I'd be happy to do a short talk about what we're doing at the OSL in conjunction with the Drupal.org infra team regarding the scaling and performance of the drupal.org web site(s). While I'm not working on it directly, I can talk a bit about some of the changes and issues we've been dealing with recently as drupal.org grows.
One of the things I've also wondered is how typical a use case d.o is --
It'd be great to hear a breakdown of the different choices made to improve performance of d.o, from the hardware choices to the server config to caching options, etc.
On a related note, it'd also be interesting to hear/discuss how typical a use case d.o is -- in thinking this through, the mission/purpose of d.o expose it to a range of stresses not typically present on most drupal sites.
Looks like "Drupal Performance" is the underlying theme here. Sounds like a great topic to me, So unless anyone objects lets set that as the subject for the next meet.
That way Matt and gchaix can take turns discussing what approaches they and their teams have taken to overcome the challenge of scaling Drupal.
Welcome to Portland! I recently ordered a copy of your book and am looking forward to delving in. I also enjoyed your presentation at the CMS Summit / Drupalcon in Sunnyvale earlier this year.
Here's a suggestion: How about discussing "Intro to Drupal for Geeks" in the August meeting and "Drupal Performance and Scalability" in the September meeting? That would seem to be a logical order for the topics.
I agree. I would love to have a presentation on theming, since I am very lacking in that area (among others). Something cool would be to have one of our local theming ninjas walk through creating a theme either from scratch, or starting with an existing one like Zen.
I think something is up with the date for this event. It read January 8th, although I assume we're planning for August 8th, next week. Looking forward to seeing y'all there.
So I'm total Portland newbie and couldn't find the place. I mean I found 333 SE 2nd Ave, but didn't see any signs for Bus Project. Sorry peeps, I'll try again next time! Meanwhile any clues would be helpful. I did find the Produce Row Bar.
we figured it was something like that. had a pretty mellow meeting. greg talked about some of the issues d.o was going through and what was being done to address them. then we did a little q&a. i got to bitch about files and the image*.modules. good times.
Groups.drupal.org is a part of the drupal.org group of sites. Logging in on this site requires an account on the main drupal.org site. If you do not have an account on drupal.org, you will need to create one, log in over there, and then come back here where you should automatically be logged in.
Meeting next week
Does anybody have any sites/concepts/plugins they would like to present??
New To Portland
I just moved to Portland can give a presentation. How about an Intro to Drupal for Geeks OR Drupal Performance and Scalability?
sweet!
how about doing a book signing ;)
Intro to Drupal for Geeks
Welcome to Portland Matt,
I'll vote for "Intro to Drupal for Geeks" (actually I'd love to see both but probably only time for one this meeting)
cheers,
sam

Two-Part Series... August (Intro) and September (Scalability)
Matt,
Welcome to Portland! I recently ordered a copy of your book and am looking forward to delving in. I also enjoyed your presentation at the CMS Summit / Drupalcon in Sunnyvale earlier this year.

And what about "Theming" for November?
Cheers,
Ben
Definitely Theming
I agree. I would love to have a presentation on theming, since I am very lacking in that area (among others). Something cool would be to have one of our local theming ninjas walk through creating a theme either from scratch, or starting with an existing one like Zen.
Hey Ben, looking forward to
Hey Ben, looking forward to meeting you and the fellow Portland Drupal geeks!
That sounds like a plan to me. Sign me up for all three presentations. What's the time limit for presenting?
Time Limit
Overall - We meet every 2nd Wednesday
We meet at 6 and go to 8ish, followed by a post meeting at Produce Row Cafe/Pub across the street.
Bus project provides projector and screen
is the date wrong?
Hey -
I think something is up with the date for this event. It read January 8th, although I assume we're planning for August 8th, next week. Looking forward to seeing y'all there.
Lev Tsypin

Finding the bar is half the battle
I actually thought the meeting was next Wednesday.
Oy.
Did the meeting day shift from the 2nd Wednesday of the month to the 1st Wednesday of the month?

Uh, last Wednesday was August 1st, last night was August 8th, which was the second Wednesday of the month.
