I'm putting the finishing touches on a website (ttnorthbay.org) for our local initiative in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. If I had known this project was under way I would have done it in Drupal instead of Joomla but there is always version 2.
I think it's pretty much a standard site with discussion forums, a newsletter, newsfeeds, etc. About the only thing unique is that we've set up an amazon.ca affiliate bookstore to help fund webhosting, etc.
The primary opportunity I see is for all the various initiatives around the world to share content with each other, like a primer on peak oil can be developed as a group and included in multiple sites. It would also be neat to have some sort of shared discussion forum and online chat.
The problem in our area is it's hard to keep people actively involved in Transition because everyone is so busy and we are still so few in numbers that it can be a bit discouraging at times. It would be nice to have the appearance of a larger community so people feel there is some momentum behind this thing.
But I'll make a point of getting caught up on the posts and hopefully find a roll for myself in this thing. Give me a couple of days.

Welcome! There are a couple
Welcome! There are a couple of aspects to sharing, for the general forums the Network site might be the best global option (http://www.transitionnetwork.org/forum). Also for primer and other content one option is the wiki (http://wiki.transitionnetwork.org/Main_Page).
Sharing information between initiatives locally might best be done with the sharing engine (see last couple of comments on this thread http://groups.drupal.org/node/95594), something that needs more dev work to realise.
Modules List & Developers tools
I've got drupal set up on a development server so I can learn how to do administration of it when this project gets released. Nice system...like it much better than Joomla. I'm looking for a list of modules that are expected to be in the transition drupal installation profile. I thought I saw one before in the online book but now I can't find the book. Can anyone help me find this list or provide a new one?
Also, what developer tools are people using?

Hi, bkeevil. Welcome aboard! I haven't used Joomla so I can't comment on it other than to say that many people do like it so it appears to get the job done. In any case, I will definitely point out that Drupal has a top-notch development team behind it.
The answers to what you are looking for can be found at the transitiondrupal.org site:

I use Aptana Studio and MAMP for local development.
