I wanted to get this done last weekend, but time got away from me.
Here is the event for the next LVDUG meeting: March 4 from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM (or whenever we finally leave) at Pinkpeas Pregnancy and Parenting Care Center (the same time and place as last time, but on the first Friday of the month, rather than the second). Feel free to show up a few minutes early to get situated. Hopefully, I won't have any clients deleting users off their server (or something similar) next time. You may contact me at 702 (hyphen) 308 (hyphen) 2602 if you get lost or turned around or ....
Last time, it was mentioned that everyone could help a little by contributing to the refreshments, so I'm putting that up here for people to volunteer for. What we need are the following:
- 3 people to volunteer to bring a six pack of soda (whatever you deem appropriate).
- 3 people to volunteer to bring a six pack of beer or hard cider (whatever you deem appropriate, although corporate brews will probably not be touched).
- 4-6 to volunteer to bring a snack of some sort (chips, cookies, cut veggies, etc.). I don't think we need full blown dinners, but some thing to munch on would sure be nice.
Be sure to buy something you prefer, because you will be taking your leftovers home with you. :^)
I will have drinking water available (not tap water), an ice chest (smaller than last time) with ice to keep the beverages cold and probably a six pack of my favorite beer.
We also would like two people to step up and volunteer to present something at the meeting: one presentation at a more introductory or basic level and one at a more advanced level. They should be about 15-20 minutes long and expect a little Q&A related to your presentation during and afterward.
For ideas about presentation topics, review Future Meetings for what is being discussed about the last meeting and potential plans for future meetings. Personally, I'm really interested in learning about setting up and using Aegir. So if there's anyone who knows anything about that...
I think as compensation, presenters should not be expected to bring anything other than their materials.
Also, one of our members is allowing us to use his projector for the meeting, and I have access to a screen, so we should have it a little easier seeing the presentation this time. I will have a VGA cable, so if your computer doesn't support that output connector, please bring an adapter.
So, signup for the event, leave a comment telling everyone how you plan to contribute, and show up!

Theming in DG & Migrating to Godaddy
I have now successfully migrated 3 websites from Drupal Gardens onto my shared Linux hosting at GoDaddy. I could do a intro to prototyping and theming in DG, setting up the database on Godaddy, and migrating the website to the new host. It's not the same installation process as Drupal 6 or 7.
It's more of a beginner user topic, but a timely one, since DG will start charging for hosting on March 15. I have written up instructions as well.
Awesome! I have done the
Awesome! I have done the same. I would like to see what techniques you used in the migration to see if I am doing it in a similar way.
Did you put the 3 sites into a multi site setup on the new host?
I have done this, with some hacking around on permissions etc. Got it to work, but it was a bit clunky. I think this is a great topic for a presentation.
Godaddy Host
I have each site up on its own domain with a unique economy shared Linux hosting plan for each. Right now GoDaddy is offering this type of hosting for $1.99 a month for 3 months until the end of February. This is a HUGE savings over Drupal Gardens which will be charging $99+ a year and up for domain forwarding. These are small sites that don't need a lot of bandwidth or storage space yet.
I haven't migrated onto any other hosting provider or multi-site hosting (yet) and would love to hear about how the process differs. Permissions did get hairy the first time, and I worked out a streamlined process specifically for Godaddy. I also still haven't posted the instructions up on DG, and continue to debate over whether or not I should, but I'd be more than happy to share them with you all.
Later she writes....
It just occurred to me that we could use Drupal Gardens to build our LVDUG website then migrate it together as part of this demo. Thoughts?
I think you are better off
I think you are better off just using a demo site to demonstrate the principles.
We don't really have any concrete ideas about what to do with an LVDUG site yet, so it wouldn't really be worth it.

refreshments and volunteer-ism ftw
I am up to bring soda and snacks. I think I will leave the beer to the beer experts though :-P. I really enjoyed that sweet micro-brew that you brought last time though :-).
Let me know if there is anything in particular anyone wants, otherwise I think I will go with the basic potato chip selection. (and possibly a deli platter maybe?)
As far as presentations go. I am willing to give one. I don't know on what though lol. I just set up a SOLR search server and integrated it with the production site I am working on. I was actually really impressed with how simple and effective it was. I set up the SOLR daemon on the same server as the web host, so I don't have experience with a multi-server setup, but the theory for it is there. In fact I would categorize the difficulty of the task to be, surprisingly, beginner to intermediate level, at least with a basic setup. So, if anyone is interested in a tutorial on that, let me know.
I also think it would be cool to learn more about Aegir.
and, hurray for the projector!
see you soon,
Ray

+1 for a presentation of
+1 for a presentation of getting Solr setup from scratch. I have been wanting to learn how to do this and just haven't had the time to mess around with it yet.
As for Aegir, I maintain several Aegir instances and can do a presentation on how to set it up. With each release it gets a little easier to do. RC1 was just released and I feel pretty confident that we could go through the whole process and get it working in a 20 - 30 minute hands on demo.
I can save this until the April meetup as my vote stands for Ray's Solr setup presentation.
:-P
side note
On a side note, I have a side job as a server tech at a small hosting company. They are gutting my data-center,and hopefully putting in fancy new servers :-).
Because of this, I have like 15 - 20 old pentium 3 and pentium 4 Dell tower servers, and possibly even a few rack mounted servers that I need to find homes for. They are decent servers; they have been running centos in production for years lol.
Let me know if anyone wants one or two or five, lol. I will bring a few.

yay servers!
I have a friend who would like one of these tower servers. If you get a rack server, I wouldn't mind taking one off those your hands.
"old" systems
I (the Foundation For Caregivers) could use 2 if you still have them. Actually 3 would be best as it would give me spare parts in case one breaks. If it is any benefit to you or your company we are a 501(c)3 so these would be considered a donation for tax purposes.
thanks

Presentations for March
I think I've waited long enough for people to chime in on this. If anyone else wants to make a bid, they can fight for presenting next month. We'll go with druplette demonstrating exporting a site from Drupal Gardens and rayman22201 demonstrating installing, setting up and integrating Apache Solr with a Drupal installation. Remember, a DE-15 VGA connector is what is available.
Also, we have someone who wants to take pictures and video and post them to promote the group, so if you have an aversion to being photographed, be sure to speak up.
I was just about to ask if a
I was just about to ask if a final decision had been made about the presentations lol. Cool. I will start preparing something then.

camera shy
I am super duper camera shy... If anyone takes a picture of me, do it fast when I'm not looking so I don't know, otherwise I run from cameras.
Presenter of the night
It was another fun meeting. I apologize for not having my presentation ready XD, though at least I got to play server Santa Clause lol.
I think druplette should get presenter of the night, lol. Even with her technical difficulties, she was the most prepared, and held the attention of the target audience members very well.
I give my solemn oath I will have my SOLR presentation ready by next time lol. I have to go all out to make up for the failure of this meeting XD. Thanks to z3cka for picking up my slack though. The Aegir/Git/Features primer was awesome lol.

thanks Ray :)
for both the kind words and the servers!
