Drupal Code Sprint in Manila
Anyone interested in a Drupal Code Sprint?
Next month I'll be in Manila to attend my cousin's wedding. While in town, I thought it would be fun to organize a Code Sprint. The purpose of this Sprint will be to build a web site for a local non-profit organization...and get to know the local Drupal community in the process.
Basically we would meet up to design, build and deploy a website from scratch. After several hours (and a pizza break in-between), we would have a finished, fully functional, Drupal-powered site.
I'm working with DL and Rick from collectivetech.org to find a local non-profit that is in need of a web site. I'm working with marc.robinsone to secure a space in Manila to hold it at.
The tentative date is Sunday, July 13. This Sprint will only last one day. To participate, the only real requirement is that you have already built a web site using Drupal. Programming experience is helpful but not necessary.
If we have a large enough turnout, we could even divide the team into groups. One group could work on the non-profit's web site, while another group could work on a different project, such as improving a Drupal contributed module.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please reply to this post or contact me directly. I'd like to get an estimate on the number of people who would likely attend.
Thanks!
UPDATE: Our Code Sprint is on! The event details are posted here.

Getting ready to rock and roll
Hi all!
We're getting ready for this event.
Just so you know, I will attend and fully support this mini-gathering of like-minded (and Drupal-addicted) individuals.
If I'm not mistaken, invitation to join the fun is still open! How fun would it be if there's just 3 or 4 of us?
Kaya mga 'tol, tara na!
Walang iwanan...
Would like to try participate in thsi event
Purely just for fun, though probably doing a layout would be a nice. However I only knows basic drupal and a couple of drupal modules.
Just be there
@hwf829: Just be there, we'll see from there. Besides, the more people present the more ideas there will be, it's a good way of meeting a few like minded people and could be a fun way to learn a few new things.
I'll try to be there, that is if i'm not too sick by then anymore. I'm just waiting to know where and when now :)
Non-profit org yet?
Hi guys,
Has a non-profit been chosen yet for this event? I know a non-profit org here in QC willing to have their site created by our group.

Narrowing down the list of non-profits
Hi Dino,
Thank you for helping in our search for a worthy (and willing) non-profit organization. We wanted to be fair, and let as many organizations know about our offer as possible. So DL and Rick contacted several non-profits in the area, to see if they would be interested.
Please let DL or Rick know the name of the QC org you found, so that we can add them to our short list of interested groups. We should decide on one soon.
Thanks!
May I self-nominate?
Hi,
1st off, sorry, am Cebu based & bound (bisdak kuno), so will be with you in my still-minimal-drupal-capable spirit only.
Long shot but I'll take your chides - anyways, I belong to a religious community (Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen & Professionals - www dot bcbp dot org). Being the lone IT pro (kuno gihapon) in our local chapter (Mactan, Cebu - www dot bcbpmactan dot org), I was tasked a long time ago to create a web site, w/c I did with joomla, then trying hard till now to switch to DRUPAL, with desirable features w/c I was not able to deliver ... hu..hu..hu..
Aside from the usual website features - the desired 'crema de fruta' was to hold primarily a database of members --
- couple or single, individual spouse or family profile/info
- tracking attendance to various events, teachings, seminars, assemblies, etc.
- online seminars, teachings, talks -- text or rich media
- etc.
If a generic one could be developed, contributed/distributed to these religious organizations, for them to theme, tweak according to their needs (I know there are many of these organizations trying hard to make an online impression). There was a Drupal installation profile for religious organizations I happened to download a few months back but it did not quite get me to what I wanted for the site. Tried also civicrm to no avail.
So what do you think guys?
Cheers

Pinokyo Foundation
Hi Guys,
There is one organization, headed by a very nice lady who used to work at Singapore..
Her story was featured iby Bernadette Sembrano.
You may Google her as 'luisa tayco' or 'Pinokyo Foundation'
One great story. Their organization really needs help.

Recommendation
It's not that i'm not into Drupal but i recommend to you to create your own CM-system so that you won't be closed on using Drupal syntax. Honestly, i would use Drupal if a site is barely that simple but if there are things that's complicated enough for you to design then it's time for you to go back to basic (PHP).
Think outside of the box.
I'm not sure I follow where
I'm not sure I follow where you're going ...
Isn't the fact that Drupal is completely modular a good base to start? If custom stuff is needed you can always build a new module, right?
I mean, i've seen some Drupal based sites that seem to be heavily customized ... Granted you have to know quite some PHP but it's possible I think
Noted..
The fact that we are working with an opensource systems, we are free to expand the systems we wanted to use.. You're right you can create your own module under drupal and it's cool. Although i've tried creating before, i end up creating my own system maybe because i'm a lazy person =) really sorry guys if i recommend what i did.
No need to be sorry
You don't have to be sorry for having an opinion, besides open discussion allows for progress
Thanks! Will do.
Thanks! Will do. :)

need volunteers?
code sprint sounds interesting. if you need help organizing this, i volunteer to help out. :) have done some volunteer work for the joomla user group and would love to volunteer for this group too.
Welcome to the group!
Thanks majill and welcome to the group! I can vouch for majill's skills in organizing various _open_source_related_activities. :)
Looks like..
Looks like Rick, DL and J are doing a great job in organizing this event.
I think we were not able to mention back how pleased and touched we are with people volunteering for this group activity. Though, I I think some of the pre-organizing tasks were completed already. Just so you know, we are communicating via mobile/chat/mail working with our day jobs, and sometimes we forget to post updates online.
Needless to ask, we'll definitely need more brainpower in our next event (this one might be a first, but not necessarily need to be a perfect initiation) This code sprint is coming out from the good heart of J Francisco who will be coming back to the Philippines all the way from Hawaii (I'm proud of you man! Pasalubong naman dyan? lol).
Sayang lang kasi kung nakilala kaagad natin ang isa't-isa mas malaki yung chance na marami tayo na makakapag-organize nito (thanks majill. Very nice meeting you in Cebu)
Guys, we are very sure to help those foundations in the future. We (Philippines, Earth, Milky Way inhabitants) encourage anything that will help us enjoy spreading the virus! Oops, spreading the "love" of open source and Drupal to our fellow fellows.
Kaya huwag nang mahiyang pumunta o makialam (in a good way ha) sa Filipino Drupal Code Sprint na ito!
Respectfully urs,
Marc Robinsone
p.s. If you are sick, don't share the virus there ha? lol
