Session transcript

gusaus's picture

dougvann, eric_sea, and myself had a roundabout discussion about the ongoing Dojo website development and the Dojo in general. We were quite surprised (and exited) that some relative newcomers to Drupal jumped into the conversation and into the Dojo.

We forgot to push the record button (might be a good thing), but the ongoing conversation can be found here in #drupal-dojo.

Thanks to all who participated!

Ongoing dojo website development

I'm in Woodland Hils (Los Angeles) and always interested in local gatherings to performing dev setup, workshops, etc. I can accomodate up to four here at my residence -- more if I can get a picnic table for outside (may be problematic because of that darn glaring sunshine). In any event, thanks for today's discussion!

Don

Me too!

Hi. I'm interested in small group, local workgroups/workshops too. I used to live off of Topanga, but have moved 'next door' to Ventura. I've been meeting up with another Drupaler at the Woodland Hills Jerry's Deli from time-to-time. Let's all get together! I'll bring an umbrella and extra wi-fi :)

Hi Markus, I'm just up the street from Jerry's. I would love to meet you and others too. Do you have a project or focus for a meetup? I have a small table with an umbrella and wi-fi. Can try to establish a good shady area in the yard, unless you want to meet at Jerry's. I appreciate you respond about this. I'm going to Santa Monica Public Library tonight for drual-la meetup.

Hi Mark,

How about we meet up at your place and then go get a sandwich at Jerry's afterwards :)

I'm open to all kinds of project ideas, but here's a few to toss around and see if any fit for you:

1) I'm interested in creating and using a (Drupal 7?) theme based on http://lessframework.com/

2) I have some ideas for some Drupal cheat sheets ideas that might be fun to talk about and see where that leads. Might require some fun research and learning to prepare.

3) I've been working with Nginx and Drupal lately. I'd love to push this further and investigate using Aegir project in that environment.

Any of those sound good? What are you interested in?

Good to hear you're off to LA meetup; I'm going the other way to the SB meetup. Maybe we can meet in WH sometime in the next week or two and compare notes. :)

I am learning theming now, so Drupal 7 themes would be super great, and Lessfamework appears to be some fun ideas.

Nginx -- absolutely! I've been looking at that. MariaDB. Drush3, Aegir, and now lessframework. Many things.

Here's some config issues that may be interesting (or maybe not) ...

I have a machine running Centos 5. I've been putting sites online as shared hosting. I put D7 on here but there's a problem. Go to http://d7.markcox.net and click go a few times. There's the problem! A Php issue.

I've tried some pre-baked repo's but have made no other attempt to fix this. The goal is simple -- D7 on Linux. It's not a show stopper because it will work using WAMP but I'd like to use linux.

Rather than upsetting a good performing Centos, I put Ubuntu onto a different server, then I unplugged it because it's noisy and I'm busy with other things anyway.

Some thoughts:

Shared hosting, Virtual Box, Cloud Install -- first instinct I went for the Cloud but then I un-did it because a big bill would not be pleasant, need to understand that better (at least somewhat). So the server has just a standard ubuntu server installation now. It could have a different Os. Debian has been mentioned.

Maybe posting it for sale on Craigs list is the best decision. My thinking is if it allows a quick environment for D7 and more without disturbing anything else then that's a good result.

Some components:
Git
D7
Nginx
MariaDb
Drush3
Aegir

Yes, let's get together. It is my pleasure to host a meetup. You can schedule it at a time that is convenient for you. Email me at markcox@bayarea.net. Thanks very much for sharing your ideas!

shared host php.ini

fending's picture

Hi, Mark - Regarding your shared host issue, see if you can get them to modify the php.ini to add the following:

extension = dom.so
extension = mbstring.so
magic_quotes_gpc = no

If they "can't", try adding a file named php.ini to your root containing the above lines. I had to do similar stuff before giving up on shared hosts.

extension = dom.so and mbstring

Hi Fending, Thank you for this advice. I have the server here, and I added the lines you suggest, but the modules do not exist on the filesystem. No error but no dice. My understanding is this involves a build. I'm brave enough to try repo's -- but not building vital components. That's why I brought up my other big noisy server. To avoid not having a LAMP environment (because I broke it).

Drupal is great. Open Source is great, just requires more skills, and greater flexibility.

Best Wishes!

Don

How about Sunday, Oct 3 at 2pm?

apperceptions's picture

Hi Mark

Thanks for the invite and call.

How about getting together tomorrow and look into your LAMP / Drupal 7 issue. Maybe two heads would be as they say. :)

MarioDB looks interesting. Claims to be a drop in replacement for MySQL - I'd love to check that bold-ass statement out :)

If not tomorrow, how about sometime next week?

Best,
Markus

Sunday, Oct 3 at 2pm. Yes that's fine!

I'm at 4811 Regalo Road. It's off San Luis -- to Macfarland, then up the hill and bear right around the bend, then very first left and down the hill and through the stop sign. Looks like a short street but you can turn left. Street name is Excellente -- quickly first right, then quicly first left onto Regalo. It's a short street, just starts there and ends here (at my house), a tan stuco. Sounds easy but if you know this area, it's like the maze on the Shining but no snow, or axe. Call me if you feel you're missing it, or call from Topanga if you just want I come lead you. No problem.

Feel free to bring a friend or two if you like is fine. Thank you for your interest!

Don't lose home phone 818-591-5884. Your cell may not work well up here. I look forward to meeting you!

Don

Looking forward to it

I grew up in Woodland Hills and remember those streets :)

My partner intends to relax, so I'll come alone. Maybe there's another local or two reading this and who'd like to join in. Post a note in the LA Group if you want to find a few more.

Main goal will be trying to get that Drupal 7 running on your system. I think you're right. You need to rebuild php to add those libs I think. I've run into that before and always punted. High time I learned how to recompile that beast. Anyone out there who can help us?

See you at 2pm.
