November Meet-up: Nov 19, 2009 7:30pm-9pm State Center Consortium
We are excited to announce our next Fresno Drupal Meetup. This is the perfect opportunity to check out Drupal and what it can do for your web site. We will have one or more local Drupal Users, Developers, or Themers who will demonstrate how they are using Drupal. Drupal Fresno is a great place to network with local geeks and techies. Whether you're a Drupal newbie or a long time user, come sip some coffee and talk about Drupal. If you have questions or need help, you are welcome to come and pick the brains of Fresno's Drupal community.
State Center Consortium is located on the State Center Community College, Clovis Center Campus in Building B Suite 301. We will be in the one story building on the left. Signs will be posted. If you can't find us call (559) 324-6478 for directions.
Please sign-up if you plan on attending. This gives the event organizers an idea about the number of attendees and allows them to notify attendees about any changes related to this event.

Hey
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up, I'll be coming along with about 5 others guys who aren't signed up on Drupal.org yet. We're pretty much all newbies, but a couple of us are working on a project using Drupal 6.

That's great. Thanks for the
That's great. Thanks for the heads up. Are you new to PHP, CSS and web development or just new to Drupal as a CMS?
Newbie/Intermediate
I still consider myself a newbie/intermediate in the area. I've done a couple of sites using Joomla, Wordpress, I have about 3 beta sites up in Drupal. I've always been more of Network Monkey(administrator) and Photoshop lover, and stay away from web developing, but it always comes back to offer me something. Thus I'm taking it as a sign. So I figure I should start learning it and hopefully be able to help out in the drupal community eventually.

Always great to meet new
Always great to meet new fellow geeks, see you on the 19th.
Look forward to it
Glad you guys are coming. It's always good to meet fellow Drupalers/techs/devs in the area! The group is pretty well rounded and there's always Q&A after the presentations, if you guys need help with anything.
Maybe since there is going to
Maybe since there is going to be a small contingency of newbies we should do a more newbiesh presentation. If that's the case what do you think we should present on? Was the plan on someone doing simpletest?
Nice to hear you guys are coming.
Adam
I was thinking the same
I was thinking the same thing. I was planning on talking about "Starting your first module" and using hook_form_alter(), but maybe there else that can be addressed that would help beginners.
Modules
Honestly, i would love to see that presentation on "Starting your first module"!
Helping Drupal newbies
IMO, here are the areas that beginners always need help on:
Nodes? What the hell are nodes?
Understanding Blocks
I've downloaded Drupal, now what?
Using the Sites folder, not the Themes and Modules folder
How do I make it look how I want it to?
Don't even touch Views and CCK till some Drupal basics are understood.
Those are good topics for
Those are good topics for beginners. I'm not sure who/what the other presentation is by/is, but, considering the anticipated attendance of beginners at the next meeting, I think one of the presentations should be about one of those topics. I'm willing to hold off my presentation until the following month to make room for someone who would like to talk about one of those topics.
Maybe future meetings should have one presentation for beginners and the other presentation about an intermediate/advanced topic. That way attendees of a particular skill level don't feel alienated. I recognize that it is difficult to forecast the skill level of who is attending, though.
Vacation from Drupal
Hey now, thanks for all the great help you guys have given me in the couple meetings I attended (and thanks especially to the anonymous guy to my right at September's meeting who turned me on to Jason Chinn's Magic Spark site (http://www.magicspark.com/), with its links to Jason's outstanding Screencasts demo-ing Theming with Zen, Ubercart and WYSIWYG & In-Line Images. After checking Jason's stuff out, I had Zen up and running in no time.
I'm dropping out of this group for now, but it will always be a great resource for newbie and veteran alike interested in drupal and all that it can do.
Best,
Steve
Newbie2
Hey guys I'm following the first newbie Christian to the next drupal meeting. Names Chris Bates l, call me Bates. As much as Christian is a newbie I'm even more so. I have dabbled with drupal on both Linux and Windows, and have only built on, very simple, official site for internal use at Saint Agnes Medical Center. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and learning more a out Drupal.
Good to hear and I look
Good to hear and I look forward to it as well, Bates! Thanks for sharing your experience with Drupal. Drupal Fresno has good group of guys with varying levels of experience with Drupal and web development, so, if you have any general questions that you'd like to see addressed, be sure to post them here or at least make note of them for the meeting. It may help determine what we present on. See you at the meeting!
Here's my two cents. @Lowtrak
Here's my two cents. @Lowtrak I would go ahead with your topic and try to keep it to 20 minutes or less. Then if someone from the group could take one of the topics @daniel-san suggested and do about 15-20 minutes. I think we could appeal to the newbies and old-timers. We could hit the module dev first and then the newbie presentation and questions could close it out.
Here were @daniel-san's suggestions.
Thoughts?
Takers?
Sounds good to me. Mine will
Sounds good to me. Mine will definitely be under 20 minutes. I think the general Q&A discussions at the end tend to take up the majority of the time, which is a good thing.
Seriously, this is the most
Seriously, this is the most conversation this group has ever had. I love it!!!
I am going to do what I can to be free to come to the next meeting. At the moment, there is a schedule conflict. But, we are trying to work that out.
If I can come, I would be happy to lead one of my suggested topics. I love introducing Drupal to new users.
Its D-night
I'm looking forward to tonight's meeting, I want thank you all for being supportive of us newbies. The topics of conversation sound great for some of the people that are coming. I was able to attend BADCamp, so that really help me understand the concepts of Drupal. If anyone wouldnt mind taking a few mins on going over views, cck, and panels with me that would be incredible beneficial to me. =c) See ya all tonight.
