1st Annual DBUG Thanksgiving Drupal Games (November Denver Meeting 2010)

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Start:
2010-11-23 18:30 - 20:30 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Because November's DBUG meeting is so close to Thanksgiving, we'll be taking the opportunity to do something a little different. Rather than presenting and discussing, we're going to make Drupal sites live. We'll split into teams, maybe set a few rules, and then make the most awesomest sites we can in 2 hours. As always, we'll have pizza and drinks, and many of us will head down to Breckenridge Brewery afterward to compare and contrast the Drupal awesomeness we've created.

The meet-up will take place at Open Media Foundation, just south of Downtown Denver.

A great idea!

I love this idea! I'm not usually able to make it to the Denver meetups, but I'm going to rearrange things so I can attend this one.

:D I am down. I am so down for this.

What a blast!

First off, hats off to the rest of Team 1 for bringing laptops! Second off, hats off to the rest of Team 1 for listening to my "can we do X?" and what-ifs, not to mention their expertise at making it happen.

Third off, hats off to everybody who came together to make this friendly competition possible. You all have turned out to be another reason why I choose Drupal above all other CMSes. Seriously, no joke.

Fourth off, thanks for changing the bar this month. $1 pulled pork sliders? How can you go wrong?

It's on!!!

I love this idea.

Do you need people to set up domains to use? I can set up a subdomain for my team to use. Let me know ahead of time so that the propagation will complete. Also, I can get a clean copy of D6.19 installed. Or are we going to try to rock out on D7?

Good questions

Those are all good questions, and I don't have answers yet. I'll try to settle some details in IRC soon.

We discussed some ideas about splitting into teams:

  1. Teams should be no more than 4-5 people to allow good communication on the teams
  2. We'll pick team captains based on lowest UID highest CTR
  3. We pick the task - current proposals:
    • Pick a popular non-drupal site and each team tries to build/theme it into Drupal
    • Pick some random modules and see how we can use them in combination

I think building this on external sites will be hard. Instead I suggest that we just make sure every team has at least one person with a development environment that is accessible on the DOM network.

We need music

Can we listen to the Mission Impossible theme during the the exercise? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k55NuWQCh78

I suggest that only CLI, Git and Drush are used for server administration, file system access and Drupal administration when possible. All modules must be installed and enabled using Drush, commits made using Git etc.

Maybe there should be a points system kind of like the Olympics?

At the end of the session points can be awarded based on style, accuracy, agility, teamwork and playing by the rules.

Just a few ideas :-)

We can have all sorts of fun

We can have all sorts of fun and have each team try to build 1 part of the same site and try to merge it all together in the end.

Mashtastico!

I think it's pretty important

I think it's pretty important to point out that this is also a good opportunity for people that are new to Drupal to learn as well. Participation can be fun for all levels and everyone will likely learn from this process.

That was fun!

I had a great time last night doing the Drupal Games.

Agreed.

I'd enjoy this for a weekend event as well.

I got to witness firsthand the amazing talent of our local Drupal community.

Weekend event

sreynen's picture

Jason, Joel, and I talked a bit last night and this morning about how a longer (1 or 2 day) event might work. I'd love to help make that happen. I've done a few different events like that, and always enjoy them. I'd expect it to be even better with everyone already familiar with the same system, i.e. Drupal. We should start talking more about how a longer event could work.

I'd love to have a longer

I'd love to have a longer event. It was cool to see some different ideas utilized with colorpicker, draggable views, etc... (modules I've never used). I thought it was a great idea for a meetup and would certainly like to have it continued in future meetings.

If we were to do a weekend

If we were to do a weekend event, I think it would be cool to have some actual projects for everyone to work on. Maybe find some worthy organizations that need a website we could all donate our time to. I definitely enjoyed working with some of the talented people in our community...

A posted a recap of the event
