Longer Drupal site-building event?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The 1st Annual DBUG Thanksgiving Drupal Games went really well. We made some cool sites, and everyone seemed to have a good time. There was some talk of doing a longer version, maybe 1 or 2 days on a weekend. Let's do it! I thought it would be good to move that discussion to its own thread, so here it is.

I love this idea.
Sreynen, thanks for starting a new thread.

Maybe we could do it the weekend of March 5th or 13th, 2011. <-- Okay, kidding.

I'm definitely in for a

I'm definitely in for a weekend event.

I've seen some other people/groups asking about the event on twitter.. if we do a weekend event it might be fun to try and coordinate with other user groups and do a multiple-city challenge involving slightly larger teams (maybe 2-3 teams per city? depending on turnout..). Just an idea I thought I'd throw out there.

When? Where? What? Who?

When: I'm thinking we should do this in January or February before we get into camp and con planning.

There's also the question of how long it should be. On a weekend, we have Friday night, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday to work with. Just Friday night wouldn't be much different from last time, but I can see any other combination of those working well.

Where: I don't expect we'd be able to occupy OMF for a whole day or weekend, so we'll probably need a new location. Aten is moving around the end of the year to a larger office that could probably work for this.

What: Some ideas of what we might do in a longer event:

  1. Basically the same thing we did last time, only longer and/or multiple times.
  2. Start with more specific pre-definied goals, e.g. clone site X.
  3. Pre-select charities and build sites for them.
  4. Present/brainstorm ideas at the event and form teams around the ideas.

Personally, I like the last option best, but I'd be excited about any of them.

Who: is it worth having a sign-up in advance? What about identifying individual interests, skills, CTR scores, Drupal.org IDs?

Thoughts?

Sounds like fun

Sorry I missed last night, but I had a conflict with The Wall...

Signing up in advance makes sense, if nothing else than projecting logistics.

I see the event as a great way to learn from other Drupalistas.

I think we could learn a lot from the example of...

From the looks of things, the games already have a similar style. Random modules that must be incorporated vs. a prop that must be used, for instance.

Is it necessary that we build a site for a nonprofit, though? Wouldn't they have to have a lot of input beforehand for a page that meets their objectives? Why not a startup? Or an association? Or a community sports team? Or a fan page? Or a template to improve an existing site you think could (and should) be a lot better? Or any other non-commercial entity?

It's a wide, wide world out there. I'm just saying.

I'd love to take part in a longer event

Whether it lasted a whole weekend or even just a whole day, that would be awesome. I like a similar format as we used last night, only we would have a longer time to actually build the site.

While I think it's really noble and cool to build a site for a non-profit, I think the logistics would be too much. Let's keep it fun like last night so that we can do whatever crazy things we want with the site.

I'd like to see enough time alloted for us to get the technical explanations of how things were done on each site as well as the ability to grab all that great code, views, themes, etc. So, it would be great to have an internet accessible server for each site so we could log in front end and back end. We could have volunteers set up the environment ahead of time and make sure to have it configured with SSH, SFTP, drush, and an install of the desired version of Drupal. How about if we use D7 for the next one?

Another idea I would like to throw out there is whether anybody is interested in getting together for some "hack nights"? We could just pick a time and location that would be convenient for whoever wanted to take part and then just start banging away on building stuff with Drupal. Those nights would run for a few hours whenever we could pull a few "Drupalistas" together.

p.s. Sorry I missed the apres-sitebuilding. I must have driven right past the location. I was at Mississippi before I even knew I had missed the joint.
