Dallas Texas

Welcome, Dallas Drupalers! The Lone Star State has a lot of area to cover, so this group, the Dallas Texas Drupal Community, is for those in North Texas. This includes the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area and surroundings. We need to meet each other and find out who, where, and how Drupal is being used in the area.

Visit our website (a work in progress) at www.DrupalJedi.com to connect with others in the group, post info and comments, and find out about upcoming events.

June Refresh Dallas - Blending Performance with Front-End Architecture

Start:
2008-06-05 19:00 America/Chicago - 2008-06-05 21:00 America/Chicago

Think web performance is all about load balancing, database indexes, and memory management? Think again. Recent research shows that 80-90% of the end-user response time is spent on the front-end.

The way you develop your site's HTML, CSS, and JavaScript makes a big impact on how long it takes your site to load. But, speeding up your site doesn't have to mean throwing out best practices. Chris Griego ( http://www.boldpx.com/ ) will show you the guidelines and techniques to combine performance with a solid front-end architecture.

Early Adopters of Drupal 6?

jnunn - Sat, 2008-02-23 17:22

With the recent launch of Drupal 6, I wanted to start some dialog about transitioning to the new core. Has anyone moved their sites, or created any new sites in Drupal 6? If so, what were the snags (if any) for upgrading? I have most of my Drupal installs at 5.5+, so just curious to see if there are any early adopters out there.

Hi,
I posted this on the drupal.org paid drupallers forum and also the group's site at www.drupaljedi.com. Sorry for the multiple posts. I would really love it if someone local to Dallas area could respond who is looking for paid work on a drupal based site. Needs to be senior drupaller!

How do you do mail?

jjesus - Sun, 2007-12-02 12:31

Hi,

On my Drupal host served from http://www.linode.com, I also run a mail server. I receive email for the domain, example: headcoach AT planowestlacrosse DOT org, and, I also use the SimpleNews module to send out a weekly email newsletter.

I created a pretty robust system following the instructions here:

http://flurdy.com/docs/postfix/

It was pretty intense work to get that all to work. How do other website admins do mail? Is there an easier way?

Cheers.

Meetup is tonight at 7:30 at Mug & Mouse in Frisco.

Dustin is going to demo integrating between drupal and flash (or other component... javascript, java applet, or even a standalone desktop app) that can accept XML input over HTTP and it does whatever it needs to do. First example will be a custom portfolio module. The second, more complex, example will be a Drupal menu.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

April 14-15 and 21-22, two non-profits, The League of Technical Voters and Knowbility.org, will host Designathon/Codeathon 2.0 in Austin. We want to make this a big event and are hoping for some representation from the North Texas crew as well!

This is the second in a series of volunteer events based to help build usable, accessible open source web tools for non-profits. Development will not be restricted to any particular platform or language, but the previous codeathon was based entirely on Drupal and we are hoping to have a strong Drupal contingent at this one as well.

Demo Camp Dallas 1

cks@drupal.org - Sun, 2007-02-11 22:27
Start:
2007-01-15 18:30 US/Central - 2007-01-15 20:30 US/Central

The first Dallas Demo Camp is this Thursday, Feb 15th at Sabre Labs in Southlake, TX. All are welcome.

A DemoCamp lasts only a few hours on a weekday evening. Unlike a BarCamp, you don't have to present. You are welcome to come along and give feedback to the people who do (or just watch and absorb if you don't feel like talking). Demos should have roughly a 2 minute introduction, 8 minute demonstration, and 5 minutes for questions. 15 minutes total. You don't strictly have to sign up on the Wiki page in order to attend, but it helps with getting an accurate count. A Demo Camp is a great place to meet fellow Drupalists!

Bar Camp Dallas III

Start:
2007-01-20 08:00 US/Central - 2007-01-21 17:00 US/Central

Bar Camp Dallas III is happening in just a few short weeks. Bar Camps are notorious for the high percentage of attendees who use Drupal, so everybody on the list should plan to be there.

What's a Bar Camp? It's an "unconference" where the organizers provide a venue with meeting rooms, whiteboards, overhead projectors and a big, blank schedule wall. Attendees show up in the morning and work out a schedule. The topics tend to center around Web 2.0, but the exact agenda depends on who shows up that morning. You can find out more at:

Well, I go away for a few days, and when I check back in, we are up to 15 subscribers/members in the North Texas group! I greeted many of you individually, but if I have not yet had a chance, welcome to all of you! I knew there had to be more than just myself and a couple of friends that I introduced to Drupal around the North Texas area. ;-)

Now that we have a bigger group, we should think about getting together sometime just to meet each other. We won't have any big agendas; we'll just get together for dinner, happy hour, or something to meet, get to know everyone, and chat about how each of us is using (or considering using) Drupal. If you have thoughts or suggestions for a time/place, post them as comments on this story. Be sure to let everyone know where you are located so that we can try to find someplace central although that's tough in the sprawling metroplex. I am in Carrollton but work @ D/FW.
