The issue of a need for Drupal Training in London came up a number of times in the recent Drupal for NGOs event... I wondered what people's thoughts were about this... Are you a London-based organisation with a specific set of Drupal training requirements? Or are you a Drupal expert interested in providing training?

Hmm
I thought dimida was posting feature requests. ;-)
Modules
I think there's scope for a training collective of Drupal experts. Ronald Ashri (Istos) and I have been talking about the best way to set this up.
I went to one of Lullabot's
I went to one of Lullabot's courses in Canada, it was really useful.
Lullabot are excellent
Lullabot are really good - clearly experts and a nice bunch of people. We've had the good fortune to work with them on a British Council web site we did.
Would be good to gather together all the Drupal expertise in London and start to provide training to various organisations that want/need it like NGOs, Enterprises, Music companies, central government, councils etc.
If I were to look into setting this up would people in London (both potential trainers and trainees) be interested?
Trainer
To be honest, I already teach Drupal for NobleProg (Marie posted up there) and do quite a lot through them. I'm not sure they'd be too happy if I started teaching for other people.
Otherwise I would be interested. And I know NobleProg are always interested to hear from new trainers. They probably can't wait to be rid of me! ;-)
I'd be interested!
Yeah I'd be interested. I've been working for a company for 3 months with no Drupal training and I'm the only person that works on the site!
Drupal experts in London
I'm sure there's more than one way to bring Drupal experts together with people who need the training... without treading on toes... I'm sure Nobleprog do a good job...
Having been to a couple of Drupal UK meetings already it's clear that there are alot of expert Drupallers in London...! And I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg...
I would be happy so share my
I would be happy so share my Drupal knowledge.
Yeh Lullabots are great guys (and gals - add1son, webchick, & lizak), trying to keep in contact, hoping to goto their Do it with Drupal seminar in New Orleans, Just gotta prove to my employer it's worth it.
Not deliberately...
... but I also happen to organise Drupal expert get-togethers. We last met for a curry on Brick Lane about a month ago - I will be doing more. =)
Nothing official - just a list I keep of people I've worked with who have a professional interest in Drupal.
drupal syllabus?
I too am always happy to share my Drupal knowledge. I know from my previous experiences teaching PHP and MySQL at Sheffield University that the key to successful course is in planning and researching an effective syllabus. Everyone's needs and prior experience will differ so it's always hard to create a course that caters for everyone. What kind of training is required?
User/Admin Training: Building Drupal sites for clients inevitably involves some degree of training to show them how to administer their own sites. In this case training is to some degree specific to the actual client. What a user can and can't do on a site is likely to be different depending on how it has been configured.
Developer Training: I hear that the stumbling block for novice Drupalers is module selection. So some guidance on effective selection and use of modules would useful? It would be difficult to train someone on every possible combination of things you can do with Drupal APIs, so perhaps guidance in creating modules for specific use-cases would be useful?
So going back to the original question, it would be good to start with requirements from organisations using Drupal.
Very good point
Hi Darren
That's a very good point. The different levels of Drupal training required is definitely a key issue.
I think we'll need to get some feedback from a number of potential "trainees" on their requirements to narrow down the topics to cover.
I'll also have a chat with a number of people at this end.
See you at the Enterprise event next week no doubt...?
Thanks
Leon

Training Session from Drupalcon
There was a presentation at Drupalcon Szeged about Training and Certification. Although this session didn't touch on certification, there was some discussion about creating an open syllabus. You can watch the session online if you missed it:

There's also a group:

Good stuff
That's great - thanks Darren.
What about custom training?
One of the main issues is that people have different needs and abilities as already mentioned. This means that people have different requirements from training. If curriculum items were split and trainees could choose a set of items they would like to be given training on, training days could be built so that people with the same needs could attend the same training day.
I for one don't want to sit through 'how to create content', 'how to install modules' etc. when I'm only after training on a small set of specific areas.
Sounds a bit complicated, but it's an idea.
