What modules are required for a Drupal 4.7.4 web site running OG2List and what is the script?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hello! I'm using Drupal 4.7.4 and I'd like to install Organic Groups 4.7.0 and OG2List 4.7.0. on a DreamHost shared server running LAMP.

Are the "Required Modules" and "Demo Script", found at Site walkthrough for a OG2List site and which were written for Drupal 4.6.x, still valid for Drupal 4.7.4? Or does the "Site walkthrough" need updating from Drupal 4.6.x to Drupal 4.7.x?

Also, the last sentence of the Organic groups list manager module description states, in italics, "This module is currently undergoing a lot of tests. It will only be usable to you if you run your own server or have extended admin privileges." Like I mentioned above, I'm on a DreamHost shared server. Does anyone know if I'll have problems with this module since I don't run my own server? What "extended admin privileges" will I need?

Thank you in advance!

A while ago (months) I had og2list setup on my server with multiple drupal installations.
I didnt work out sharing across multiple drupals or sharing an email server with my main email server... but they said that they would be working to make that doable...
I wonder if these issues have been fixed?
I still really want og2list and it looks like its about to get even more developers pumping it up into a google groups killer...

whats going on?
thanks,
ryan.

You need your own server

This won't work on a shared server, unless you have very advanced mail configuration skills.

We are continuing to work on making it work for more advanced configurations. We are bound by funding for the project.

Any workaround(s)?

Amazon, thanks for the helpful reply.

I do not have "advanced" mail configuration skills and am disappointed I need to be on my own server to properly run og2list. Are there any workaround(s) in lieu of not being able to use og2list since I'm on a DreamHost shared server?

I noticed in Bounty for og2list and mass mail improvements - Post Carbon Institute that mention was made about Mass Mailer never having made it over the 4.7 hump. Would a partial workaround (to using og2list and since Mass Mailer is not an option for 4.7) be to use Mailman as an external solution? I looked into phpList but it's a one-way email announcement delivery system and, although great for newsletters, publicity lists, notifications, and many other uses, list members can't reply since it's one-way.

It sounds to me that if I use Mailman, it would be an inferior solution (to og2list and/or Mass Mailer) due to Mailman subscribers having to register separately from whichever organic groups they're subscribed to. But at least, I believe, I could set up each organic group with its own Mailman mailing list. It would be slightly cumbersome having to manually set up each Mailman mailing list after individuals create organic groups on the fly, but I believe it's doable as a partial workaround. I would need to monitor any new organic groups after the fact and then create respective Mailman mailing lists. It sounds like Mailman Manager would help me set things up with this approach. Do you know if I would need a separate database from Drupal for the Mailman workaround? I believe I would.

Does my logic make sense or am I way off on my thinking?

What about CiviCRM and CiviMail? The CiviMail description states, "CiviMail is a robust mass-mailing component which allows you to engage your constituents with personalized email blasts and newsletters." Is CiviMail a one-way process, similar to phpList, in which list members can't reply? Does CiviMail, like og2list, require me to have my own server or "advanced" mail configuration skills?

Any feedback and optional workarounds to og2list and Mass Mailer will be greatly appreciated & thanks in advance!!!

if you don't mind me asking, what would be the nature of the skills/configurations required?

thanks, Neil.

Please read the appropriate install documents

shared server

Hi Amazon

Thanks, but they won't mean anything to me. So I guess my question is if someone of the advanced mail skills you mentioned reads them, could they make OG2List operate in a shared server environment?

Thanks, neil.

That's the 64, 000 dollar question

The problem is you have to be an expert enough to know what your hosting provider will allow you to do with your MTA. Two people might have very different skill levels but one of their hosts allows them to change configurations and the other is a guru but doesn't have permission to configure their MTA.

So the answer is that we have put dozens and dozens of hours into producing installation documentation. If you can't make sense of the installation instructions then no you can't install in a shared hosting environment. If you can make sense of the installation instructions, then you have the skills to evaluate whether your hosting provider will let you change your MTA's configuration to successfully install OG list manager.

To my knowledge, no one has successfully installed OG list manager in a shared hosting environment. However, if you could make the appropriate changes to your MTA configuration in a shared environment, then yes, you could run it successfully.

For postfix the key questions to ask your hosting provider. Can you add a relay_domain and a transport _map to the main postfix configuration file?

ok

So the key is a hosting provider that allows this configuration applied to the MTA, which I'm guessing some will be quite sensitive about given its a shared service etc., and someone comfortable with laying OG2List on top of this.

ok cool, I'm sure your documentation will be immensely useful. Many thanks for your helpful advice,

Regards, Neil.
