Potlatch

In the spirit of the Potlatch this event aims to bring groups together, each with a contribution to make. Participation will be encouraged from developers, themers, project managers, install profile owners ;-) etc.

List of Attendees (can people who are fairly for sure going add your name here so others know who's coming for planning purposes?)
* Nally (local organizer)
* Andy Beers
* Boris Mann
* Lyal

The Agenda

We're VERY open to suggestions. Is there a particular bug that needs squashing? Do you have a particular itch that needs scratching? Do suggest it here... we never know where it'll lead. For now I have only a few starters, but as they used to say... "watch this space".

Saturday a.m. 9:30 am thru 12:30 pm

  • Building a "Golf Course" install profile from scratch.
  • Andy's Growth of Video presentation

Saturday afternoon Sailing, Canoing, Kayaking
(golf or exploring Montague Park and the Bluffs - for those who don't like water)

Saturday p.m.

  • Divide the Developers from the Designers?
  • tackle Boris' wish list in this extension of the code freeze for Drupal 6? :-)
  • generalized web services API anyone?
  • design for Golf Course Site using photos taken during the day?

Sunday a.m. 9:30 am thru 12:30 pm
share the results of the install profile experience, create another for the attendees favorite site types

Sunday afternoon - Hiking Mt. Galiano (1 hour up)

Sunday ferry leaves 5ish pm.

  • a Golf Course drupal "Install Profile" - Nally, BorisMann
  • Tracking the growth of video online - Andy Beers
    -why it's a big deal
    -what it means for bloggers
  • XML-RPC and/or building a module that will aid in relating to the new google blogger API (I'm wishing on this one i think) -- BorisMann: this uses the Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) ... and it would be fantastic to get this into core Drupal eventually. For now it could be done as a module.
  • themers? designers? want to step in here?

Getting to Galiano

Ferry Sailings of Interest and their current known status

BC Ferries Tsawwassen to Sturdies Bay

Biking is a solid option to consider, however care must be taken with regard to the tunnel under that good ol' Fraser River. Speaking from experience, the best option there is to find a car with a bike rack and throw the bikes on said rack until at least the South Delta Community Centre. If its your own car, I've managed to park at the South Delta Community Centre for free for a whole weekend on a number of occasions. Parking at the ferry terminal is somewhat costly.

The problem with getting through the tunnel on BC Transit (via say a 601, 602, etc. to South Delta) is that you -might- be competing with -many- bikers on the -return- trip for the two meager spots on any given bus. That's why for bikers it's nice to have arranged your way out via a car-rack-through-the-tunnel method.

Biking on Galiano is hilly. You've been warned. :-) Oh... and my car has a bike rack with space for two on it. But said car will only be on-island throughout the event.

Carpooling List

Lyal: We're going to be coming out (looks like 2 of us).. Boris is in for a rideshare from Vancouver - anyone else?

Dinner Saturday Night @ Lili's On The Greens

We'll be reserving spots for dinner at the golf course's restaurant for the Saturday night dinner. That's our one meal indulgence, with main courses @ $32. Other meals will be potluck, using either the small kitchen and BBQ at my cabin or some other yet to be discovered arrangement.

Sailing vs. Kayaking

Depending on wind and number of people, I'm considering offering a sailing outing on each day. The boat is small, and we'd need to have splinter groups of hikers, land based activities as well. Much of how this plays out depends greatly on how many people in total will come.

One nice thing is that if it's very windy sailing is fun. If it's very calm kayaking is fun. So we're covered at many levels of wind.

Hiking

There are lots of great hikes on Galiano. Most pay off with spectacular views after a short trek. Here are two to consider:

Mount Galiano
A 45 minute hike takes you to the highest point on the island. An incredible view looks south and west to Mt. Baker, the Olympic Mountains, and Vancouver Island.

Bodega Ridge
A leisurely hour and a half round trip along a bluff above the Trincomali Channel. You look northwest to the outer Gulf Islands and west to Saltspring Island. Eagles like to soar the thermals off the bluff.

Accommodations

My -small- "Cabin / Home / Place Where I Live" ( 580 sq ft!) is Free (as in available, and also as in beer) for the exclusive use of participants. Martine, Lili and I will be retreating to the boat in the late evenings to free up room in the cabin. The cabin has two double beds (one's a bunkbed), a pull-out double couch circa 1980, a small single bed, and if people really don't need any elbow room, they can throw bags on the small amount of floor space remaining.

Realistically, I'd say there's room at my place for 6 people max, although it has hosted a few more than that. Especially if they're cool with listening to each other snore. There's plenty of room for camping on the grounds at the cabin, but I'm guessing we'll find some other options.

NEW!

Hey peeps--Ariane editing here--I'm not sure whether I'm going to make it or not, but was looking into some accommodation options, and thought I'd share the info I found--I was looking for larger cabins near the golf course that a bunch of people might be able to go in on together so it's not too pricey.

Jasmine Gardens looks like it's really close to the golf course, but I have no idea whether it's available. Only the smaller house (2-2 person beds, one single) looks to be rentable for less than 3 nights, and is $120/night.

Eagle's Nest Retreat is on the "southern tip" of the island, so probably not too far, and is available, and looks really nice (a little more on the splurging side) The main house (6 bedrooms) is $600/night for up to 8 people, $50 each additional person. The smaller house (sleeps 4) is $120.

Finally, Driftwood Village claims to be more of a hostel, and is close to the ferry terminal, and not too far from the golf course. According to the website, they provide free ferry pickup. The cottages can take between 2-4 people each (there are a bunch), and since it's "shoulder season", are between $89-$135/night. Like the others, they seem to all have kitchens, etc.

You are also invited to check out other accommodation options:

BorisMann: got any recommendations on that giant list of places? Camping can be cool...but crashing out in a big shared cottage / cabin is cool, too :P
See above accommodations I found. -Ariane

Dale (aka Torelad): We need to know which ones have WiFi!!! Is there a Lonely Planet guide to Galiano? The Chamber of Commence options seems a little posh.
