Getting our act together

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Let's face it. There will be no more forum improvements in Drupal 6 any more.
Let's get our act together and get truly organized, and that way, Drupal 7 can be an awesome forum machine.
I suggest we can organize ourselves into sub-groups, and that way more stuff would get done.
Some ones could be:
- Forum Studying: studying different forum packages, and see what they do well. (I would be willing to lead this)
- Bug Team
- Etc.

Let's get started now.
Another thing might be abstracting this to a different site. I can set it up here, so post comments here on whether you think +/-, and suggesting different groups.

I think it'd make sense to

I think it'd make sense to start at least one new group dealing with core forums (and maybe one related group dealing with forum-related contrib modules) as a specific topic, rather than as a side discussion to an install profile. It's also a very good idea to start planning for 7.x now so there's a chance of it actually getting in.

I'd suggest just one new group for now, just "forums". Then if there's a need for another group, that could be made later. Relevant posts to DruBB could be added to that group if the authors don't mind.

I'd be interested in working on improvements to the core comment/forum and tracker modules, as well as trying to work out where the gaps are in relation to other module packages.

One fix to core forums that might still go in is: http://drupal.org/node/145353 but it's performance rather than features. However, in that issue a side effect of fixing some of the sql queries would allow for future decoupling of forums from the forum node type ("polls in forums" etc.), that and a more general abstraction of forum module would be a good thing to get going on now, in the same way it's being done with "book".

If you would be interested

If you would be interested in writing some code, great!
By sub-groups, I didn't mean full on OG groups, 'cause I envision like 4-5 people per group.

Well my code writing is

Well my code writing is pretty bad, but I'm trying to rectify that at the moment, there's a couple of specific things I want to see fixed in core forums/comment modules regardless of who codes it, and if it ends up being me then that's fine as long as it doesn't take till drupal X.x.

sub-groups - yeah that makes sense, I still think it'd work better if the main group was simply called "forum", I'm sure some people have missed this whole thing with it being called DruBB.

Well, code freeze is

Well, code freeze is extended, and there are still forum patches which can go in:

http://drupal.org/node/20295 http://drupal.org/node/149327 http://drupal.org/node/145353

and talk of comments as nodes although I've not seen an issue yet. Some of these could make a major difference to the core forum module, so worth your attention.

Hi guys, I haven't posted

Hi guys,

I haven't posted here for a while, my job is killing me.
I am coder, and I would like to contribute code, however, you probably think I'm a lier. I promised a lot, and did almost nothing, the only thing I can say is it's my job. I have this project, that I am working on it since august 2006, and should finish it by Feb 07. Now, there's a new deadline, it should be finished by July 1st, I hope that after I'll finish it, I'll have Drupal quality time.
In the worst case, I finish my contract on 27th of September, and I am looking for quality unemployed time :), so I hope that maybe then I'll have some time to move some things on DruBB topic.

Have a nice day.
