Examples of community mediated curriculum in open source software

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Have an example of a community mediated open curriculum?

In the most recent #drupal-dojo chat we had last night (or yesterday afternoon) we laid out some plans to start stirring a discussion around a community-mediated curriculum. We're first talking about developing a common language and working on our goals for the group.

To this end, it's good to look at how other open source communities have traversed the same ground.

The WaSP Interact project is a great example. http://interact.webstandards.org/

OK, the content is different and the community is both more diverse/spread and also more mature. However, it is amazing as an example of what we've been talking about.

Their curriculum is open and community mediated.

There are community-shared learning resources (kinda like what the Dojo is trying to do). And plenty of opportunities for educators to build on; for example in the form of books, training, and university or college education.

See more at http://interact.webstandards.org/
"The WaSP InterACT curriculum project seeks to ease the challenges schools around the world face as they prepare their students for careers on the Web. WaSP InterACT is a living curriculum designed to change and keep pace with the fast moving industry. "

Time to dig in and see how they've developed their process. Here's just a hint. Their timeline has been very efficient.

"The WaSP InterACT curriculum project began in early 2008 as a major initiative of The Web Standards Project's Education Task Force. The initial curriculum was released in March of 2009 with 11 courses divided into six learning tracks, though many new courses are on the roadmap for future release."

They are focused on developing "courses" now whereas we're just trying to lay the ground for a common language. But it's an interesting model. And inspiring.

P2P University: Open Web

P2P University: Open Web Developer Degree, Another example of an open community mediated curriculum

The ultimate curriculum for open web developers, and a community endorsed certificate to show off your skills.

"Work with P2P University and Mozilla to design a curriculum for web developers that covers not only the latest open web technologies, but helps participants develop a hacker's attitude and succeed in open source projects. Review draft courses and help us run at P2PU. Build community support for an open web developer certificate so that graduates can get jobs and this becomes a real alternative to expensive (and often proprietary) alternatives. "

Another great example!
