What is the status of couchdb?

From what I read about it I love the concept. Unfortunately though I cannot find any groups oriented around couchdb and wonder if it is still evolving. How are users liking it.

I want to create a series of books and other related products and love the potential non linear flexibility of couchdb which I read about. I am not a programmer though and would love to learn more about how this db is actually being used and what it will take to start using it.

In the short term I would love to build a database with all my notes and start assigning them to a potential book or other connection in the system I want to build. I want this to evolve into an on line cloud like journey which guides users into deeper levels of themselves based on choices they make or some other feedback method. I want to be able to organize my notes into indesign so that I can focus on presentation as well as content and organization simultaneously since I have some particulars of what I want it to look like and have size constraints.

Edit: moved from groups.drupal.org group to the Database group where it is more relevant.

Not relational

I don't know of any CouchDB support in Drupal currently. There are working development modules for MongoDB, which is a similar document-oriented DB.

However, all of those are non-relational databases and therefore not supported by Drupal's DB layer, which is designed for SQL databases. If you want to use MongoDB, it would tie in at the field storage engine level, for instance.
