Sharing from experience.

First you will need to make a list and define the functionality you want for your site. Then look at the modules available and determine what will suit your need. Not all modules will have all the features you are looking for(hence, tweaking, hacking(not really suggested), etc.) Remember not all module 5.7 modules have been ported to 6, (for example, Panels module). Suggestion lang noh, for modules not yet available for Drupal 6, you can have a 5.7 test environment, just to get to know the modules.

I would suggest looking at the support request page to see what you are up against. There might be some outstanding bugs that have not been fixed yet, etc.

Running on a local host might give you some problems with some of the modules (imagecache needs clean URL to run). From what I remember you have a MAC environment right, I hope you have it configure properly.

You are looking for:

* calendar - for event, for archiving, ?
* audio - for podcasting? Live Streaming?
* video - what type of video? FLVs? 
* magazine - to do what?
* good photo gallery (drag and drop... meron ba nito?) -

Calendar - I use Archive module (simple lang I just need a visual calendar to link to old post)- http://drupal.org/project/archive
Audio - I don't use
Video - I use Flashvideo (version 6 supported) - http://drupal.org/project/flashvideo
Magazine - nope don't use
Photo Gallery (sorry no drag and drop) - http://drupal.org/project/imagefield_gallery
