Over the past few months we've been working away behind the scenes on the Drupal Design site prototype. There are quite a number of technical considerations when building a new drupal.org sub-site so these needed to be ironed out before we could really show this off.
I've posted a number of screen grabs to Notable and we can use these to collect comments and feedback on the various screens throughout the site - you can leave general comments here but if you're wanting to leave comments about the actual screens please post those to Notable.
Mostly we're looking for user reviews - thinking about the features, site structure, layout, style, UX/usability, accessibility and stuff like that. You might run into a technical hitch occasionally (e.g. I have noticed some cache issues when first logging in) - we're less interested in those sorts of things, however if you get a wsod please tell me about it!
The live testing site was recently moved to the Acquia Dev Cloud, the URL is at the end of this post.
Notable Screen-grabs for Comments and Reviews
Homepage
The homepage should allow the user to quickly figure out what the site is about and where they can go next - we have not stacked a whole lot of content into the homepage, preferring to use it as a landing page that springboards users into more relevant sections.

Challenges
Something you might want to do here is add a design to a challenge, any sample picture will do. Also, does the flow of screens make sense, how might we improve this, is the design pleasing and usable.

Assets
You can try adding a design asset also. I'm wondering if we show more or less meta data on each of the teasers in the grid views. The user badges will likely be replaced with images, or a more design that better differentiates them from taxonomy terms.
Discussions
Is it easy to post a new discussion?
Live Development Site
You can login to the development site and look around, upload some images and post comments etc. I encourage you to actually use the site and get a feel for it. Please post your feedback to the Notable pages linked to above, and not in comments on the actual site (since they will get nuked, expect anything you add to the dev site to disappear at any time).

Keep in the mind the site is a development prototype so if you run into any "technical hitches" such as a persistent screen (cache not clearning) or other such things this is less concerning to us right now - what we're really looking at is the IA and UX.
Let us know if you think something pretty obvious is missing, or if you think we should take something away. My personal vision is that the site would be pretty simple and easy to use.
Note that most forms in the site are not themed, so the node forms are a bit messy and need work.

This feels like its trying to achieve the same goals as http://groups.drupal.org/prairie-initiative. Are the two projects talking to each other?

Well, there hasn't been a tremendous amount of discussion on that front because of timing - that said I rather see d.d.o as falling under the broad umbrella of Prairie since its part of the d.o ecosystems of sub-sites. Prairie is a community initiative and is not time bound - so changes could, and probably will, take years (small improvement like issue summaries we might see by the end of this year I hope), but things like topic pages - well who knows when we will see those appear in d.o. We don't have that luxury - we need to bootstrap asap and get this junket rolling.
I see the Prairie as large,
I see the Prairie as large, community-driven improvements to drupal.org whereas d.d.o is a new community for designers working on Drupal core theme and other design efforts?
http://groups.drupal.org/drupalorg-improvements is the group where I'm focusing efforts in improving d.o. content/communication/IA and other low hanging fruit etc.
Indeed, there's some overlap, but as long as we make our group missions clear, it shouldn't result in much, if any crossposting.

I tried to post a few thoughts on the notable screenshots earlier, it's requiring a user/pass combi... is this available?

Looking at the prototypes
Looking at the design.drupal.org homepage and the other landing page prototypes you posted (Design challenges a.s.o.):
If I see these from a designer's eye they need much more design. Especially a lot more images. This would mean stretching the d.o. CI to its limits what it can do beyond pure text. Care needs to be taken of course not to break the CI. But Mark has already shown how this could work https://infrastructure.drupal.org/drupal.org-style-guide/prototype/dashb... (also with double the image-type content it would not break the layout).
Maybe we can have a design challenge for those pages?
Life is a journey, not a destination
Are you still working on this?
Hi, Jeff -
Seems like a good idea. But also one of those things that could easily fall below a "most important priority" bar....
Not that I can help much, but I'm curious if you are still poking around with this. ?
