Let's Be Bold- I Need A Local Programmer

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Folks, I'm looking for a programmer, local to the Eugene/Springfield area, who knows Drupal.

This is an immediate need. I am trying to build a site that is sponsored by a company I am building. I have built the base and would like to find someone who has a few hours a week to help me with it- The idea is to build it past the basics, and use it's building membership to help me build another business. (actually two of them)

Needless to say, this is an opportunity for someone to come in on the ground floor of this, and to build a very nice curriculum-vitae, or a very comfortable life-style.

I didn't post this as a job, simply because it isn't a position that is based on wages or a salary (as of yet). However, it will turn into that. In fact, it will turn into a very lucrative system that involves a series of studios and other interests.

I know that this sounds a bit vague, but the Drupal site I am building is of a controversial nature, and requires a bit of delicacy. The other e-commerce site that supports it is live, and I am trying to manipulate a list of things with this plan. Everything from page ranks, registered account holders, to SEO. The point is, I have reached the limit of my own abilities, and we all know that success comes from admitting when you can't do it all- That's when you surround yourself with those who can do the things you can't.

Simply put, I'm looking for a person who wants to build more than a website. I am a video game artist, and have a very extensive network of industry professionals to lean on, but this isn't a video game, and I am an artist. While Our graphic content can amaze the public, the mechanics of the system is suffering, and we both know it takes both to bring in and keep membership roles on the internet.

My email is walt@waltmoser.com, and I would like to discuss possibilities with anyone from around the Eugene area who can take up the slack and help me build these companies- partial ownership is involved, and I don't mind helping them out from the petty cash account while we are making this work.

Send me an email to tell me how you can help; give me something to reference: IE. a link to work you've done, tell me about your interests and hobbies, where you work now, and the estimated time you can commit each week to this little project. You might also give me a way to contact you other than email, and we can see where this leads from there.

Just a point of interest: This isn't my first merri-go-round, I have built major corporations in the past, from the ground up, and sold them for very, very large amounts. This is just another idea I want to make happen.

Nobody, no matter how

jjustman's picture

Nobody, no matter how desperate or up-and-coming, should do freelance work without a proper contract and a proper agreed-upon payment arrangement. Walt, you seem to be offering a promise you are not in a position to fill: the success of your venture, which statistically is very unlikely.

I'm only saying this because I've been bitten in the behind too many times by big promises and small results. If this were a post asking for help building a house, for example, how would it sound? It would sound like you were trying to get a house built without spending the money or possessing the knowledge that everyone knows you need to have to build a house.

Respectfully,

Thanks for the reply, and were I sitting on the other side of this post, my thoughts would be the same. That's why I titled the post, "Let's Be Bold."

Simply stated, this is an idea I have to build the income of an already existing site, and to start a viable company. It's not that I can't do the job- it would be much faster by surrounding myself with people who have experience beyond me, and everything would definitely be put in writing.

Let's face it; I am not a programmer, and I am limited (I am intelligent though, and capable of learning, quickly)- I was trying to be humble in that regard. I'm asking for help in achieving this small goal.

The intention here is to associate myself with a few people who have the skills I'm looking for, and allow them to get to know me, the project, and to involve them in the setup and execution of the idea.

Like you, I've been stung before as well, and the hope for posting this little idea was to find those, like yourself, who are interested enough to respond.

In your post, you have already explained to me that you know Drupal, you communicate very well with others, both in the written form, and verbally, (you used a very simple analogy). You also told me that you understand this business, and the contractual side of client relationships. Additionally, you have made it very clear, that you don't work for free, and that tells me you are more in tune with the concept of building a studio than those who remain silent when they read my post above. The questions left unknown here is:

  • What is your personal commitment level
  • How good are you with Drupal
  • What experience do you have with success in this field, and business
  • And, to what extent are you prepared to go to build an idea

See, I already have the other site running, and it was paid for. This idea is simply something that will help to build the interests of the other site, and in the process, build a studio, and other potential areas to work with.

The person I built the site for, has made me an offer that is rather nice. But before I run down that path, I want a good team behind me, and to help formulate the plan of execution. Thus, limiting the issues that lead to failure.

No, I'm not asking for someone to build me a house that I don't have to pay for; I'm asking for someone to take the floor plans I've drawn up, and go through them as an architect would. My idea looks pretty (I'm an artist), but a programmer would keep me from stressing the initial structure of the plan. Right now, there is no plan, just an idea. I consider the plan to be compared to the blueprints of a large building- without the input of a good programmer, the plans will never be started.

I want a real partner. Someone who is as guarded in their interests, as they are for the endurance of the company, and who is capable of identifying the special needs of a new start-up. This, and my own experience and skills, will keep the team in check and help the venture to grow.

And in completion of my reply, I have one question left: Are you interested enough to meet and help me understand how you could help this work?

Shadow-Hawk

Your tone intrigues and

Your tone intrigues and actually sort of frightens me. This sort of thing is exactly why I don't freelance any more. Your forward-looking statements reek of a desire for deeply discounted work. I could be completely wrong. You could really be well-funded, with a groundbreaking product of some sort. I could be shunning the next Bill Gates or Sergey Brin.

Actually, my last free-lance gig was great. The fellow sounded a lot like you. He even asked me to sign a confidentiality agreement before I did any work. However, he also asked right away what my hourly rate was, and always paid in advance. The result was a brilliant web application I'm extremely proud of, but which hasn't made a dime.

Back to the analogy: architects charge quite a bit of money for the kind of service you're asking for. Too many people seem to apply completely different standards to web ventures than from other types of ventures. It's actually a cliche within the web programming community. But too many young coders learn the hard way what is the usual ultimate purpose of good intentions.

Best of luck,

JT

LOL;

Your tone intrigues and frightens me

As it should! You don't know me from Adam.

Uniquely enough, I will be the first to tell you, no, this isn't a ground-breaking product, just a needed application for some 28,000+ Oregonians. The project is simple and will provide income through the offer made to me by the owner of this site- http://www.greenlightsupplies.com

The offer made is one I would discuss in private, with the right people, as well as the project.

As for the deeply discounted rates. Make no mistake, I don't intend to work for nothing, my skills are valuable, and I don't believe in the idea of income-depletion because someone else says there is a depression. Most artists work for pennies today because they are scrammbling for cash- I'm not, and I don't- I won't accept anyone else into this project who will either.

However, I will openly state that the project is un-funded at the moment- that is why I want to put a team together that can help formulate a plan to change that. I don't want this to be free work with a promise at the end of it. I may find, through the opinion of others, that this idea is not viable. In that case, I have met some good people to know, and learned how not to do something. We can just enjoy the privilege of friendships. On the other hand, we may find this to be a very accessible tool in formulating a broader scoped plan, and those who I find valuable to the project, will own it, just like me! Our income is devised before we build.

Simply stated, I'm not looking for a freelancer; I'm looking for a partner, one who wants paid, and can be instrumental in devising that idea.
