Hi everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself as a new Drupal developer in the area. New to Drupal, not to the area that is. I live in Gainesville, Florida and have done so since I was born. I've been involved in web design in one form or another for the last 6 or 7 years. I've been focusing more heavily on PHP and a little Javascript in the last year and then discovered Drupal about a month ago.

My wife Amy and I work together at our church, Dove World Outreach Center, full time, and have started a web design business on the side to be able to support ourselves (along with a baby due in February.) We have a couple of sites behind us plus a somewhat convoluted inventory management and DB driven HTML generator written in PHP for an eBay furniture business we run out of our church. The code's not pretty, but I was quite happy with the results. After that experience, I've become very excited about a lot of the things I've read about Drupal and how the whole community operates. I tried to implement some of the stuff that's been perfected in Drupal and well, I'm happy if I don't have to attempt that from scratch again.

I look forward to doing what I can in the community, especially once I get a feel for the whole system a little better.

I saw a post a little while back that Gainesville meet-ups don't tend to get off the ground. Any other developers in Gainesville?

Anyway, I look forward to hearing back from the rest of you in the group.

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. The Florida group is unofficially split up a bit due to geography, and I'm not aware of any Gainesville-specific events. I can tell you that we central Florida people are quite active and have monthly meetups in Orlando. You can check out the notes from our latest meetup - it includes future meetups as well as some initial work we're doing to have a day-long Drupalcamp in the next few months.

Hi Mike,

Thanks, it's good to hear from you. So there's really no one else in the Gainesville area? That's a shame. I work on Saturdays so it would be tough for me to make it down to one of the Orlando meetups. Who knows though, maybe sometime it'll work out.

I'm sure there's a few people in the Florida Group from Gainesville, here's one guy:

Dave,

I know I have met plenty of geeks from the swamp - the first Florida Drupal meetings were actually dubbed "Drupal Gators", I think. This was over a year ago, but I'm pretty sure Joe and Steve were involved even at that point.

I know that several attendees of the last two BarCampOrlando events were from your part of the state - I'd check the mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/barcamporlando

There is also a non-active group set up for Gainesville (waiting for someone to take hold) over at Florida Creatives - http://floridacreatives.com/group/gainesville - right now all that exists there are a few placeholder pages on the wiki. I'm sure there are folks out there, and these tools might help you find them.

Thanks Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the tips. I've signed up at the floridacreatives site but haven't had much time to look around yet. As soon as I have a few more spare minutes I'll check out barcamp as well.
