User group meeting
This will be the first of what I hope will become regular meetings of Drupal users in the Capital District. The meeting will be informal--bring your laptops and show us what you're working on. If you've got something particularly interesting that you'd like to present, please email me so I know to block off enough time for your presentation.
The group will meet at the Delaware Branch of the Albany Public Library on Saturday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m.

Authentication and Identity
I'd like to discuss authentication and identity. There are quite a few options to identify people including the core Drupal system, Facebook Connect, Google Friend Connect, Gigya's Socialize module and comment oriented systems like Disqus. I'd like to talk about my adventures in authentication and hear what other people think about this topic.

Access Control
Rob, I've been having some major problems with access control which might compliment this topic nicely.

Open Atrium and Features
Hi, Julie.
I'd like to look at Open Atrium and Features with everyone. I think the Beta4 release of OA will be out, and there are new goodies there which make it even more tantalizing as the way any Drupal shop should manage collaboration between clients and contractors on all projects (above the coding level, which requires Unfuddle or some other version control system).
What kind of attendance are you forecasting?

Sounds Good
Hi Bram,
That's sounds great. So far we only have three people (four counting you) registered for the meetup so be sure to spread the word down your way in case any other Hudson Valleyers want to make the trek up to Albany.

RE: Recruiting
Hi, Julie.
I've just joined the NYC Wordpress Meetup group http://www.meetup.com/wordpressnyc/ and asked if there are Wordpress Meetups in the Albany area. There's good cross-fertilization there.

Version Control Workflow
I've just added this meeting to my calendar, and I would be interested in learning if and how people use version control to deploy and upgrade their sites.
I've spent the last several weeks learning about CVS, SVN, Git and now Bazaar.
See you on March 6th!
Steve
Great Idea!
Love the idea of having a local meetup of Drupal developers. Count me in.
Count me in
hi all,
i'm new-ish to the area and to drupal, having moved here about six months ago to work as the technology coordinator at the Sanctuary for Independent Media (mentioned in some other thread in this group, i believe) in Troy. we've been running drupal for a few years, with help from a number of volunteer developers and designers, and i'm curious to hear from other local drupal-ites.
we're in the midst of converting a number of our database-related tasks to a CiviCRM installation, and if anyone else is using Civi i'd love to chat about it. (or if i have enough time to get things really working, perhaps i could even make a brief presentation on it, if folks are interested).
one question worth posing before meeting up:
is this meeting for drupal site adminstrators? drupal developers? anyone who uses drupal as a CMS? or all of the above?
anyway, i will plan on coming to the meetup in march!
looking forward to it.

Mixed group
Hi Chris,
It sounds like this will be an interesting mixed group of people with different levels of expertise in Drupal. I would categorize myself as an enthusiast with very little coding background although there are developers registered, too. Glad you'll join us! See you on the 6th.

Greetings from Troy
Hi all,
First, I hope the meeting went well! I'm currently based in Troy, feverishly working at bringing the Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center's online presence to Drupal. Although my schedule probably isn't going to let up until mid-May, I'm definitely interested in meeting up with other Drupalistas in the Albany area. We're seeing the beginnings of a big push toward Drupal adoption at RPI, so I'm really interested to learn more about what everyone else in the area is working on, and if there are any common issues we might be able to tackle together.
Out of curiosity, is anyone else heading to DrupalCon SF? If so, we might arrange for a meet-up there - let me know!

I'll be going!

Awesome! I'll be there from the night of the 17th through the morning of the 23rd (staying for the second sprint), so if you'd like to meet up at some point, let me know.
Perhaps we should start another thread, to make it easier to get the word out to others who might be going?
Next meeting
Glad to hear you'll join us and that getting this group together was worthwhile. Rob Safuto wrote up his notes from our first meeting which can be found here: http://learnbythedrop.com/drop/161. I'll arrange another meeting for mid-June which sounds like it'll suit you just fine. Stay tuned for info on when/where we'll meet next.

Looking forward to it!
Thanks for the link! It sounds like there is a lot of great discussion going on, and I agree that there's no replacement for meeting face-to-face. As far as Code Management, there are a few more perspectives on the subject in a similar g.d.o thread here if anyone's looking for some ideas, along with the workflow that I currently use. After managing two sites and seven different Dev/QA/Production servers, the topic hits very close to home for me. :]
Mid-June sounds like it'll work out just fine. I'm looking forward to it!
Meetings
I am not sure how everybody in this group feels about more frequent meet ups, but I am game for that. I always have a project in the works and would love to discuss / maybe collaborate. What is the current, or how often do you plan to meet? I was going to NYC for a while and cant make it down there these days.
Dave
meeting frequency
Hi Dave,
I was planning to have the group meet at least quarterly but if you're interested in more frequent meetings, why don't we discuss it at the next meeting which will be sometime in June? If there's enough interest to warrant it, I'm happy to try to do something bimonthly. I'll post the event time and location of our next meeting sometime after the first of April.

How About Virtual Meetings?
I recently discovered a new virtual meeting site called DimDim that I plan to use for collaboration, Drupal teaching and interviews with Drupal developers. My DimDim account can support virtual meetings with up to 50 people. The meetings can also be recorded and share on the web afterwards. It might be easier for people to do more frequent meetups if they are able to do it from home. I'd be willing to host such a meeting if others are interested.
Rob
good idea
I think we should try this coupled with the quarterly face to face meetings. Rob, can you try to set one up for some time in mid or late April and let us know how to access it? That will be halfway between our last and next (June) face to face.

New Member in Albany, NY
Hi Guys,
I am in the transition of moving from NJ to Albany, NY and I have been in CMS space for the last 9 yrs (with heavy Interwoven and little bit of SharePoint) and Open Source CMS (Drupal, CMS Made Simple, Mambo) for the last 3 yrs.
I see this group is very helpful to communicate each other although I don't see sort of interactive features like facebook/twitter type where we (Albany group) can talk about Drupal stuff on a day-to-day basis.
Hope to see you guys soon for the Meetup!
Thanks

Catching Up
So I never did follow up on the offer to set up a virtual meeting back in March. I got busy with my grad school and family obligations. I'd like to have another in-person meeting soon though. Who's up for it?
Rob
Meetup in Albany
I am interested in in-person meeting in Albany. Guilderland Library has a pretty good size room for meet-ups. I can arrange it if you guys willing to.
Great idea
I'm all for another meeting. If you're willing to arrange with Guilderland Library, I'd appreciate it. I've been swamped with work and have had no time to think but will make every effort to get to whatever you arrange. Early August would work best for me.

Guilderland Library does not have a projector...
The room we used for the last meeting in Albany is actually better for this kind of meeting than what Guilderland has available. Guilderland's rooms do not have a projector available have very few available outlets. Although in terms of location, for me Guilderland would be great because I live about 5 minutes away!
August works better for me too.
Steve
If you're willing to take it down to Chatham or Kinderhook
I'll bring the projector and screen!

Albany Meetup
Hi everyone - I live an hour away from Albany and was so happy to see that there was a group of people looking to meet-up. I'm definitely in. My background: over 22 years of Desktop Publishing Experience and the last three neck deep in Drupal - I've gotten to know my way around Drupal quite well and would love to share and build my knowledge base with others.
Hello, I'm down in the Hudson
Hello,
I'm down in the Hudson Valley, in Hyde Park, but I'm hungry enough for some technical peers (solo freelancer here) that I'd be willing to come up to Albany to get together and meet some of you. I've also thought it would be a blast to have a Drupal group meet at CCK, the chinese restaurant.
Peace,
Vonn
RE: Hudson Valley Meetup
Hey, Vonn.
How are your module development chops? I'm looking for someone with that skill-set. Maybe we should meet prior to Albany? How would Red Hook be (there's a great internet cafe called Taste Budds with great food and coffee, much more casual than Bread Alone in Rhinebeck)/

Mid Hudson Valley Area?
Hi Folks -
I'm in Wappingers, and would like to introduce myself / talk shop with you guys.
Maybe some of us down river folks could meet in the Red Hook area as Bram suggests.
