Detroit Drupal Group...Meetup?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
Rob_Feature's picture

Hey all...
To my knowledge this group has never had a meetup. Personally, I think I've found a critical mass of Drupalers in the Detroit area who would participate in a meetup. Whatta ya say? Should we set a date and location and make it happen?

(if this group has done a meetup, fill us in on when, where, and how it went)

I would like to see one happen.

I think we could get space at Automation Alley in Troy....

I'd try

I'd attempt to come...

Count me in

micahw156's picture

Monday or Tuesday evenings are best for me, Wednesdays and Thursdays are pretty much out. I commute from far northwest Oakland County to Dearborn every day, so I'm open to meeting almost anywhere, though I'd prefer it to not be too far on the east side.

Micah

Let's do it...

jmdgls's picture

I'm new to Drupal, and a Detroit-area meetup would be great. So what areas are we thinking? ...

Royal Oak
- 5th Avenue or O'Tooles?

Dearborn
- Bailieys?

Novi
- Mixx or the Post?

If this has to be on a Tuesday or Thursday, then Dearborn works best for me.

Cheers,

Just tell me when and where...

I will be there!!!

Location...

Hey All...
If it's ok with everyone else, it looks like mfer and myself will step forward and get this setup. We've got a 'critical mass' of folks we know of that will attend for sure. Many (most) of them are from the western suburbs (novi, farmington, etc) or the north (waterford) but I realize that many of you are on the east side as well.

We're going to propose that we structure our meetings at a central point to all these areas such as somewhere along Telegraph. This should allow the most people to be able to meet without driving a really long way.

We possibly have a meeting spaces at a church on Telegraph and Lone Pine (which would be as close to central as we can get). If we can confirm that we'll setup a date. Anyone opposed to these plans? We'll plan on trying to move this forward.

Sounds like a decent plan. Coming from Rochester Hills. A lot closer than A2.

I'm in too

frednwright@drupal.org's picture

I can offer a couple of places to meet as well (Michigan Theological Seminary), I have lots of room at my offices in Livonia (Joy and Merriman), and can also get rooms at the Northville Public Library (downtown Northville).

Location

mojodean@drupal.org's picture

It looks like we should have no problem using Advent Episcopal Church in West Bloomfield (Middlebelt & Long Lake) if that works for everyone. So what is the day?

Another Location Available

RyanGoble's picture

My church is available, 3600 Telegraph road, between long lake and square lake, Bloomfield Hills Baptist Church, we have a T1 but not nearly the nice setup that MTS offered for the web 2.0 conference. So no microphones, not the best projectors for presenting but scheduling will not be a issue.

Much Better Location

mojodean@drupal.org's picture

Bloomfield Hills Baptist is going to be in a better location than Advent. Ryan, is that a go on the date suggested?

I like....

Rob_Feature's picture

I'm into this location....longlake/square lake. Seems totally midpoint between east and west side. Mojodean/Ryan, would both your locations have wireless? I think either would be good if it had good space and good wireless....

Let's pick a location and set a date!

Wireless router

mfer's picture

If there is no wireless at a location but there is high speed I'll bring a wireless router.

Are we thinking week day night? If so, what nights work. I'm a no go for Wednesday nights.

Weeknights

micahw156's picture

As I posted earlier, Wednesdays and Thursdays are bad for me. Given enough notice, I can make just about any Monday or Tuesday night work.

I vote Monday

I vote for Monday night. I can't do Tues/Thurs nights.

11th or 18th?

18th

In response to Matt's tweet, the 18th is good for me. I've been waiting to hear from those hosting. I should also be able to make it on the 25th, though the 18th is better for me.

Let's Lock in The 18th!

Rob_Feature's picture

Ok, I think we have enough folks to make it so.

Let's lock in the 18th.

Mojodean or Ryan, can either of you confirm that date at your locations? Please post back asap.

No go here

Not going to happen at the church I proposed. Any word from Ryan?

Suggestion

connectedgeek's picture

I found a Joomla group (http://webdesign.meetup.com/483/calendar/7606262/) that meet at MotorCity Joe's in Warren (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendI...). It is obvious that it works for them... there. I would like to propose us starting somewhere... anywhere. To get the ball rolling. So, I will contact them tomorrow and ask what needs to happen to allow us to come and play. Also, we could always meet at Borders. I know Internet is key to our success; however we don't need it communicate about stuff :)

I have created a facebook group... please join and I will create an event in there about the meetup.

"private" location

Rob_Feature's picture

Let me throw this out there: I think I'd personally rather wait until we had a place to meet that wasn't just in an uncontrolled 'public' place (like borders, starbucks, etc). I don't really see how we could have a good meet, have people present ideas, etc, in a situation like that.

I'd prefer we wait until we have somewhere such as a conference room, classroom, lobby of a place, etc, before we set a meet date.

What's everyone else think of this 'public' vs. 'private' location thought?

I agree. And I can also get

mccord42's picture

I agree. And I can also get us a room at the Rochester Hills Public Library. They have a Conference Room that can accommodate up to 20 people and they have free wifi. If no one objects, I will try tomorrow to reserve the second monday of next month (Sept. 8, 2008) and let everyone know if I get that date.

I'm down

mfer's picture

I'm down with that. Does it cost to get the conference room? That was a problem when I looked into the Farmington Hills library.

I'm wondering if that's a little north for some people. Thoughts?

No charge if someone who

mccord42's picture

No charge if someone who lives or works in Rochester/Rochester Hills makes the reservation. I was able to get the room from 5PM-9PM on Sept 8th, 2008. Nothice that this is the SECOND Monday in Sept. Since the first Monday is Labor Day and the library is closed.

The Rochester Hills Public Library is located at 500 Olde Town, Rochester MI, 48307. Just east of Rochester Rd. Just north of University.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=400+Olde+Town,+Rocheste...

I put the wrong address in the map because google doesn't put the place marker in the correct location for the correct address.

I can cancel this reservation at any time if something better is found, but now at least we have a set location for at least one meeting.

Location...

g-mamablue's picture

RH Library is fine for me, but I can imagine that is far for some others. I can try to get space at Automation Alley's office in Troy, Big Beaver between Rochester Road and Livernois. That would be free. If you say, "yeah," I'll try it.

I created a facebook event

Can I ask a few questions

mccord42's picture

Can I ask a few questions about this Facebook group/event? Some of us are not part of Facebook. I have no intention of joining. What is the point of creating another group on another web site when this one seems to be working fine? Why duplicate effort and split up the information in places not all of us can access it?

It was never my intention to

connectedgeek's picture

It was never my intention to offend anyone... I created the Facebook event due to the fact that more people subscribe to Facebook than to this forum. I did not know that Drupal had an "Attendees" (http://groups.drupal.org/node/14145/attendees) module. The Facebook Event "module" has a nice interface for creating these types of events. It has a comments area, links area, photo area, video area and stuff like that. I know Drupal can do all of that; however, I was naive that Drupal could handle it all. I still plan on keeping the Facebook Event "module"... in case others would like to participate in the that area too. Once again @mccord42, I am sorry for stepping on your toes.

Events everywhere

mfer's picture

Can you point your event back to the event post?

Posting this event everywhere would be a good thing. Once we are solid on the dates and place I'm going to post it all over the place in an effort to get the word out. Posting elsewhere can be a good thing to build up participation.

Not that I want to cause even more confusion...

micahw156's picture

Not trying to cause more confusion, but now that an actual event has been scheduled (as it seems it has) why not add an event and let this thread die a natural death? The event node could also be crossposted to the Michigan and Ann Arbor groups for greater audience. ConnectedGeek can change his link to the event node here once it's up.

All that to say I'll have to post my regrets, as I'll be gone that week. Hopefully it'll work out better for me next time!

Micah

EDIT: Whoops, my bad. Didn't notice the event had already been created. http://groups.drupal.org/node/14145

I'm not offended. :) I just

mccord42's picture

I'm not offended. :)

I just would hate to see the community split up and spread out before we even begin. I know that I am in the minority in my dislike of both Facebook and MySpace, but I just don't feel comfortable with some of the privacy issues that have occurred with both of them.

I also don't want people to feel that I am trying to take control of this group. That is definitely not MY intention and I apologize if my last post sounded like I was.

I am just a Drupal newbie hoping to find some more people with similar interest to discuss issues and other things.

Within the Facebook Event, I

connectedgeek's picture

Within the Facebook Event, I created a link back to this post (http://groups.drupal.org/node/14145). I cannot redirect it back; however, there is a link directly back to here (http://groups.drupal.org/node/14145).

Sorry for the confusion.

Good Idea, Actually

micahw156's picture

I think this was a good idea. Like mfer said, it's good to post the info as many places as possible. Having something in the Facebook group linking back to the event node here on g.d.o. can only help, as long as the primary source of info for an event is here.

I've noticed that with all of the activity lately, there is a steady stream of new faces in the "Recently joined" block here. Pointing people from other sites back to this group can only help it grow. It was a long time before I even looked at g.d.o., and it's only been recently that I'm really using it as a regular stop. Like any other groups-based site, we need steady activity combined with promotion for it to grow.

4 hours? What will be

4 hours? What will be discussed? Also 5pm seems a little early doesn't it? I tend to work till at least 5pm.
