Drupal San Diego Yahoo Group

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I find the Yahoo Groups a very nice tool for arranging meetups and managing a mailing list.

I'd like to start a regular Drupal meetup in San Diego. I'll plan the first one in the next week or so and simply show up. If I'm the only one, so be it :)

I'll definitely post scheduled meetups here, but if you'd like to be involved with regular Drupal San Diego discussions and informal events, please sign up here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/drupalsandiego/

Thanks

Doesn't creating a new group

brenda003's picture

Doesn't creating a new group for a group seem odd? I already have it set to receive emails when anything is posted to this group - so, just seems odd to use an outside tool when it can all be done right here, within Drupal.

could be. if we manage to

could be.

if we manage to get a group going, we can decide what works best and abandon the yahoo group if it's unnecessary.

Well let's sort it out...

Eric Bidwell's picture

Harry mentioned mailing lists, does this group handle that? I would say that it has the functionality of one at least. I've received all of these messages in my email.

Arranging meetups? Does this group have a function to keep track of RSVPs? Does Yahoo? Are there any other things we need to arrange meetups?

Just some thoughts and questions to start.

Add to it and and I'm sure we can come up with some sort of system that will handle everything we need.

I'd like to know answers to

brenda003's picture

I'd like to know answers to these questions, too. I just don't want to unnecessarily split up the group, it's nice having everything Drupal related in one spot such as this. But I'll join the Yahoo group, too, to see what the best option is.

i'm not really familiar with

harry slaughter's picture

i'm not really familiar with the functionality of groups.drupal.org except that which i've seen as a normal end user.

here are the reasons i like groups@yahoo

1) mailing list manager - all posts can be automatically emailed to members depending on their settings. this makes it super easy to keep informed. with groups@drupal, i notice myself not looking at my various groups for months at a time.

2) calendar with reminder emails. events can be scheduled and yahoo will send out up to 2 reminder emails at configurable time periods before the event is to occur.

rsvp? at this point, we don't really need rsvp. i'm going to pick an arbitrary date, probably this week, for a meetup. it will be at a coffee shop with wifi. whoever shows up, shows up.

i would absolutely prefer to use 100% drupal :) if groups@drupal supports the features above, i'd just as soon close the yahoo group. but afaik, it doesn't.

1) I just got this in my

brenda003's picture

1) I just got this in my email box. I think that g.d.o doesn't default to sending email which may be the problem, but it definitely can be set to receive emails from your groups.
2) We can create events but I don't think it sends out reminders.

Whatever solution is chosen is fine with me. I probably won't be able to make it to a meetup for a while, anyway, but it'd be nice to have a stronger Drupal community here. :)

A friend of mine owns a coffee shop in University Heights called "CREAM" and was formerly called "Korova". I am sure he would be stoked to have us have our meetup there. Anyone have a proposed date? I would also like to have some topics this time as a free form bitch session is not the most constructive for the drupal community.

I would love to share a talk called "How to build a Drupal Blog site in 1 hour" Bring your laptops and you could have a new blog site before the meetup is over.

Anyone else interested in this?

A couple ideas...

Eric Bidwell's picture

Since you can change your account settings to get email for these posts maybe someone can manually send reminders for the meeting by posting in the group.

Also, how about Lestat's Coffee Shop in Normal Heights? It's open 24 hours in case we get carried away and has free wifi which I think would be good to have. Depending on the time of the meeting we might even be able to have it next door in the music venue and have some privacy.

New member & meet up

ghope's picture

Greetings to all, as I just joined earlier today. My boss and I are investigating Drupal as a potential portal in a higher ed setting and can definitely benefit from connections to more seasoned users. I defer to group wisdom (!) as to Yahoo versus Drupal for group communication and will be quite happy to meet up with a local group if we can manage to pull together a gathering. We are located in north county, but can meet anywhere.

I'd be interested in

I'd be interested in attending the meeting.

job postings

neusolutions's picture

Hey All,

I just joined the group and I was wondering if it was appropriate to post a job ad here. I'm just looking for someone to help out with a project. Does anyone know of any other places where I could look for Drupal help on short notice?

Thanks!
Balazs

Hey Balazs, Looks like you

brenda003's picture

Hey Balazs,

Looks like you already posted a separate job ad in the group here, which is certainly fine... you could also check out http://drupal.org/paid-services or head over to one of our monthly local meet ups.

If you're not stuck on local help, there's also simply http://drupal.org/drupal-services or something like that.

Great! Thanks for those

neusolutions's picture

Great! Thanks for those suggestions I will be checking out those links shortly...

BTW, how are those monthly meetups? I've been thinking about getting involved for some time, but something always comes up. You know how it is...

Balazs

The meetups are still fairly

brenda003's picture

The meetups are still fairly small and at a coffee shop which limits being able to do presentations very well and whatnot, but hopefully that will be changing soon. Some people are looking into various places we can move to to allow for that. It can still be a good way to meet local Drupalistas, though!

Well, if the meetings are

neusolutions's picture

Well, if the meetings are small enough, less than 15 people, I could probably offer our office downtown as a meeting place. It's not the biggest conference room in the world, but at least we can hook up a laptop or a projector...

Currently it's small enough,

brenda003's picture

Currently it's small enough, but I think downtown is out of most people's way and it'd be nice to find someplace that can handle more people, too. You could always post in the thread which discusses it, though... this is a really old thread, I just happen to be subscribed to it!
