There's been a fair amount of discussion to hold meetings in North County. Now Matt Young says he can get us access to a good room in Carlsbad, which would be a fairly good location for most.
Now we need to know:
- Would you attend meetings in Carlsbad?
- Do you prefer alternate meetings between Balboa Park and Carlsbad, or additional meetings in North County and leave the regular meetings at HOC as is?
So please leave your comments below and let the sparks fly! I hope something will gel from this and we will run with that.
Update:
Here's what we're going to do:
- Leave the meeting at HOC in Balboa Park as is, second Wed of the month 7 pm
- Run a couple of North County meetings to see how they shape up. Location Museum of Making Music, Armada Drive, Carlsbad, CA. Time: Fourth Wed of the month, 7pm - 9pm. I.e. our first meeting is 1/26/2011 7pm

re: North County Meetings
As a resident of north county who works in Carlsbad, I would love to see meetings held up here! Either alternating with Balboa Park or creating separate meetings in Carlsbad would be fine, but please bring the group to North County!!!
Terrific
Hi Andrew, that's great. We'll grow best if meeting are easy to get to and well-attended. I'm looking forward to spawning a whole new batch of drupalers in Carlsbad. Food and a welcoming spirit is a good meetup starting point. Also, someone who keeps the meetings ontime. Nothing will kill a new group faster than a rambling, never-ending meeting. We'll definitely help you guys ramp up!

north county vs hoc
As I live about equi distant between HOC and Carlsbad I'd prefer alternating meetings between the two so as not to reduce the size of the group. My two cents! Doug

I live in Encinitas and would love a North County meeting. I'm torn about alternating versus having both. It'd be interesting if we had clearly distinct topics. It might make twice as many meetings a far more valuable option.

It's been my experience that having any variability in event details (time, place) tends to lower attendance. Requiring people to remember if this month's meeting is at a different time or place becomes an additional obstacle to attendance.
But then again splitting the group (either alternating or doing both) reduces the power of having really strong numbers at the monthly meetings.
How do things work out up in LA? Don't they have multiple meet-ups?

I hear you on those concerns,
I hear you on those concerns, but as it stands, Balboa Park is simply too far for a number of people to make, regardless of time. Sad but true.
I think we should at least try having a couple meetings up north to see attendance/interest. Promote it as such, and see who comes out.

This might not be an issue
This might not be an issue for San Diego but we've been really careful in Los Angeles to make the point that we're adding a new meetup to accommodate more people and that we're not actually splitting the group.
I agree that it's damaging to momentum whenever there are venue changes or cancellations. I firmly believe that the consistent growth of our group and its meetups is largely due to how hard we try to have our events at regular times at regular locations (or at least a regular area if not a regular address).
I wrote in detail about how LA Drupal's meetups are run at http://groups.drupal.org/node/97124#comment-313884
North County Meetups
Live in Solana Beach, thus Carlsbad might be good place to meet.
I'm a huge fan of north
I'm a huge fan of north county meetings since I live in Encinitas and can't often make it down as it simply takes too much time with the back and forth and traffic.
I share the concerns of splitting attendance and the possibility of lower attendance, though. Perhaps we could have an additional north county meeting that differentiates from the normal monthly meetings in some way. I don't really know this early in the AM on the specifics but +100 on Carlsbad.
Meet ups
I'm not sure where the north county members are concentrated. From my unscientific sample, I'd have to say we have concentrations in Encinitas and Poway.
Rich's experience agrees with mine. Alternating locations is not our best option.
We don't want to endanger the central San Diego group. None of us, particularly the SandCampers, would be happy. The deeper question is whether we have enough underserved north county drupalistas to make a viable group.
What if we start off with something more modest, say a meet up at a coffee house? With Internet and a few laptops, we can solve anything. :-)

Rich has a very valid point,
Rich has a very valid point, and it seems everyone so far is in agreement with him. So the way I see things shaping up is to run a couple of separate meetings in North County and see how it goes. Since I live in UC (hey there, tanyagm) I plan to attend in both locations, at least initially.
I'll ping Matt to chime in, and Joel as well. And if someone has already talked to the LA people about their multiple meeting locations, please share what they had to say.
On a more fundamental level, I take very seriously Kieran Lal's appeal to attract and train new people. This is the main reason why I am involved in running this group and SandCamp. If the pyramid that is the Drupal community is supposed to grow, then growth must start at the base. Talented and dedicated people will "trickle up" on their own, but we must find and nurture them initially. I am hoping that a North County meetup can attract new people from the high tech and biotech communities who by and large live north of the 52.

I'll say this: if I can get help with developing curriculum, I'd be willing to train, even at a discount. There's much I'd need to learn, but I very much want to help distribute better education so that we can have a stronger base of talent to work within the community.
Maybe a 1-2 hour session before each monthly meeting? If we had enough material, I'd be willing to crank it out.

Web meetings?
On another tangent, have we explored the possibility of doing web meetings?
Some of the bigger churches have satellite campuses where they'll still have services at the same time as the main campus, but the satellite campus wil just tune into the sermon part of the meeting, to get the message.
Maybe a similar model might work for SDDUG? There could be a NC meetup at the same time as the one @ Balboa, so people could get together to meet in meat-space with other Drupalistas (Drupalero's?), and then do a video web meeting for the presentations & lightning talks.
Also, with the online aspect, maybe we could also pull in people to attend over the internet.
Or would the resources necessary to pull it off be too much?

I love this idea, and have been trying to get recordings going. Streaming web presence would be another great thing. I'm still learning about the resources needed, but the biggest hurdle is getting people to use them. Educating that is one solution, but getting people to see the value is tough, at least so far.
I'm all for supporting this as an approach. I mentioned to someone at camp about wanting to coerce Cisco into letting us use some tele-conference enabled sites for meetings...

my vote is for meeting in sd. i can echo rich's concerns. if i have to trek to north county, i'm unlikely to attend. given our current workload, it's tough for me to even attend meetings at the HoC. but i also support a test run of 2 locations.

San Diego is a very large county, and Balboa Park is definitely a trek for people on the Northern side... especially after a full day and facing evening traffic.
On the other hand, Balboa Park Group has reached a critical mass where it's possible to achieve more; and Balboa Park Online Collaborative has provided great support. Whatever everyone decides, I think that it's important to maintain the larger group without excluding and losing North County folk.
I think Rich's take on alternating locations is correct. Maybe, North County meetings on an alternative night?
Whose got a location?
I vote for two separate nights and two different locations. This is what World Domination looks like, we need to divide and conquer. (Kieran's words not mine) Let's find a place that can hold 10 to 20 people and see who shows up. Achieve will start calling around tomorrow to see if we can find someone with an open conference room. If someone else has a spot lets pick a night.

Thanks everyone for the lively discussion. We made the Hot Content This Week list in the sidebar for two days running.
Nothing like a camp to energize the group. :-)
From the comments it looks like half a dozen people would participate in North County for sure, and I have one email response and two verbals as well. That makes a good core group.

With regards to the video conferencing in particular, I'm a bit mystified that we're on the bleeding edge of this kind of issue. Not pointing fingers, just kinda surprised that others in the world don't have more to pass on, both inside-or-out of the Drupal community. This isn't a Drupal problem after all...
That being said, if we come up with a solution for this, there's nothing to hold back having shared tele-presence across the world. VideoIRC FTW!

Macs can easily do video with wifi and ichat. You could run a conference phone call for audio at the same time if the audio over ichat isnt sufficient. Im sure there are macs in the room. It doesnt have to be hi def or anything, just enough to get the conversation over the gap. All that being said, Im no vid conferencing expert by any means, just an idea.

Here's my take on North County meetings; Let's do it!
Based upon the discussion here and at the 2011 SANDcamp I'm now in favor of a North County meetup, in addition to the current S.D. meetup, and on an opposing schedule, i.e., the fourth Wednesday of each month. Let's do this!
We'll need commitments from at least 10 people in order to get this kicked off, and a location such as a workspace or maybe a coffee shop. If we want this to be successful at first, let's focus finding a location with WiFi and leave the webinar hookups till phase 2. :)

Keeping Unity, Creating Diversity
I'm very excited to see this very active thread about a North County meetup. I want to laud all you Northern trekkers for making it downtown for both meetups and the SandCamp planning meetings all these years.
Just a note and a vote though, I believe we need to be one user's group with one group page for a holistic and unified voice. I Note that the LA group has grown because there's just ONE group and a lot of momentum. If they broke up into separate LA groups they would create a distinct communication barrier. Let's make our San Diego page hopping with activity; it's how LA has grown to over 1000 members. Our page has been pretty lacking in activity relatively speaking. :)
Since many of my favorite people are up North: Chuck, Shawn, Brenda, Burt, Dave, Matt, Joel, Kathy, Peter, etc. I would be sad to have you in a separate playground.

I read Christefano's writeup. Looks like they use a taxonomy and send messages based on that. Since we already went through the somewhat painful process of setting up a Group page and getting it approved, let us use it for under 1 month and in that time we'll integrate a new workflow for our North County group as a category etc and use that permanently. Until then we'll just use what we made to get immediate items completed...
