Prior to joining iSec Partners Andrew Becherer was a Senior Consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton. While at Booz Allen Hamilton Mr. Becherer created a prototype system for document management, collaboration and lightweight geographic information systems using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server integrating Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) and Microsoft VirtualEarth mapping service with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
While working in the fincancial sector Mr. Becherer assited in the creation and implementation of policy bringing a large Visa/MasterCard merchant portfolio into compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. He assisted merchants, with a wide range of IT deployments, in documenting compliance with the new security standard. During this period he identified business process inefficiencies and automated those processes through the use of various technologies.
During his studies at the University of Washington, Tacoma, Mr. Becherer served as a liaison between the Institute of Technology and Pacific Northwest regional open source technology groups. He demonstrated the use of open source network security and penetration testing tools for network security students. He developed several behavior based mobile robots, which we able to emulate animal foraging behavior, avoid obstacles, sense environmental variables such as light. Robots of this design would be useful in a number of industrial applications such as abandoned ordinance detection, litter abatement or environmental surveys. One of his robots was later selected by the Institute of Technology for use during a recruiting event.
Mr. Becherer recently left his post as the President of the student Association of Computing Machinery at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Formerly he was on the board of the Tacoma Linux Users Group (Taclug) and continues to be an organizing member. Mr. Becherer lectures for a number regional technology groups on topics including open source network security tools, embedded Linux applications and mobile robotics. He will be presenting at the 2008 Linuxfest Northwest conference on how organizations can utilize commercial cloud computing resources to operate their IT infrastructures more efficiently.
Security is a subject of great interest to Mr. Becherer. In addition to his educational outreach work with regional open source groups he is a member of several nationally recognized security organizations. These organizations include the FBI InfraGard and the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP). Through events sponsored by these organizations Mr. Becherer stays current with emerging information security threats.
