@robbie01: This post holds an example of how to use Rules and Rules scheduler to send two e-mails to new users -- one two days after regestering and one ten days after regestering.
(The post is a reply to a previous discussion, but needed a new since I couldn't attach files to comments.)
To try the rules, you'll need Rules, Token and Features installed on your site. Download and install the attached file as a regular module, and then go to admin > build > features to activate it. (You'll have to remove the txt extension to unpack it -- tgz files couldn't be uploaded.)
Good luck!

yes!
I have been trying to use the 'user stats' module which has a token [user:reg-days] to send off emails, private msgs etc, but it has not worked and this is a great alternative! Definitely more complicated, but easy to figure out with an example like this! I really appreciate your work for this community my man!
Many thanks for the download.
Many thanks for the download. It has solved my dilemma of how to send autoresponders to updated users at set periods. However, if i could ask for one more tiny piece of advice. Instead of 2 emails i want a set of 12. I have tried cloning the existing rulesets and also copying and creating rulesets to match yours but for the life of me cannot get the new rulesets to appear for scheduling in the triggered rules.
What am i missing in the rules setup or is it easier to modify the module somehow?
Thanks in advance.

Rules not sending any email
Your solution is very clean but the problem that I have is this.
I was trying everything but I couldn't get any email whit rules. I tried all the options available in rules just to test it but didn't receive any email. I looked in every post and nothing.
This is the situation:
Module used to register with the email LoginToboggan.
My problem is that I want to send a simple welcome email after they register so I thought that rules it would be a good solution for that but i couldn't find the way to do it.
Other system emails such the contact form or password request are working fine.
Any help will be great.
Thanks.

Debug
You could try turning on Rules debug.
