User group meeting

The third Tampa Bay Drupal meetup is coming up on November 4th. We seem to have a cast of regulars developing, and we've now established a standard meeting place for the foreseeable future.

Last meetup, we went over getting a bare-bones Drupal site running using an Acquia stack (notes here). This month Joe will be touching on a number of modules you'll likely want to use on almost any site you develop with Drupal, a starter-kit of modules if you will.

Following this, we'll have a general discussion and attempt to answer any questions people may have in general, or specific to something they're working on.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM, and the location is at the Panera on Ulmerton Road:
2285 Ulmerton Rd.
Clearwater, FL 3376

There is a $50 charge to use their meeting room, but any food purchases are deducted from this cost, so come hungry (for food as well as Drupal knowledge)!

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

If you have any requests or comments for the meetup, please feel free to mention below in the comments.

Hi All-

Just wanted to give a heads up I won't be able to make it the meeting tonight, caught a cold this week and it's not quite done with me yet.

Hope you all have a good meeting though, and I certainly look forward to the next meeting. If someone wouldn't mind jotting down a few notes (I usually do) that we can use as a re-cap for the meeting I'd certainly appreciate it! (here's an example of my last re-cap: http://groups.drupal.org/node/91864#comment-322624)

Was there a signup list for this meetup? I just found out about this over the weekend and planned on attending but didn't read that there was a signup list.

I can be reached at 784-5140!

Meeting Recap

hot_sauce's picture

Wow, the Tampa group just keeps getting better and better - 4 new attendees!

Welcome to the new Tampa Drupalistas - Travis, Trudy, DeVaunte and Robert!

In attendance - Joe, Travis, Trudy, Cynde, Shawn, Adam, Danielle, Willow, DeVaunte, Michael, Harry, Pamela and Robert

This month's meeting was led by Joe Moraca, who discussed the "starter kit" of modules that most Drupal sites will need. Joe built off of the Acquia stack install covered by Mike in the October meeting, as it has many great modules already included, and a general discussion and explanation of each of the following modules was touched upon:

  • Admin Menu
  • CCK (and its related components)
  • Feeds/Feeds API
  • Core optional modules: blog, book, color, contact, forum, menu, path, poll, profile, search, taxonomy, tracker, trigger
  • Poormanscron and the general setup of cron for a Drupal site
  • Date and Calendar
  • A wide discussion of different image modules (Image, Imagefield, ImageCache) and WYSIWYG tools available in Drupal
  • Advanced Help
  • Lightbox2
  • Mollom
  • pathauto
  • token
  • webform
  • print email pdf
  • google analytics
  • tagadelic
  • jquery ui
  • views (and the many, many, many wide extensions and power of Views
  • imagefield_crop
  • backup & migrate
  • devel

Shawn also wanted to spotlight the Submit Again module, which allows users adding multiple pieces of the same type of content to save time by submitting their content, hitting the Submit Again button and then being taken back to that same Create Content page for that content type. A real time saver!

Joe and Mike also led a discussion about the powers of the Features module, its extendability in moving installed modules from one site to the other and the general power of the module itself.

Also discussed was the integration of imagecache presets into a views display, how to configure correctly your sites Performance page for both production and testing sites and finally how to use a modules Issue Queue page to determine how often a module committer updates their bugs and also how patches can be found that may fix an issue if the author hasn't gotten to it yet.

Our next meeting will be at the same location (Mike found a sheet for the screen this time, thanks Mike!) on Thursday, December 2nd where I will be doing a presentation on Drupal's theming system.

Once again, a great turn out and the group keeps getting bigger! It was great seeing everyone and I look forward to seeing even more people next month!

Thanks Adam

Awesome recap Adam. Thanks so much for taking notes and sharing them. Sounds like I picked a poor time to get sick.

Very much look forward to the next meeting, and meeting all the new folks.
