Fosdem 2009: Drupal Monk's Abbey Beers Saturday Night Social Event

On Saturday night February 7 (starting at 21:00) we will organize a social event for all the Drupalers that are in town. This will give you the chance to meet fellow-Drupalers and drink a kriek, gueuze, coffee, (abbey) beer or soda with them and talk football, cars, politics, beer and other essential things of life besides patching.

Although the exact plan is not clear yet we will probably look for a bar in the center of Brussels where we can use a part as a semi-private area for Drupalers. We'll try to find something that is easy to reach by public transport.

It will take place at the back~~office~~room of Café De Monk:

Only local images are allowed. We may have to adjust the scale of this event to the number of attendees so raise your hand (in the comments sections below) if you're attending.

This event is not the massive Fosdem beer event that takes place on Friday night February 6.

~~To avoid lengthy discussion about making it a smoking or non-smoking event: we will follow the rules of the bar. (smoking is allowed in Belgian bars but some bars have a non smoking policy).~~

Our private room is non-smoking but you can smoke in the bar (a typical Belgian compromise).

Needless to say but De Monk offers a nice selection of fine Belgian (abbey) beers!

Be prepared: there is no wireless internet, so you may have to engage in live, non-virtual human interaction.

I would just like to point out that since january 1st 2007, it is prohibited to smoke in places of which the main and permanent activities include the preparation and/or serving of food and/or drinks for consumption at the spot or to take with you unless there is a separated and properly ventilated area for people to smoke in.

there are however some exceptions but I doubt they would apply here.

also, do note that a lot of barkeepers tend to ignore these regulations and allow people to smoke anyway

I don't want to flame, but I think it's safe to assume that smoking won't be a problem. If people really want to smoke they are free so go outside for a moment to light a cigarette.

I am coming as long as we can go to the Classic Rock Bar!! Rockers & drupal have a history of making for good evenings (see my Flickr photos from DrupalCon Szeged).

You know it makes sense! It's central, cosy and the music policy is awesome.

Well, actually - Eric has better taste than that. We were all drinking Stella and Becks, because we drank the other two places dry. The third place ran out of everything and then they only had Stella and Becks left, so... beggars can't be choosers! :)

The bar is actually called "Rock Classic".

If you need any help with sorting stuff out, I have a friend in Brussels who is a well known Belgian rock promoter. He may be able to negotiate some sort of deal or booking or something, who knows.

Also, if I can find somewhere to sleep for the night that would be more than helpful... perhaps Fri/Sat?

nik, i have to disappoint you because it will not take place at the classic rock bar but in a bar called De Monk where we have a kind of semi-private drupal backroom.

this will not affect the beerflow, though.

if this bar closes (or if it runs out of beer, whichever happens first) we will, i promise, go to the classic rock bar

i hope that, despite the sad news, you'll still be able to join the festivities

I'd quite like to book some Eurostar tickets, but I don't have anywhere to sleep. I'd be looking for Saturday night at least. I don't know if there is a Drupal specific meetup on sunday night as well, or if everyone is going home that day after the sessions? Is it better to get there Friday and have a walk round and enjoy the party that night too? :)

Can anyone help out? I like beer, by the way... :)

We would be wise to think about implementing something similar to the beer distribution mentioned in that fosdem thread...

Previous experience of en masse Drupal beer ordering (we had some big old queues in Szeged!!) suggests it would be a good idea!
