Call for Volunteers - Become a Dojocho!

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

Dojocho is not always the chief instructor or highest ranked person, but reflects an administrative or ownership role.

Hello everyone, today we discussed how we can make it easier for guest teachers to teach Dojo lessons. The goal is twofold; first to make it easy and painless for guest teachers to schedule, plan, and implement a fabulous Dojo lesson, second is to facilitate capturing and documenting the impromptu mini-tutorials that are becoming a staple of the Dojo IRC. We came to the conclusion that volunteers, or dojocho are very important to making both of these goals a reality, and this is a basic outline of what we came up with. Please feel free to edit/add to it.

Make it inviting to teachers

  • Create a sticky note on g.d.o. for teachers to click on and go to a sign-up page. Squidgy has already come up with this page on drupaldojo.com (Uncle Drupal rocks!) as a way to advertise to prospective teachers.
  • Create a sign-up page, preferably on g.d.o., that would include a way for prospective teachers to schedule a lesson. A custom node is called for, so ideally it should be designed on dd.com to show to Moshe with the idea that he might be able to add it to g.d.o.
  • Offer link-backs and/or banners to those who volunteer to teach (exposure is good).
  • Have a page of documentation and links to software resources neccessary for setting up a Dojo class, however documentation should be considered secondary support to help from dojocho.
  • Have teams of dojocho, or dojo volunteers, possibly organized by platform, i.e. Windows, Mac, Linux, who would be able to help an instructor get the technology up and running smoothly to run a dojo lesson with a minimum of fuss. Three types of roles come to mind:
    • Setup - folks that can help an instructor set up the software days or weeks ahead of a scheduled lesson
    • Tech - folks that can help an instructor test the technology, both the day before and in the hour prior to the lesson
    • Testers - folks that can be online to help by participating in the above. Anyone, even brand new users, can participate in this role.
  • A custom node for prospective dojocho to sign up would make it easier to manage a number of volunteers.
  • Ideas for lessons - Primarily, the theme here is flexibility; making it easy for prospective teachers to approach the Dojo. Lesson ideas can come from:
    • Requests from Dojo members.
    • Instructions from project managers on using/helping various projects (an example would be Jeff Robbins doing a dojo on the upcoming Zengine project-hint, hint).
    • Lessons that evolve from Dojo mini-tutorials that continue to confound users (menu-callbacks was cited as an example).
    • Etc.?

Mini-tutorials

It seems if you hang out in the drupal-dojo IRC channel long enough there are occasions for impromptu mini-tutorials that need to be captured and shared. This can be facilitated by:

  • Creating documentation specific to new dojo users on how use screen and/or audio capture software and encoders to share with the dojo.
  • Have a place on dd.com to post mini-tutes.
  • Encourage documentation of these mini-tutes as well; call for volunteers.
  • Etc.?

We need you!

The above cannot be accomplished without having a healthy pool of dojocho to do these jobs. Given the (growing) size of the Dojo community, it would be nice to be able to rotate dojocho in and out of roles so that no one has to do one job all of the time. There is a need for users of all levels to step forward! If you are interested in fulfilling any of the above roles, please comment below.

The need for Dojocho

kermitus's picture

Well I would be happy to do a few tutorials... Unfortunately I have a bit of stage fright... However I would be willing to try and overcome that with a few basic tutorials to get used to the idea... Basicly because my fear would be that If I made a mistake, I would be laughed off the Dojo.. and I don't want that. :)

If all went well I could pull out some advanced things here and there to help out some developers and users. I have all the software necessary to run a quality Dojo video/audio session.

I am still working on moving to my new apt. I think once I get settled in maybe we could talk about some last min sessions when you need them.. Sort of a backup instructor until I get used to how everything works, and used to all you lovely Drupal members that would be watching me... I get goose bumps thinking about it..

but to be honest, I would be happy to help in anyway that I can.. I try to hang out in the IRC as much as I can... Soon I will be able to hang out and help in the IRC a lot more.

I was excited about all the screencasts I quickly viewed a few weeks ago. However I can't seem to find them now. I'm referring to the ones from Lesson #1 up to the latest. Josh really did a superb job demonstrating. The drupaldojo.com site has a new theme now and the reference to screencasts says "no screencast yet", although I do remember seeing them (?!). Torrent may be the best way to go for free hosting...

I Still Have Copies Of...

mpare's picture

I still have a copy, either original or off a vnc sessions, for lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8. I can't really afford to host these at the moment but would be willing to make a donation to help get these hosted and of course more than happy to upload these somewhere for others.

I used Google video to host

jonfhancock's picture

I used Google video to host the OSCMS 2007 videos. It's free, easy, and they have a cool upload helper app, so you can set multiple uploads and let them run all night.

You could also get a hold of Laird Popkin at Pando www.pando.com (he's a drupal enthusiast). They can host higher resolution video, and they make uploading easy as well, though it may not be free.

It Might

mpare's picture

It might work, the last time I did that though, IMO, the quality was not as high as truly needed for these videos. A resolution of dead minimum of ~640 x 480, good ~800 x 600, desired ~1024 x 768. Just if you want to preserve all the details I would say if possible ~ 800 x 600 though 640 x 480 would probably work in most cases.

In that case, Pando is a

jonfhancock's picture

In that case, Pando is a great option. You can do whatever resolution you want. The only limitation is the file size that users are willing to download. E-mail Laird. Tell him Jon Hancock from OSCMS sent you. He may be willing to work out a totally free deal if it benefits the Drupal community.

The setup is pretty cool for Pando. They have a direct download copy, but it also uses bitTorrent to distribute, so you get the benefits of P2P, but the stability of direct downloads.

Um the videos still exist

add1sun's picture

The new theme on dd.com just wasn't showing the links properly. The videos are hosted at blip.tv and vuze so there is no need for additional hosting or other sky is falling measures. You can always search those resources for the videos. The links have been restored. The world is saved.

Let's please get this thread back to the original issue and off this tangent. thanks.

Videos/screencasts

ulfk's picture

Apologies, if talk of inaccessible screencasts belongs elsewhere ...

It should be of equal if not higher priority to make Dojo lesson screencasts easily available. It would be a waste of existing as well as future Dojocho's efforts if their work is not available for other Drupalers.

I haven't gone through the DD lessons comprehensively, but the 3 - 4 I did try and access did not have working links, and this was a few days ago (after 'the links have been restored' message).

Once again, talk of screencasts probably belongs elsewhere, but should not be de-prioritized (IMO)

You're entirely right, and

Squidgy's picture

You're entirely right, and there are exciting developments ongoing with this right now. We should have the announcement ready by the weekend.

But that will only cover the existing videos - to make new screencasts, we continue to require members of the community to step up and record them. We're always one system crash away from 'cast loss when recording a lesson, and we don't yet have enough/any redundancy on that.

I'm not lowering priority

add1sun's picture

But I am trying to keep conversations on topic. There are lots of other video discussions in here and anyone is welcome to start a new thread. But seriously, if people don't volunteer to capture the lessons or help make them continue to happen, then what's the point?

sorry !! but How do i ask questions ?

dipen chaudhary's picture

hi ..
I am new to drupal and I m spending nights at this drupal-dojo collection and I read few lessons, which were very helpful, thanks a lot for that !! But all class notes are wiki pages and I cant comment or interact.. How do i ask questions related to some class ? I mean I understand that its peer to peer learning and I will really think twice before I ask a doubt (Will try to google n search forums for simmilar question!!) but In case I need to ask something desperately, Is there any provision for that ?

And Btw drupal-dojo (the name) for 2 days suggested to me that it has something to do with the amalgamation of dojo toolkit and drupal .. I suppose that was jus the hope ??? or is there any connection?? .. I suggest u to clear up the thing coz many will come here for that combination after googling.

thanks ..
Really nice, I hope to contribute after lets say couple of months ..

Screencasts?

ulfk's picture

Are there any working screencasts? I tried four from the DD lessons list without any luck. One was a zip file that timed out. One was a torrent which I'm not set up for and don't want to waste time with. I was really hoping to watch dimitri's PSD to Drupal theme, which also stalled (as in never started). And the fourth was dimitri's PSD to HTML which was eye-tearing video quality and no sound!

I see 'google is your friend' on a number of forum posts. How about Youtube/Google video??? Easy even for people without a clue (like me; probably like all those hoping to get a clue a DD).

Apologies for the tone, just exasperated. Congrats on the good intentions ...

...

alpritt's picture

The problem with large files is they do tend to time out. Personally the most reliable method I have found is the torrents. I can understand not wanting to bother with this if only the occasional file is available via that method, but if every lesson is available via P2P I think the slight effort it takes to download a client would be totally worth it.

Agreed, consistency would be great

ulfk's picture

(And not consistently unavailable files.)

Also, flash videos/screencasts ala Youtube are lightweight and have yet to timeout on me. Could someone elaborate the drawbacks of using Youtube/Veoh/Daily Motion/etc. ?

Resolution. It's simply

Squidgy's picture

Resolution. It's simply impossible to read text such as code at a youtube's video size. Primarily we use blip.tv because they offer a higher resolution and filesize limit than elsewhere. Drupaldojo.com will expand to have both a torrent link and a direct link for each screencast once times allows - primarily, we're waiting on final approval to host our videos on the drupal.org servers.

In the meantime, I recommend using Azureus or a similar lightweight torrent client - at least one of the community members should be seeding those files at all times.

google support large videos !!

dipen chaudhary's picture

hi squidgy ..
I suppose, google support large file size.. They just demand that u upload files of size more than 100Mb from a desktop uploader ..

Upload Page

Why dont we try to put one on google video and see the response ? I dont know abt the resolution demanded by our screencasts but I saw couple of Google Tech Talk videos and the text was visible ..

alternative video sites

pelicani-gdo's picture

Another option would be viddler.com.
They provide higher resolution videos than does youtube.

Um, back on topic?

add1sun's picture

I know that the video delivery is an important issue for the Dojo but this post is specifically about VOLUNTEERING to help out. So please keep this on topic and discuss HOW YOU WILL HELP with running the actual dojo sessions.

This is not directed at any one person but there is a lot of talk in the Dojo and not nearly enough stepping up. If you want to have input in where the videos go why not actually volunteer to help record and edit the vids too, since if we can't capture them, delivery means nothing.

Thanks

hi ..
I am interested in making a screencast for the things I have learnt in node API, How to go about it ..
Will It be ok, If I dont speak in screen cast as I am shy of doing that ...
I can follow dimitri's approach of writing on a black background about the concept I am handling at the time ... Wot software is best to capture my screen ? I am comfortable both in Linux and Windows ...

Dipen,

We've been tossing around the idea of making an instructional video on how to make a mini-lesson of your very own. The biggest problem is, there are three major platforms to cover, and nobody we know has all three platforms. That would lead to a disparity between the method, since three different people would have to create the HowTo vids.

Maybe someday...

EDIT: Maybe we should run a class on how to make a video, but I doubt it. There's still too much work to do in stuffing these written class materials back into the Handbooks.

ShowMeDo

Matt V.'s picture

You might want to check out ShowMeDo, which has some screencast tutorials on how to set up and use free software to create screencasts. There are tutorials for Mac, Windows, and Linux, most of which use free software.

I can help capture and post

studiophototrope's picture

I'd be happy to help folks who aren't set up for screencast/video capture to get their lessons together. If you're in the Bay Area, I can record yours for you.

Awesome!

Location Location Location

studiophototrope's picture

I'm set up to do everything at the client's location, so here or there, your call.

I use Snapz Pro for screen capture and have a mic and preamp for audio recording. If someone wanted to address the audience directly I could set up a small video shoot with lighting.

If there are people who are looking to invest in their own set up, I can help advise on purchases.

Also if you're shy about using your voice, I can help to either coach or record a voice over for you.

We could even have a dojo party and record a bunch at once if we can align schedules.
