Newbie Hint: Drupal 5 or Drupal 6?
Marami na ang nagtatanong sa akin kung aling Drupal version ang dapat gamitin nila upang makapagsimula ng kanilang Drupal experience.
Mahigit sa 18-katao na ang nag-iinquire sakin through personal e-mail and calls (I'm really flattered & happy to be of service... however there's also Drupal IRC, handbook, and Google :P).
Ang katanungan? Drupal 5 or Drupal 6... alin ang dapat piliin?

So in order to save time, I created a guide on my blog that you may find helpful.
Please don't be afraid to comment. I noticed that some are afraid that I'll get back at them or think that others will pity them if they don't understand what's in front. This way, it will help me (and other bloggers) to know how satisfying the content is. Whether it's a good/bad comment, leave the worrying to the writer.

using 6
I started using 6 on one of the sites I am building. I am stuck now. Not all the modules I need have been ported. Most needed modules, cck, view have been ported. I think there are still other issues such as file upload, etc.
Use second to the last version
In my experience, it is best to choose the most stable version, and that is the the second to the last version. You're assured that the most of the modules have been ported, and that most of the bugs have been fixed.
Then once the latest version has been released and the version you're using is thus no longer supported, then you can upgrade to the next version, e.g. if you're using version 5 and then version 7 is released, then you can already switch to version 6.
arrgggghhhh.... napakahirap
arrgggghhhh....
napakahirap ng tanong mo....
the bottom line, it's all about the features. if D6 can provide the features you need, go for it, if not, D5 will work just fine.

Its true that not all highly
Its true that not all highly preferred modules have been ported to 6.x, but still 6.x is more convinient to use, more secure and more complecated to develop for(!). Modules developed this way, would be more secure then thier counterparts, if any, in 5.x.
And as per my experience, I would suggest to use 6.2 if you prefer to use 6.x.

its true D6 is comfortable
its true D6 is comfortable to use..or should i say more user friendly compare to D5.. which is easy for newbies..(jquery done a great job.. hehe!).. but for now D5 has a lot of stable modules you can choose from... especially CKK + Views, or if you want a image gallery site, there's image field for D5.. so it really depends on want kind of site you want to do.. both are good stuff... its just the availability of some modules that you might want to use... ^__-... so for newbies.. hope this can help.. and don't forget.. there's the documentation...its really straight forward.. and don't hesitate to ask marc.robinsone.. ayos ba tol? hehehe.. ingat kayu jan mga drupalista.. rock on!
The main sticking point
The main sticking point really is the number of modules that don't have a stable release for D6 yet. CCK + Views + Panels are near essential for a lot of projects. D6's usability improvements are very nice though, I can't wait to move to it once most modules have a stable 6.x release (by then we'll probably be drooling at D7, heh).
candid memories
Ah yes, finding true love and passion for Drupal leaves everyone breathless --at first.
I remember my first encounter with Drupal.
There I was visiting http://drupal.org for the first time. So, I pressed "/" ('slash key' is shortcut for search in Firefox) and typed the keyword "download". As I hit the enter key, there was a significant feeling of despair. The reason: Drupal 4.7 and Drupal 5.1
What came to my mind is: "Oh no. No one told which to download". And I also assumed that it is possible to upgrade/downgrade anytime I want with this software (I'm not familiar with CVS back then and I was a Microsoft baby).
What did I do next? I totally forgot :-P Dang it. All I remember is that I've had so much to do in so little time that I hardly even slept. I invested too much time playing with Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Plone, Typo3, Xoops, etc. and weighing which of the candidates would most eventually be my new best friend. I only confirmed after two weeks after I had a love-hate relationship with Wordpress and Plone. Really, it's like participating in a blind date. And what do we do after a date? Not that! ...you incredibly creative thinker! We sleep. Kala mo ha hehehe.
But in those candid memories and awful first encounters comes a software with a funny name and a cartoonish-looking logo. I confirmed that I felt the need to do more digging before downloading anything ---> and yes -- that's confusion.
Buti nalang meron nang Wikipedia.org. It saved me time to research everything about this software. Back then, I used Wamp5 server, then Apache2triad, then XAMPP, and the list goes on. In those time of pressure and still being nut-headed... I realized how caring my best friend named "Google" is.
What's the Relevance? Well, it may not sound too analogous but I think it's happening again. Newbies are getting that some ol' feeling of finding out if Drupal is their perfect match --regardless of the version.
In reality, it must really be the software requirements. But to most, it's the love. Yes. The love. lol.
And yes skimmerboi, ayos lang magtanong. Basta hindi personal o kaya naman ay hindi masasagot haha.
One time kasi may nagtanong sakin, "Marc. Nasan yung .exe file dun sa Drupal?". Siyempre pa, tawa ako ng tawa. Sa ulirat lang naman. Sabi ko nalang, "Hanapin mo lang nandun lang yun". Hahaha. Kawawang mama.
On a more serious tone, Drupal 6 is ready to rock and roll. With the number of modules ported and plenty of rather controversial issues surrounding the Drupal community (ehem)... it only implies that the software is alive with the community.
Peace everyone. Peace.
sigh...
if only 6 had all the modules, I'd definitely use it. that's the only thing preventing me from taking it on.
maybe I'll start all my next sites on 6 for all 09 projects. by that time, all modules I need must have already been ported. :D

the decision
For me, the decision really depends on the availability of the modules to be used on the site. For now, not all modules are upgraded into Drupal 6. But we must remember that what we have learned from Drupal 5 is applicable to Drupal 6 as well. There is always documentation outlining for the changes.
