Started with this post: Add editor: XStandard (+ other desktop/browser side plug-ins?). Add info & edit to get more structured. Researching for solutions eating lesser server resources, so a desktop/browser side plug-in might be the solution. I haven't seen another like (the quality of) XStandard. But then I found many other browser/desktop editors:

* XStandard Lite. There is another module XStandard but like to have it under this module WYSIWYG for other features.

* BBComposer Firefox 56,573 downloads since Nov. 7, 2006 - 1,097 active users

* Xinha-here Firefox 130,117 downloads Xinha.WebFactional.com The Community-built Open Source Online HTML Editor

* Write-Area Firefox 34,080 downloads - CKEditor core, works with Gecko spellcheck for CKEditor

* Nandu Firefox 58,152 downloads - patched non-updated old EditorZilla

* Mozile Firefox 18,375 downloads - xhtml editing in your browser - Mozile.MozDev.org - nice but not that much dev

* Mimulus Firefox 21,990 downloads - lightweight XHTML editor - InaMidst.com/Mimulus

* Wyona-Yulup 8,754 downloads - Yulup CMS front-end/editor extension as simple as it gets - Yulup.org about.html

* openWYSIWYG OpenWebware free cross-browser editor with just a few simple lines of JavaScript code - features - demo

* GNU.org Emacs is an extensible, customizable text editor - wikipedia:Emacs - wikipedia:Emacs/W3

* XEmacs.org XEmacs highly customizable open source text editor & application development system

* TeXmacs.org GNU TeXmacs free wysiwyw editing platform with special features for scientists

=> Please review what would/could be best?

Best future choices
* Some all around free editor that does this all (desktop-browser-drupal)

Best present choices

* NicEdit.com "NicEdit is extremely lightweight and can be easily integrated in any site with minimal impact while providing visitors an effective means to express themselves in rich text. Don't overwhelm your users with "everything and the kitchen sink" editors that confuse and frustrate your visitors and take forever to load." => works with Drupal module WYSIWYG & former module nicEdit. Note: this is not a desktop/browser plugin, but is the best/fastest without a desktop/browser editor.

* Write-Area Firefox CKEditor core, works with Gecko spellcheck => as this is the only desktop/browser CKEditor, the choice seems simple for more advanced users to install this themselves. This should get to work with the module WYSIWYG and WYSIWYG should produce different definable messages based on different user roles, where to get it and how to install.

* XStandard Lite. There is another module XStandard but I like to have it under this module WYSIWYG for other features.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but I do a lot of WYSIWYG CSS editing in Firefox with the Web Developer addon's Edit CSS feature. Combined with Firebug to inspect code and selectors it's an efficiency tool!
