Hey everyone. Mercury 1.0 is almost ready, and we could really use some help testing things out. As Greg posted, Mercury 1.0RC is on Amazon, and the self install instructions have been updated. The more eyes on it before we call it 1.0 official the better, so if you've been waiting to give it a test-drive, now is the time. We're going to be able to deliver fixes via BCFG2 (which is frackin' awesome), but a bug-free initial release state would be ideal.

Upgrading from ami-e346ab8a 64 bit instance
I just wanted to start by thanking everyone working on Mercury - it really is awesome. So now I have a question that puts Mercury and Amazon to the test. I am currently using Mercury on a large 64bit instance, ami-e346ab8a.
I followed the instructions to configure EBS as RAID thanks to nullvariable, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/36750. I did learn a lesson with configuring RAID about not EVER USING device names /dev/sda -sdg. Start out with sdf. Live and learn.
So now I would like to upgrade my instance to the new Mercury 1.0RC on Amazon. I figure it's a good time to try this now as I am still working on my site and it's not live. This practice will come into play when moving into production and according to what Amazon preaches it should be "rather" easy. Can anyone assist me with some instructions to do this. For example, I would spin up a new large 1.0RC instance and then somehow attach this new ami to my existing EBS RAID. Then, would I just copy the modules and themes over under pressflow all? I am only running one site.
Thanks again to the Mercury team - chules
Just update your vhost and my.cnf
Assuming you are using the EBS for your http document root and mysql data directory, you would re-mount, and then update the config files to point there.
Another way would be to move thigns from the EBS to the new instance.
However, I would hold off for a minute. We're about to release 1.0, and 1.0 will have some really great options for upgrading as we move forward! :)

New Mercury 1.0 instance with EBS for MySql and document root
Joshk,
Since I am early into my project and have been working with Mercury and EBS for MySQL it's probably easier at this point to just build new. Hopefully, this will not be the case when I have the site moving and in full production and it will be easier with the new Mercury products to handle upgrades.
To build what I have so far I used the readme.txt that was included with the AMI during setup and also the article on "setting EBS as RAID", see here at http://groups.drupal.org/node/36750. The original article "setting up EBS for Mercury Beta" was the initial article using just on volume. The instructions were very helpful to "newbies" working with both Mercury and Amazon.
Is it possible to amend the steps and include not only moving the mysql data directory as indicated in the 36750 node but also the steps for moving the http document as well. This really would be a valuable source of information how some best practices fo running Mercury on Amazon.
Thanks again for all those working on this initiative - chules
Yes please, and can you also
Yes please, and can you also please include instructions for apache solr and other perishables?
Any progress on bootable
Any progress on bootable images that will allow for easier startup/shutdown's?
You should be able to convert it
there are several tutorials to convert instance store ami's to ebs bootable ami's ... you could also start with an existing bootable ami and run the bcfg2 - mercury install wiki instructions on it.
Convert Instance Store to EBS Boot
I think that this might be what you're after:

If you try this would love to hear how it worked for you.
Would be great to get a 9.10 Karmic EBS Boot in the AWS community AMI repository that we could use. Aren't there issues with the file system in 9.04 Jaunty.
can someone explain to me in
can someone explain to me in layman's what this pantheon / mercury thing is all about. this is going way over my head.... i just got as far as drush.. would like to play with Aegir, but curious to what this is all about.
re: can someone explain to me in
Pantheon and Mercury are the same thing - Mercury is the old name, Pantheon the new. There's no connection between Aegir and Pantheon, although some folks have been managing Pantheon sites with Aegir.
Pantheon is a the Pressflow version of drupal 6 plus lots of caching to make a scalable, high-volume drupal install. Lots more listed at getpantheon.com (which will be a for-pay Pantheon hosting service) or groups.drupal.org/pantheon where we post the instructions on how to install Pantheon.
Hope this helps,
Greg
