Reuters has opened up a web application to streamline the process of generating metadata around content. From their web site at http://opencalais.mashery.com/Overview
The Calais Web Service
The Calais web service automatically attaches rich semantic metadata to the content you submit – in well under a second. Using natural language processing, machine learning and other methods, Calais categorizes and links your document with entities (people, places, organizations, etc.), facts (person ‘x’ works for company ‘y’), and events (person ‘z’ was appointed chairman of company ‘y’ on date ‘x’). The metadata results are stored centrally and returned to you as industry-standard RDF constructs accompanied by a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID). Using the Calais GUID, any downstream consumer is able to retrieve this metadata via a simple call to Calais.
This metadata gives you the ability to build maps (or graphs or networks) linking documents to people to companies to places to products to events to geographies to … whatever. You can use those maps to improve site navigation, provide contextual syndication, tag and organize your content, create structured folksonomies, filter and de-duplicate news feeds or analyze content to see if it contains what you care about. And, you can share those maps with anyone else in the content ecosystem.
They are also offering bounties for applications to integrate with Calais -- there is currently only one, for Wordpress. See http://opencalais.mashery.com/page/bountyprogram

Yahoo term extraction provides the auto tagging ability for drupal through this module..
The semantic cloud and GUID features are pretty nice though.
You could always build your own using Freeling. I did.
Calais is mentioned here also:

Not to be confused with the sexual dysfunction medication.
Looks like this is already in development

I'm looking forward to seeing this in action.

Maybe he could use some help?
Hello from the Calais Team
(My apologies - this is a duplicate post I put into http://groups.drupal.org/node/8800 - but I wanted to make sure I caught all interested parties)
Hi all, this is Tom Tague. I'm the leader for the Calais initiative at Reuters.
Well, it's been a long day. We got Slashdotted (careful what you wish for) and signed up about 400 new developers for the Calais service today alone. I've spent the day fighting fires and decided to take a moment and catch up on Calais related blog posts.
What a pleasure to see that Drupal has picked up on the idea. Building partnerships with the larger CMS platforms is an absolute top priority on our list. We just hadn't had time to get to it yet.
So, I'd like to ask all of you - how can the Calais team help make this a reality? We're not Drupal-savvy so we don't know yet how the Drupal community works - but we're ready to learn.
We'd like to see one or more extremely high quality modules developed that leverage Calais' capabilities in Drupal. Maybe that's semantic tagging, maybe faceted news navigation, maybe something else. Frankly - you'll have better ideas than we will.
We can offer expedited technical support, an open ear for suggestions on how to improve Calais and perhaps even financial support if there is an established mechanism for that.
Would love to hear your ideas and feedback.
Regards,
Tom Tague
