Screencast system now 150% more badass.

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Thanks to the ever-awesome webavant, we suffer audio hassles no longer! In future, you will not need Skype, Teamspeak or any other audio program to listen to the lesson. Now, the audio is being streamed from the same VNC java page that previously transmitted only video. All you need is a java-capable browser!

I'm really, really excited about this. :D

(Now dmitrig01 talking)
This might work... we are getting reports of distortion... :(
Also, we are implementing a new questions system, where you say !question blah into IRC (or visit a web page and add your question) and it gets submitted for moderation. After one of the moderators approves your question, your question will be asked when the presenter says something like 'question time' :D

Have We Done Any Sync Testing

mpare's picture

First off this sounds like a great solution and makes it easier for the masses to view. Simply click link... Anyways, I just wanted to see if we have done any A/V sync testing. Lag is not a concern but with some audio relays, and video, the delay can be different. Very simple test under optimum conditions is to type on screen 1, 2, 3 ... n and speak 1, 2, 3 ... n at the same time. If a viewer hears and sees 1, 2, 3 ... n at a relatively close interval all is fine, but if the difference is around 8 seconds like some of my poor experiences have been we should at least be aware for when encoding screencasts as those issues are easily fixed.

Again webavant and all involved great work, see you Sunday.

Peace,

Matthew Pare

You're right that we'll have

Squidgy's picture

You're right that we'll have to do more testing, as what we ran through was audio-only without any video component. We were able to hold a conversation without noticeable difficulty, but we're going to do a test run through with dfletcher's setup to make sure everything's fine.

If we do hit a snag, we'll revert back to Teamspeak for this lesson and keep on tweaking the new functionality.

The delay might be different for recording vs. viewing

senpai's picture

I suspect that the delay while recording will be different than the delay while watching, since anyone who's recording will be connected directly to the SkypeBot that's broadcasting the icecast feed, and connected directly to the presenter's hi-quality VNC output (before it hits the reflector). Grabbing the audio directly from the SkypeBot will be the only way to avoid recording your own computer's sound output, which probably has IRC alert noises, random sound effects, and other non-lesson drivel coming out of it.

We'll need a Clapper module

senpai's picture

How 'bout if we make a Javascript scene slate for drupaldojo.com that, upon pushing a button, counts down a visual 3, 2, 1, with a click, click, click sound and then slates the lesson title, date, and teacher three form fields we already have in the db?

We could even put it in a modal pop-up window! That way, the sensei-of-the-day could simply point their own browser at the dd.com site, ensure that someone was recording, and click the button to begin their lesson? No more audio sync issues with recording two different sound sources like we ran into a couple of weeks ago on my lesson.

Less work on post-editing is better, no?
