i'd be happy to test but i can't install the gigabyte worth of Apple Developer tools to access the CVS repository. is there another way to get the HEAD?

CVS - worth the effort

In general, it's really useful to have some way of accessing CVS
repositories, and in the long run, it will make your life as a Drupal
admin much easier. You might want to try these programs instead of the
developer tools:
http://www.mozilla.org/catalog/development/tools/cvs-macosx.html

As for the buddylist, there is no HEAD. In fact, ever since the switch
to the new project management tools on Drupal.org, the versions and
tagging on the buddylist have been totally broken, and I haven't had the
chance to clean them up. It's one of my big goals for this week, though,
so at that point, you'll be able to download a development branch
tarball, as well as a DRUPAL-5 release.

got it. thanks robert!
