

Yeah...beyond me, but thanks!

SoniaWilk's picture

I appreciate your reply! I'll be going the option of limiting number of items to show at a time. :)
