Event type:
User group meeting

Our last event was such a huge success...let's have another one for 2009!

Want to meet other local Drupal users and use your Drupal skills to help a worthy cause? Please join us for Drupal Outreach Code Sprint Two!

What: One-day code sprint to build websites for local non-profit organizations in the Metro-Manila area.
Who: Anyone with Drupal experience
When: Saturday, April 4th, 2009 10am - 5pm (with a break for lunch)
Where: TechBar @ Exist Global, Unit 502, 5/F The Orient Square Bldg., F.Ortigas Jr. Rd. (formerly Emerald Avenue), Ortigas Centre, Pasig City 1605, Philippines (see map)
Why: To donate our time and skills to a great cause...while meeting cool Drupal folks!

Participation in this event is of course free, but please sign up so that we may get an accurate head count.

Tentative Schedule:
10:00 - 10:30 Welcome and Introductions
10:30 - 11:00 Non-profit's representative explains site requirements
11:00 - 11:30 Define site features and functionality
11:30 - 12:00 Breakout into groups
12:00 - 01:00 Lunch
01:00 - 04:00 Implement features and theme
04:00 - 04:45 Final testing, Bug-fixing
04:45 - 05:00 Wrap up.

Participants should bring their own laptop (with wifi capability) and an extension cord. Laptops should have the following software installed: Apache 2, PHP 5, MySQL 5, and an FTP client.

If you are unable to bring your own laptop, there will be opportunities to partner up with others, Xtreme Programming-style.

Also if anyone's interested, some of us will meet up after the Code Sprint (on another day) to train the non-profit on how to use and maintain their new website. More information on this follow-up event will be available at the Code Sprint.

In addition to signing up for this event, please send me your full name, so that your name can be added to the Visitors List for building security. Otherwise you will have to surrender your ID in order to enter the building.

When you arrive, please inform building security that you are going to "Exist Global". If you simply say "TechBar", the guards may give you a confused look. The "TechBar" is located within Exist's suite of offices and boardrooms.

This event is co-sponsored by the Computer Professional's Union and Pacific Software Architects.

UPDATE: We will be building sites for the following non-profit organizations:

  • AMIHAN - National Federation of Peasant Women
  • Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP)
  • Nurses Christian Fellowship Philippines
  • Asian Peasant Coalition

Drupal 6 is ready

j.nite's picture

I agree. Unless anyone has a compelling reason not to...I think it would make sense to use Drupal 6 for this event.

Cool D6. Who is the organizer?

Cebu

marcrobinsone's picture

Planning Drupal / Open Source events for Cebu at the code sprint is another goal (since some of our friends are coming all the way from Cebu).

So basically, we will be on the look-out for interested people/parties who would like to help in organizing events in Visayas/Mindanao simply because we cannot just fly to another city pronto (time, effort, price of ticket).

Personally, I miss Cebu and Palawan. Glad to know that Cebuanos are attending.

we'll attend this, along

Help with documention, testing

j.nite's picture

In addition to software development, we also need people to come and help with documentation and testing -- tasks which don't require any prior tech experience! So feel free to come and observe, but don't be surprised if we ask you to join us in documenting and/or testing our creations! ;)

Quick reminders before the code sprint

marcrobinsone's picture

Without making things too personal, it is always good to make sure that we are individually "ready to have fun".

Though it may sound just like fun & games, expect in the end that you will either be too exhausted or too bored.

To keep it cool be sure to take a look at a few nitty-gritties.

Before anything else, a brief xlist:

  • Did I sign-up? (if not, click the sign-up button on the main post above. List of names will be sent to the guard/reception)
  • Do I know how to get there? (MRT / Taxi alert!)
  • Laptop / Workstation (optional but highly recommended)
  • WebDev Software (Mac / Linux users: be sure to have your *AMP ready)
    • if you're theming, bring your graphics kit
    • if you're coding, check your version control client
    • text-editor (or i.d.e.)
  • Et Al
    • comfy clothes
    • pasalubong to share (yum! --optional but not required)
    • energy drink
    • camera

Strictly no pets allowed.
