Two Proposals

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Here are some proposals, for comment and discussion. I've also added them to the agenda, and will open polls for voting.

  • Drupal Newsletter Team
The Drupal Newsletter Team shall be resposible for publishing the periodic Drupal Newsletter at http://drupal.org/newsletter. They shall meet using this group, at http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-newsletter. Its members shall be all volunteers who subscribe to this group. Whenever the team calls for a vote, any subscribed member may vote, although each individual may only have one vote, regardless of the number of accounts they possess. Unless otherwise stated, any vote shall be conducted with a poll linked to a motion in the current agenda wiki, with a duration of a week. The results of a vote shall be recorded in the agenda, and the Team shall ensure that it abides by these results.
  • Newsletter Meeting
The Drupal Newsletter Team shall hold periodic Newsletter Meetings, where all decisions concerning the Drupal Newsletter are made. As needed, a new wiki page will be created to contain the official agenda of this meeting. Any team member may add to this agenda by editing the wiki page. If at least a week has passed since the previous agenda was written, any team member may create a new agenda, if they believe this is warranted. The newest agenda should be made sticky for easy access by members.

Stand alone site?

Has there been any discussion/proposals regarding presenting the newsletter in sort of a stand alone newspaper/zine format? Seems like that would be a great excuse to build a newspaper/zine style install profile in collaboration with some other groups?

I think that's a great idea. Allows us to put some multimedia, perhaps 3 minute tutorial videos for this purpose. I'll set up http://drupal-newsletter.org for this purpose.

Some thoughts

Hm, actually I'd prefer to not splinter out things like videos any further. Wouldn't it make more sense to have videos either in the d.o handbook video section (http://drupal.org/handbook/customization/videocasts) or on Dojo and simply link to them from a newsletter?

I'm also thinking it may be a good idea to raise the idea of a new domain/standalone site in the larger Drupal community (in the Webmaster's issue queue, say) since we seem to generally like keeping things tied in to drupal.org.

Best of all worlds

When I unsuccessfully proposed a newsletter/zine element to be part of the new Drupal Dojo site, I was thinking more of providing an outlet for content written by the newsletter folks (not by Dojos). Agree with Add1sun that the vids can be pulled from the centralized Drupal repository for learning materials (aka Drupal Dojo).

In terms of the overall fear of fragmentation, I'd assume the newsletter material could be presented in multiple formats (rss on drupal planet, email subscription, etc.). Possibly a similar thing for the videos (handbook could provide links to the centralized repository).

The project of building such a site might be a good one for collaboration/project oriented learning between multiple groups and provide the framework for a newsletter/zine Drupal product/profile.

As long as we don't take away from the 'mother ship', interesting/engaging ways to present/showcase the materials seems like it would open up Drupal to a wider audience.

I don't want to splinter things either

My thought is not for splintering. A new sub-site would be to create a new repository for the newsletter folks to try out their wings, where we can install some cool modules like 5 star, use views/panels to create a professional presentation, and have some volunteers create a snazzy theme.

It would be great if the DA would donate newsletter.drupal.org for this purpose; otherwise, I am glad to donate server space for drupal-newsletter.org. In any case, once we work out logistics, it doesn't really matter too much where this lives, as it can be pointed seamlessly from drupal.org and the newsletter itself, as it becomes active. The various existing sub-sites of d.o don't share a user base anyway, and we can always use OpenID to make things easier for people.

As far as videos, again, it doesn't really matter where they live. They can be embedded into the newsletter in any case. This might only be as links in emails and on d.o's official newsletter page, but on drupal-newsletter.org, it could be embedded directly into a story, with autoplay, ratings, and whatever else we decide.

In any case, I'm setting up a start, so we can flesh out some ideas. It can always be moved to another server and/or domain in the future, if people want to go that direction.
