TriDUG Logo Explorations

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
timswezy's picture

At the last TriDUG meeting, I volunteered to create a logo for the group to use for branding, event signage etc. I was to present tonight at the meeting at Hesketh, but a family obligation (I'm now an uncle!) has prevented me from doing so. Attached are three possibilities for the logo with some possible extensions. Also please reference the attached explanatory document which covers what I would have said during the presentation.

Once a choice has been made, a final version will be drawn up. I'm hoping that the TriDUG logo will make it's debut at CityCamp Raleigh if we become involved or another future event.

Finally please post your feedback as comments to this post so we can keep everything organized and out in the open.

Thank you to everyone at TriDUG for this opportunity, for your help, and for your feedback.

Tim, This is a great start,

Tim,

This is a great start, thanks for taking a stab at giving the TriDUG some visual identity. It's so much easier to react to several different concepts than to just talk about it.

We shared this at last nights meeting, but we didn't have much discussion. I encouraged folks to provide feedback here so that everyone could see it.

I like the concepts on page 3. My favorite is the upper-left one that has the druaplicon and Triangle Drupal User Group. Personally, I'd like to see a few iterations on that concept to see what might be different there. A few thoughts:
- perhaps a Triangle that's representative of the region (Ral-Dur-CH)
- a Drupalicon with ram horns, a wolk's mouth, and a devil's tail - just kinnding, but thatmight be funny
- I like the TriDUG and the font that you used, maybe combo the "triangle" with the logotype
- I mentioned last night how I liked the Boone DrupalCamp logo, it's a yellow drupalicon with a Daniel Boone / hunter's cap. I wonder if there is something like that we could do to keep it simple
-- I know Raleigh is the city of oaks, is there something like this for the Triangle? innovation, technology?
- maybe try 3 drupalicons and find a way to "bring them together"

These are just a few of my thoughts, I hope they give you some direction and I hope others chime in as well.
Jason

I'll take the above into

timswezy's picture

I'll take the above into consideration for the next phase. The hardest part was definitely trying to come up with a symbol that summarizes the Triangle. I still feel new to the area and the suggestions you gave are very helpful towards bringing some resolution. Thanks!

A Ral-Dur-CH triangle

hallman's picture

We used to use a triangle that represents Ral-Dur-CH in the RTPnet website. It's at http://www.ibiblio.org/rtpnet/archives/rtpnet2005/triangle.gif

What about taking the red out, put TriDUG in the triangle, and then put the whole thing in the Drupal droplet.

I think it's a bit too Raleigh centric

timswezy's picture

I had an idea like this, but thought it would be too Raleigh centric. In my next revision, I'll try to make something that incorporates the whole Triangle visually. I think there might be room in the future for localizations for Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, etc. Thanks for the response!

FYI, two years ago I had a set of graphic design interns working on a triDUG logo, and we went over their contributions at one of the monthly meetings and no one could agree on anything :p

They had some really good ideas. If you'd like to get the vector files for their work, just let me know.

I'm not surprised that this

I'm not surprised that this has happened before. I'm pretty new to the group, Drupal, and the area, so more suggestions are welcome.

I'd love to take a closer look at the files for reference and to see what's gone on before. I'm partnering with Jason Hibbets (jhibbets) on this project, so please copy him as well:

jhibbets@redhat.com

I'm going to do a bit more research into the area and its history for some further inspiration. I think between that, yours, and the other suggestions we'll hopefully be able to agree on something. :) Or maybe the organizers can just declare it by fiat.

Better yet, I uploaded the

My 5 minutes worth

Just a logo with 5 minutes of effort behind it... maybe it will generate some more artistic efforts....

To add to the confusion

The one in the middle looks

The one in the middle looks like it is being rained on.

That's right

fchandler's picture

All the triangle Drupaler's raining down and filling up the Triangle. Just an idea.

Let's wrap it up…

If we can finish off further comments or suggestions by the end of the day today, I think I'll have a good base to start the next revision from. Thanks again to everyone for their help and suggestions!

I can't draw worth a crap, but my idea would be a riff on the viking, give him a goatee and reinforce the triangle motif, looking a bit devilish tho... please excuse the horrible amateurish art

Why a viking?

Just curious.

No worries.

I understand now. Thanks.

I like the idea of a

aaronaverill's picture

I like the idea of a "mascot", or a "creature", rather than an abstract symbol, or even something literal such as spelling the words out. I think the branding is a lot more powerful (recognizable, unique, memorable), and it really fits well with the existing spirit of the blue droplet dude.

So you could go the route of a bastardized offspring of the drupalicon, using the same face, or the same color or shape.

Or go some unique route, and incorporate the droplet dude - maybe the mascot is wearing a drupal shirt, or maybe he's holding the droplet in his hands, or something like that.

Some random ideas:
* A carolina pig (like Stormy)
* A red cardinal (riff off the twitter icon maybe?)
* A squirrel (the state Mammal... really, I'm serious!)
* A wolf-ram-devil (kinda like a university version of man-bear-pig)
* Some human character - the three drupal druids, or some nonsense.

I realize of course, this is a TON more work. Ahh, thats your problem not mine ;)

Some inspiration ! http://www.schmoozyfox.com/2010/11/29/brand-mascots/

Here is a state symbol

How about the state seashell the Scotch bonnet

How does one paste an image in the posts? Doh! Thanks Steve.

Great ideas!

I think I'll definitely try out a mascot-y approach for part of Round 2. You have some great suggestions there, and that's a great link. Thanks!

Good looking logos

paulthed's picture

Tim,

Thanks for putting this together. I really like your first logo and the one with the triangle druplicon. I think having the druplicon in the logo is important as it is easily recognizable by anyone in the Drupal community.

I'm still pretty new to the area, so I don't really have any good ideas on how to make it more "local" other than the ideas that were mentioned above.
