Irish Drupal Meet-up

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi All,

This has been discussed a few times, but its about time we had an Irish Drupal meet up.

ITS HAPPENING -- see

http://groups.drupal.org/node/2127

The idea behind a meet-up is to exhange ideas and experiences, and build up a local network of support.

I guess we should have the first one in Dublin, where most people can get to easily.

I'm based in Galway myself, so can anybody organise something in Dublin?

We have an offer from Jonnie from mailfriends.com to present something about their site.
Something for everybody to learn there..

So if pople can offer a venue/ suggest a venue, and we'll go from there.

A Saturday morning would suit me best, but we'll see what the consensus is.

Who's up for it.. ?

Depending on the date/time

Depending on the date/time I'd be very interested in this :)

Yeh its a great idea,

Guess we should get a venue I havent been in Dublin in a while so i dont know the layout as well as i use to but if it was a small get together augier st in town might suit as I know they have an open(relatively) WiFi connection in DIT there

might not be ideal if the group was more than 10 or so

any one got any suggestions

Hmmm.. not quite the

Hmmm.. not quite the response I was hoping for:-)

I'd be happy to organise something in Galway, if enough people were willing to come down here.

I can't really do anything about organising in Dublin.

How about a Drupal v5 tour and install/configure session?

vjordan's picture

Alan & dublin drupal friends,

How about we arrange a session on the V5 release of Drupal? If there's beginners coming along a hands-on session bringing a 4.x site into a V5 environment could be useful. I've done this a few times with a couple of sites I manage just to get familiar with the process in advance of the RC coming. I know Alan's done it a whole lot more than I have. We could share some knowledge in this area, and give hands-on support for folk who haven't gone down that road just yet. If the attendance is more advanced we could work up a topics list that is appropriately engaging. Things I'm interested in:

  • Views
  • Statistics / activity reporting
  • V5 themes and interesting exemplars
  • Multi-site management best practices with V5

Given our present temporal proximity to Christmas I suggest we set the date for early January (6th / 13th) and arrange the session a few minutes after the first train gets in from Dublin (9:47, so a 10am start could work). We could arrange some place that has WiFi, or possibly we could rent a few stations in one of the internet cafes, depending on numbers.

Thoughts on topics or logistics anybody?

Sounds Like a Plan

alanburke's picture

Hi Vincent,

Great Ideas for the Drupal Meet up.

Maybe we should wait for Drupla 5.0 to be released, or least a RC, and then look to set a date based on that.

As regards a Venue, I'm waiting for some suggestions from Dublin based People.
I wouldn't have a clue.

I think we might have to approach some people via their contact tabs directly and see if they are keen on this meet-up.

The silence has been deafening :-)

Waiting for a v5 RC sounds

vjordan's picture

Waiting for a v5 RC sounds sensible. Early notice is always good though.

If we host the event in Galway (my intention above - 9:47 is the time the first train from Heuston gets into Galway) I reckon I'll be able to organise a venue as suggested.

Galway as a starter ?

scor's picture

I'm based in Galway and I'm up for any drupal event here. I would also go to Dublin if there was an event there. So far it seems like Galway would suit more, since dubliners remain pretty quiet... we might be able to enrole more people in this group by contacting a few active irish drupal.org members, or posting on drupal forum.
Steph.

fair play to ya Alan.

I'm easy for both Dublin and Galway.

Lets set a date

alanburke's picture

Hi all,

Now that a RC has been released, I think we can safely start planning this meet-up.

I'm thinking some Saturday Morning in January/February.

How does Saturday January 13th sound?

Failing that, I'm not back in Galway till February 10th?

It will be somewhere in Galway, but will start late enough to allow the first train and Bus from Dublin to get in.

If there is even 3 people happy with that date, It would be enough.

I imagine this will be in the style of Barcamp, where everybody is asked to present something aout their work with Drupal, regardless of their Drupal experience level.

Once we have enough people and a venue secured, we'll start spreading the word wider.

ok

scor's picture

Thanks Alan for suggesting a date. I'll be back from Toronto on the 9th, so 13th of january sounds good. I should also be available on the 10th of february.

Galway 13th January is good

vjordan's picture

I suggest a start time of 10am if it's only Galway folk. If we have some travellers from Dublin we can slip this by 15mins to give them a chance to get in on the train/bus. I can bring a projector. I will have a laptop, but I guess everybody will have their own.

Venue Options

We need to fix a venue. If there's going to be half a dozen or less of us I'm happy to host it in my house: wi-fi, coffee available and not far from a bus stop.

If we're looking at a bigger group we'll need to source an alternative. Possibilities are:

  • GMIT - I think they have open access wifi, but we could check it out.
  • NUIG - I know a guy working here and he might be able to fix us up with a location.
  • others? Please post in this thread if you can offer a venue.

So if you're interested in attending this meet-up post here asap and we'll get a sense of numbers. If we're 6 or under on 6 Jan then we'll do my house. Otherwise we'll go hunt for a bigger location.

Topics

I've been experimenting with v5 RC1 in a multi-site environment and would be happy to discuss that configuration. By then I also expect to have done a trial upgrade or two from v4.7 to V5.

I'm interested in seeing more about the Views module.

What else might we be able to cover? What else would you like to have covered? Once again, post your idea here.
