Organization Profile

The BRussells Tribunal was launched as a citizens' initiative in 2003 to interrogate and oppose the illegal war of aggression waged by the United States on Iraq. It was the opening session of what would become the World Tribunal on Iraq, which culminated in Istanbul in 2005. From 2005 until now the BRussells Tribunal continued the intellectual and political work begun in 2003, monitoring the occupation and responding intellectually to its devastating intent and impact.

The BRussells Tribunal is founded on defending and respecting Iraqi sovereignty in all of its complex meanings, and thus is composed of currents from across the patriotic political spectrum in Iraq — those that oppose the occupation and refuse to work with it — as well as prominent international lawyers, activists, intellectuals and scholars. The BRussells Tribunal works on a zero budget and represents no political party.
