Getting Started
You can read the IRC documentation on Drupal.org, but perhaps a faster way would be to simply install XChat and, rehgardless of your OS platform, follow the Ubuntu XChatHowTo.
#drupal-za
The South African Drupal community has an IRC channel, #drupal-za on irc.freenode.net. If you are a local Drupal user come and chat.
A usage example is to join the channel and review the discussion, if any, a few times a day. If you need someone's attention, just start your message with their name and a colon (name:) and their client software should alert them if they are available.
Give people who help out in the community good Karma with their username and two pluses (name++).
It's worth reading the Drupal IRC usage documentation page once you're on the channel.
Names
If you join the channel with a different name to your Drupal user name or real name, feel free to add your name to this list (just edit this page) to help others find you:
