Ical feed for upcoming events in this group.
dublin is good for me...
...but i wouldn't be able to come that frequently, even though i'm in wicklow. would probably be available to come on a quarterly basis.
I'd be up for it! Close to
I'd be up for it! Close to city centre would probably be best.
I've been quitely listening
I've been quitely listening so far. I work for dotMobi (met Stella in the past).
We do a lot of Drupal development and we'd love to help out the meeting.
How many of us could it be? How many joined past meetings? Would this be just have a beer and network or do we need meeting rooms?
quietly listening
Sounds great atrasatti, would be brilliant to get you guys on board, try and make something good and steady from the drupal group in dublin. There are normally about 8 average at our meetings, mostly Adobe / Multimedia developers in the group. We dont need meeting rooms but possibly best to showcase / present as we already have the UCD room available to us. Its nothing fancy but still, its ours. I suggest we start there for the first meetup. Can I take it that when we agree on a date, I can put you down for demonstration / initial drupal tutorial to the group?
Count us in
Amax, I don't know if it'll be me or someone else from the company, but I suppose we can get something cool ready for that day.
+1
Yep,
I'd be up for it.
Saturdays would suit best.
I wouldn't be able to make a monthly meeting, but would probably be able to make it every 2 months or so.
Alan
Yes, I would be up for it...
I would suggest Thursday evening or Saturday for those who need to travel to Dublin. Any ideas for a venue?
Cool, thats 4 so far. A few
Cool, thats 4 so far. A few others and I (about 8 in total) currently run an Adobe Meet-up group, once a month in a room within University College Dublin, close to the city center. Was thinking of allocating one of these time periods for our drupal session as a few in the group are very interested in Drupal, but have no direct experience with it. How does October 9th Sound if I can work this with the others. Who will be the expert among you to lead the presentation if we make this happen? If successful, we can def make this a regular thing with a few drinks in town afterwards for those wishing to spend the weekend
cant make it :-(
sorry, that (oct 9) is one of the few days i have already got something on in october! will hopefully be available for the next one...
Sorry, Can't do midweek...
Sorry, Can't do midweek...
One more...
Hello all,
I'm pretty new to using Drupal having just dabbled in HTML and CSS up until now but I'm finding the whole learning process fascinating. I'm currently living in Dublin and would definitely up for a meeting on the 9th, cheers
sounds good
i don't know my schedule for october yet. but i could do a mid-week meeting. days might actually be better, because then people from out of town don't need to arrange accommodation.
amax asked - "Who will be the expert among you to lead the presentation if we make this happen?"
not sure what other meetings were like, but the last one we had was fairly informal- people suggested topics on the forum, i think to check if there was any overlap, and a bunch of people gave presentations... the thing that is nice about drupal is anyone can offer something in terms of their area of expertise, and can show or demonstrate something.
anyway, just a thought.
sounds good to me
I'd love to come. We're working on a pretty huge Irish Drupal site at the moment, which will be live by September. I'll have a chat with our client and see if they'd be up for presenting it. It's got some pretty awesome stuff :-)
N
I may be able to organise a
I may be able to organise a venue around the center of town need to get back to you guys on that -- thats a maybe
but a casual met up would be great in September just to see what every one is doing
Depends on the structure if it was an evening or an entire day what can people present on - Id suggest an evening first just to see what people are interested in and then maybe plan a Saturday so that other users from around the country can come - in particular it gives the guys in galway a chance to make it over.
I would suggest that the first meeting might go through setting drupal up on a local server so that any newbies get an idea for developing and testing and maybe some theming -
Any volunteers
Topics that i would be interested in seeing
Module development - exposing to views
Form API caching
Advanced Views
RSS feeds for exporting into swf files
Feel free to add to this and any subjects that you can cover - Any chance heather you can fill us in on what happens at Drupalcon Szeged some of us cant go - would be a nice presentation ;)
later guys

drupalcon
yeah sure, be glad to. stella is also going- and alan burke who is in galway is also going.
i'm in Dublin 5th-10th of September. I don't know when you were planning your meeting for?
i'm in sligo, in case that wasn't obvious.
Everyone, this is sounding
Everyone, this is sounding great. I can definitely confirm October the 9th as the first initial casual meet up in UCD Dublin. Proposed agenda:
1) Brief introduction from everyone and interests, followed by
2) walkthrough of setting up and installing drupal for newbie’s as suggested by Somes followed by
3) Presentation by atrasatti or someone from the company on how they have been using Drupal
followed by drinks or a meal
Would 7pm suit everyone? or should we go for earlier. At this meeting we can decide on a dedicated date / venue and presentation / tutorial structure going forward
dotMobi presentation
Just FYI, my full name is Andrea Trasatti and I work for mTLD (aka dotMobi).
You can see our fairly standard Drupal site with many standard modules and 2-3 tweaks of our own here, http://dev.mobi/.
We are about to re-launch it and there will be much more in-house development involved (wait a couple more weeks or less).
We have another site, with much more in-house developed modules, called DeviceAtlas (you need to register on dev.mobi first and then login to DeviceAtlas with the same credentials). We have developed a device database based on Drupal. I think this second implementation is a bit out of the standards, thus more interesting for Drupal developers (hopefully will generate new ideas to use Drupal.
Being completely focused on mobile, as a company, we also plan to develop, in our "spare time", a module to access Drupal content on your mobile device. This should be a combination of a module and a theme.
I think my colleague Daniel Hunt (aka zoro) will most likely be the speaker, but I'd like to keep the door open for any of the two of us to speak.
So what we can talk about is one of these two projects.
I also have a question about the audience of the meetup. I assumed it would be (fairly) experienced Drupal developers, but from your ideas of providing install instructions and test servers to play with, I suspect it'll be more generic. What was your plan?
I don't know how many
I don't know how many experienced Drupal developers there are in Ireland. This group only has 33 members and hasn't been that active until recently, so it's hard to know. At the last Drupal meetup in Galway, I think 14 people turned up. IIRC about half of them were newbies - not all necessarily newbies to Drupal, but newbies to Drupal module development. Scor or the others who attended the event might remember more accurately. I think the Drupal community within Ireland is still in its infancy, which is why I think a Dublin event would be great. It would have potential to reach a greater audience and help get people involved in Drupal development.
experienced developers
I can only speak about the people I know or heard of! in Dublin there is also John Morahan who does core stuff, and Dublin Drupaler although I have not seen much activity lately in the irish group. anyone else? speak up!
from our group in Galway: AlanBurke, vjordan, cloud and myself. I don't know how much experience have the other members of the irish group. maybe they will let us know?
I'm the developer of
I'm the developer of UIEForum, and working for dotMobi now. There's one more Dublin Drupal head you add to your list :)
I don't know if I'll be at the event or not, but I'm certainly interested in attending at the moment.
another (near) dubliner
based in wicklow town. i'm a developer, but not a drupal developer (yet). have set up lots of drupal websites tho, with some tweaks.
Drupalcon
Anyone else going to Drupalcon? I'll be giving a couple of presentations at Szeged (assuming the proposals get accepted!) so I'd be willing to present these again at the Dublin meetup if people are interested. I'm based in Dublin, so I'm also willing to help out with any organisational stuff that needs to be done.
Presentations I'm participating in:
* Using the Code Review module - http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions/using-code-review-module
* Using jQuery in your Drupal Modules - http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions/using-jquery-your-drupa...
I just registered for
I just registered for DrupalCon and will present Neologism and talk about the Semantic Web and Drupal: http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/sessions/drupal-and-semantic-web...
I'm based in Galway, and interested to come to Dublin for a meeting, but can't do mid-week - Saturday would be perfect.
Stella, we would love to see
Stella, we would love to see these presentations. We should consider broadcasting and recording the Oct 9 Drupal
meeting using Adobe Connect. We set this up with Adobe before hand and liaise with Marion on internet connection, etc. Let me
know if you'd like this set up along with a social event afterward. Was also considering Posters and some other material for display in UCD. If anyone has any good material / posters from other meetups could you please send them on. Would I be right in saying we have about 10-15 from the group subscribed here attending?
I think we'll probably have
I think we'll probably have more than 10-15 people attending. However, I think the only way to get the numbers will be to organise it at a weekend. Not everyone is in Dublin and we should try to keep that in mind. If we're thinking of a more casual meetup just so we can organise a weekend event and get to know one another, then yeah mid-week evenings are fine - though UCD is a bit awkward for me to get to at present (working on the North side). Having said that I'm not aware of any free venues elsewhere and that'll probably be the deciding factor. It'd be great if we could meet sooner than October, perhaps in August or September, and then organise a bigger weekend based event for October?
Hi Stella, due to other
Hi Stella, due to other commitments with the venu and group, the earliest we can arrange this for is October 9th. It will be impossible to accomodate everyone so lets just agree with October 9th for the initial meeting. Those that cant make it can join us on Breeze, and see how we get on. At this, we can organize the weekend event and decide how to grow the group. Last thing I want is to start this and have it a one off as there will be laot of commitment from the guys here. We'll bulk email addresses of those from around Ireland who attended Westmoreland and ask our group to promote it individually. We will do a test Breezo for our local adobe Sept 11 meeting so we'll have a clue how to do it properly on Oct 9, test Connect with people from Donegal to Waterford and if
one or 2 from Drupal group attend, familiarise them with the setup as well. Note above is a testing of Breeze, we may run into any number of technical problems, slow servers, firewalls, whatever, all part of the fun as we have bene looking an execuse to try this out for a while. Can I have 2 (as many as possible) names that I can count on to come to a sep 11th meeting in UCD dublin and help us prepare for the october 9th session?
I would love to help.
I would love to help. Unfortunately I can't commit to being at either of the two events since they're mid-week, and I've applied to do a part-time masters which will have me tied up with lectures for 2-3 evenings each week.
I'll still help out where I can though. I used to organise tech talks (in Liberty Hall, cheap, but not free) for the open-source community when I worked with Doolin Technologies. I still have a few contacts, so can prod them about letting their members know.
Where is the venue in UCD and how many people can it take? Also what's the Westmoreland event you referred to?
+1 with stella - A Saturday
+1 with stella - A Saturday meet up would suit every one but it would be a good idea to have brief meeting/presentations so we can see if we can get the whole thing off the ground.
I'm already part of the UCD-MMUG group, we meet usually the second Thursday of the month out in the agricultural block in UCD - mainly focusing on adobe software, the last couple of presentations have been on using actionscript all interesting stuff...
I dont know amax if I would like to see drupal taking over the UCD group as there is a substantial amount of content that can be covered within drupal and the guys there may be more interested in Coldfusion (I know the shame of it !!!!!), it would be better if we could get a group going that uses drupal here in dublin. here's a link to the MMUG - UCD group http://ria.meetup.com/11/members/ if anyone is interested in joining.
I'll be around as an extra set of hands :)
Also +1 for recording sessions

lol it really is a small
lol it really is a small world here in little old Ireland stella. This is so funny lol. That is our group exactly, and location, but we obviously havent had a chance to meet yet at these meetups :) Had a great papervision one last week. Colm and fintan etc have agreed to host this meeting as there was alot of interest expressed in the group from some of us following drupal. Are you subscribbed to the MMUG emails as we have been chatting to each other alot on preparation for October 9th Meeting? Everyone is very excited and plan is def not to take over the MMUG group but to kick start the drupal one on october 9th slot with the resources we already.
...ill say it again, it really is a small world
No, I'm not a member of a
No, I'm not a member of a MMUG. I must admit I didn't know there was such a group. However, I thought you said that you met in UCD, not Liberty Hall?
Marketing Material
Does anyone have any posters / marketing material from past drupal events they can send to me. Are there any "rules" around the promotion of a drupal event?
plan a date well in advance
we didn't use any marketing material for our meetings in Galway, but you are free to come up with some if you have some funding to print out flyers and posters. So far online marketing has worked quite well and is also dead cheap!
Irish Webmaster Forum
Also I think post a message on the www.irishwebmasterforum.com I frequent there and I know a few people are interested in Drupal, but probably don't know how to start or where to start.
I'm in Dublin myself so would prefer a meet there, and I think we have the potential to draw more people since its a larger city, but I'd be willing to travel - provided there was plenty of notice.
Cheers,
Gavin.
I am still good for concrete
I am still good for concrete October 9th Venue at UCD Gavin , as introduction / see how we get on,. Sorry for lack of posts recently, will get info sent out and confirmed over the next 2 weeks but keep that date in your Diary if possible
I can't go as it's on an
I can't go as it's on an evening during the week. I don't think I'm the only one. If it was at a weekend that would be different. We should really try to organise one for a weekend so we can get more people to go. If we can re-organise it for a more accessible time, then I can give the two presentations (jQuery and Coder) that I'm giving here in Szeged. If that's not possible, then best of luck with the event.
Cheers,
Stella
Weekend event.
Yep, coming from the West for a weekday event isn't really possible for me either.
Hopefully, somebody can step up and arrange a venue for a Saturday sometime.
Assuming I can make it, I can present something on themeing, and the Views Module [or whatever is needed] .
Alan
:(
yeah I can't make it to dublin on the 9th either... but i'm going to try and get something small for the northwest people who may be interested... if there are any?
weekend probably better...
Hey all ... Forbairt on IWF and boards and a few other places ...
I'd have to describe my interest in drupal as more of a hobby at the moment as I haven't had enough time to do anything properly.
Anyways I'd definitely be on for a meetup but don't think I could contribute anything much.
Weekends / Friday / Saturday would probably be better for me .. (even though I'm living pretty much in the city center)

Dublin Weekend Event
Hi,
I've been looking into venues for a Saturday event in Dublin, since so many of us can't make it to upcoming Thursday one in September. I think we should go ahead with the Thursday one, but this one should take place in October / November and be aimed at a wider audience so more people can participate. I should possibly start a separate thread for this, but initial post can go here.
The only disadvantage to a weekend event is that we don't have a free venue like the guys in Galway. So I've done some investigation into costs. All of the following prices are based on a 30 seater room, for a Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
So it looks like Liberty Hall or the Morgan Hotel are winning. I've still to hear back from the Royal College of Surgeons, and a few other hotels. Does anyone else have any ideas? Is 30 people a good enough estimate?
Does anyone have any ideas on how we may fund this? Anyone on the list know of a company that might be willing to sponsor us? If we were to pay for it all ourselves, and assume 30ppl come, then that's EUR 10-15 each. Is this too high?
I'm going to talk to people involved in organising the ILUG and SAGE events to see if they've any suggestions.
Will keep you posted!
Cheers,
Stella
Wow!
Fair play on all the work, Stella.
I think it's time for a new thread.
Some quick points.
I didn't realise how lucky we were in Galway with such a top class venue at our disposal.
[We now have two - I was speaking to my boss about Drupalcon, he said we could use the boardroom whenever we want too!
It's a bit smaller though.]
No objections to 10-15 euro.
Surely we could get some venue cheaper - did you try the digitial hub to see if they could offer anything?

New thread already started,
New thread already started, along with a poll on dates which suit people. I've a contact in the Digital Hub who is going to check it out for me. Still waiting to hear back.
Cheers,
Stella
sounds great
Hi Stella, this sounds great, much much more formal and exciting than what we have planned for the thursday session at UCD. For those who cant make the thursday introduction, we are going to broadcast it on breeze, but final details are to be arranged next thursday at our adobe meeting to get all the others input on the drupal meetup, and then I will report back, and sort everyone out with a link. 30 people would be an amazing turnout, would not be complaining at all about 10-15 for the opportunity for us all to get together
Drupal Session Live - Dublin 2008
We had a quick meeting last night and the guys at MMUG have decided to broadcast and record our presentations on Drupal at their Adobe connect site - so I was wondering if anyone might be interested in recording a 20 minute presentation to be recorded on the site and broadcast later on the night of the live session
We probably will have 2 live presentations that will go out live from UCD but the group we thinking that it would be a good idea to have one recorded if not two pre-recorded sessions -
any one up for it
the plan would be to release the link about a week before "session live" (drupal.org and other social website's) on the 9th Oct - so every one can have a look
any Q's get in touch
live sessions we were planing for going live (20 minutes each)
