i noticed the mention of workflow_access in the release notes. has there been any discussion on making use of the new acl module similar to forum_access? i would be very interested in that and able to help out with the development. thx.

Sure. sounds good. I think the best bet will be to include some conditional logic (e.g. if module_exists('acl') ....) that could add/override the usual behavior.
