Each-one-teach-one?

JacobSingh's picture

I'm hoping we'll see a whole lot of new faces as a follow up to the camp. Since we're likely to have a broad range of interests and many folks who are still pretty new to Drupal, I was thinking it would be nice to try something a little different. Here's a rough idea on a each-one-teach-one approach:

People volunteer to buddy up with new people, or perhaps old people who need a skill you have, and do two rotations of 20-30 min each of a one-on-one exchange. This will help new folks get oriented, get to know someone and not get intimidated or bored by advanced topics. I'm not trying to organize a camp-like session schedule here, but just generally get people to self-identify into broad groups of interest / knowledge.

I'm hoping people will +1 to say they can teach or want to be taught the following, or suggest your own. Worse comes to worse, we could just pair up all new people at the DUG with vets and just do a little geek speed dating :)

1). Introduction to Drupal. What is this thing? How do you say it? Where does it fit in among tools on the internet? How do I get started building a site? What's open Source, etc, etc.

2). I have a Drupal site, now what modules should I add? How do I configure "stuff"

3). How do I build a module with Drupal?

4). How do I build a theme with Drupal?

Best,
Jacob

Learn/ Teach?

cwworks's picture

I have two interests in learning:
1. Performance enhancement and debugging resource limit issues.
2. Creating a great development environment and best practices for maintaining an international Drupal site (dev-staging-production cycle with no good time to be down). Still questing :-).

To teach?
1. I'm still primarily a learner here but I can help people with getting started with Drupal coming from a Joomla background or talk about the top three mistakes I've made getting started with Drupal.
But I've got a lot to learn, so hopefully I'll get to date a lot of great geeks. :-)

For #2 learning, I could

For #2 learning, I could explain the git/hudson/redmine setup we use at left-click, but probably only have enough time for a general overview

Good idea for everyone

+1

I think it is important that we not lose the new attendees we are sure to have. Just chatting in pairs about our paths in Drupal would be good for everyone.

I'm not the bundle of questions I used to be around Drupal since I now have super-experienced colleagues at Imbee to answer any questions I might have. But I definitely remember what it was like starting out a couple of years ago!

As far as specialties, I've used the OpenPublish distribution in the past and know how to import InDesign content into a Drupal-based site. I use Eclipse Helios on a Mac with PDT, Zend Debugger, and Camino as an external web browser for debugging. I also use SVN both locally and with Acquia (Imbee's host) and have my Eclipse PHP projects source-controlled. (Those of you who have tried setting up Eclipse may want to talk to me, if you have troubles.)

Through my blog at http://crotown.com I teach fellow Drupal developers, as time permits.

Before I became a Drupaller, I was (reverse chronologically) a C/C++ software engineer, a computer scientist, a high school teacher, and a physics researcher.

Cheers,
Steve
