What SHARED hosts can support og2list?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This post is related to What hosts can support og2list? found at drupal.org and to Any workaround(s)? found here at groups.drupal.org.

In general, what known SHARED hosts can support og2list?

Also, and more specifically, has anyone succeeded in running og2list on a SHARED server at DreamHost.com? If YES, I'm interested in knowing how you did it and could use your help in trying to get it running.

Thanks in advance!

any progress?

Hi Walt/all

Any progress with identifying 'OG2List friendly' hosts? In general does any one know of a hoster who does a bit more specialised Drupal hosting? Ie not just vanilla, but will install extra modules, cater for specific configs like this?

Thanks, Neil.

Not yet, but hopeful! :)

Hi Neil,

There haven't been any answers posted, but I'm an optimist... :)

Hi,

We run shared and managed Drupal 4.7 and 5.1 platforms for a few dozen clients, mostly from the cultural and non-profit sector.
(managed means here that we continually update the code, find new modules and install them, run daily backups, etc.)

For one client with multiple sites I have now successfully installed og2list on 4.7

We offer large storage and plenty bandwidth.

Companies and organisations interested in og2list mail2web and web2mail integration can contact us.

I agree it is a very very promising technology. In a lot of (non-tech) environments it is a nuisance for users to both have a site account, and a mailman account. This can make life so much easier!

We're based in the Netherlands, our servers are with KPN/XS4ALL.

what do i ask my host?

I am trying to find out if my host would be able to support og2list under a shared environment. I found out that they use Exim. What questions specifically should I ask them in order to determine if I can use og2list?

Exim on a shared host

Heyya

Shared hosts are not usually so hot on setting up og2list. We are using postfix, but i imagine its the same thing in exim. You would need to create transport rules that the MTA listens for mail to certain domains (like name@lists.yourdomain.tld) and calls the mail-in PERL script which will handle delivery to your drupal db.

you should ask them if they will let you set configuration for Exim for you own domains, and if you can get the PERL CPAN modules installed on the server which are listed in the INSTALL.txt.

Use the HEAD rev. This module is still under development, we are only now rolling it out to production on drupal 5 for relocalize.net
Watch for patches, we are still trying to get atomic patches into CVS
Follow our newly created http://groups.drupal.org/og2list-developers for roadmaps and upcoming functionality.

Thanks for the info. I

Thanks for the info. I copied your message into a support ticket to my host where I've been asking them about getting og2list set up and here was their reply:

"We have a few of those modules installed, but I'm not too sure how they expect us to setup Exim for your domain. As far as I know, Exim is configured automatically with the creation of each email address.

Also, you could use a cron that checks the email within an account (similar to how helpdesks do it, by running a cron every 2-5 minutes)."

What should I tell them next? I took a look at the install file for using og2list with exim, but the info is over my head. I don't know anything about Perl or Exim.

Shared Hosts - Exim MTA behavior and configuration

mackh's picture

Hi

Good for you trying it at all.

Heres the thing, EXIM is a MTA (Mail Transport Agent) and the reason we need to configure the MTA is because there isn't actually an email account per list. The MTA directs traffic to the listening script, rather than storing the message in a mailbox, we store it directly in the drupal database.

The MTA, on receiving the message decides what to do with the current message. Usually it would want to deliver to a mail account and write the message into a file for that account. With some additional configuration to the (transport layer for postfix, or router and transport for Exim) of the MTA, we can deliver the message directly to the mail-in.pl component of og2list.

In the exim.INSTALL doc in the og2list module, there is configuration instructions for the Router and Transport functions of Exim
http://cvs.drupal.org/viewvc.py/drupal/contributions/modules/og2list/exi...

I think the best thing will be to pass on the configuration instructions to them directly, and try to get in touch with an admin who knows what you are talking about.

To recap

Ask them to install the CPAN modules
Ask them to follow the install instruction for exim
Ask them to set you up an account with the perl scripts and test that the perl scripts compile (ensuring the cpan modules are correctly installed).

og2list is difficult to configure, difficult to test. Its really handy to have access to the perl scripts, and be able to test that mail-in is getting the inbound messages. We are implementing against Postfix, so I am also not aware of specific issues with Exim, if you find issues, let us know and we'll try to get them fixed, or assigned to someone who will fix them.

Good luck, and reply to this post if you need more help

Thanks again. I passed your

Thanks again. I passed your message along to my host and here was the reply I got:

"I've tested this setting and it wouldn't be possible on a shared environment without causing problems with Exim/cPanel interaction. I've tested it thoroughly, including using settings that weren't recommended, and it refused to work without issues if there are many domains using mail on a server."

Doesn't sound good, but I'm still hopeful there might be some workaround.
