So let's set up some sort of steady monthly meetup! I don't even know what to do at a meetup, but I would love to collaborate with fellow drupalers, talk about job opportunities, learn the tricks of the trade, etcetera.
I have a great space in Winston-Salem that would be perfect for meetups. I work in the building where the Community Arts Cafe is housed, and the owner is always interested in getting good groups meeting there. He's got a great beer/wine/coffee bar as well, and usually caters foot for larger groups as well. There's a pull-down screen for projectors (if needed) and plenty of comfortable setting.
Anyone interested? We could maybe find a way to rotate locations, since previous discussions usually had people from further away not willing to go to Winston (which I understand, I couldn't really make a lot of trips to Asheboro!).
Let's talk about it, anyone?

A monthly meeting is a good idea
It seems we don't get much done unless we schedule it. Once it's on the schedule it's a no brainer. Meeting less than once a month does not create any momentum. So I'm in favor.
Cool, I know that feeling,
Cool, I know that feeling, I'm of the same mindset - I do bookings for bands for a living, and sometimes, you just have to pick a date to get them to commit! :)
I just wanted to make sure there would even be enough interest before doing that, but let's go ahead and throw out a few arbitrary dates. Here are some where the venue I have access to would be open in the upcoming month:
Monday evenings after 5:00 - Nov. 7, 14, 21
Wednesday evenings after 5:00 - Nov 9, 16
Thursday evenings really anytime - Nov 10, 17
Again, I've never done a meetup before, I would like to have some people involved that may have done one before, or been involved in some way, if they're interested in helping out!
Count me in
I agree, let's commit to something regular. Having a place to meet that's available regularly is a great start. I'm available most evenings if it's scheduled ahead, just not Thursdays.
Evenings
Thursdays typically don't work for me; most other evenings would be fine. I work 9-6, but I can get off a little early once in a while -- as long as it's on my work calendar before Monday morning of that week.
Just let me know when and where.

Regular meetups
I'm all for getting something regular set up. Thursdays can be a little rough for me as well, but any other day after 6 works fine. Having a regular place would also be nice, especially one where we could order drinks and have access to a projector screen. Does anybody have a projector they could bring?
As far as what we do, our meeting scheduled for tonight (discussed here) has a few topics the group chose that we will give introductions on and discuss. Feel free to drop in.
The topics for tonight are:
Drush
Local Dev Environment Options
Theming basics
We are meeting at La Quinta in Greensboro at 6pm.
This is great, glad to see
This is great, glad to see everyone interested, and especially glad to see everyone's pretty much available on similar days! Pretty much all those Wednesdays are looking pretty good to me now, so I'm going to go ahead and narrow that down to either Wednesday, Nov 9 or 16.
As far as how this works, I'm not a drupal expert - I'm pretty good with most aspects of Drupal 6, but I don't know if I would be someone to actually be the host - I'm more of a "I can help get everyone together" guy and the "I know where we can meet" guy!
I'm saying this so that some of you other guys could either A - let me know what else would be expected of me since I'm trying to make this happen, or B - help me out! :)
meetups
Sounds pretty good. If you're able to make it tonight, it would be a good final topic.
Sorry james_g, I
Sorry james_g, I unfortunately had prior obligations tonight (I could have gotten out of them if I'd know about this sooner, but for whatever reason, tonight's meetup completely slipped me by!). I would still love to hear about any thoughts or ideas you have on how best to proceed with this!

Picking the Next Date
Quick thanks to everyone who made it to last nights meeting...
Special Thanks to James for the Drush Intro, and John for his presentation on Local Dev with Acquia.
We are looking forward to a more structured meeting schedule, and we are glad to have 'B' onboard and helping with the meeting venue.
Everyone last night agreed with Wednesday nights with a start time around 6:15pm (to allow for drive time). So the question right now is the 9th or the 16th? My vote would be for the 16th (but the 9th would work for me also).
I will send out another thread to come up with an agenda.

A little bit of structure
I have some ideas for the structure of meetings.
At every meeting we should have something for everyone. Beginners, intermediates, and advanced. That way every meeting will be interesting to everyone. I'm interested in aesthetic design as well as functionality. I was hoping we would have time to look at a website to see how it was done. We didn't have time, so I gave out a card at the end with a website to examine. I realize now I could have just put it in a post. The content of the website may not be interesting to most of you since it deals with my own spiritual interests, but it was done with Drupal and has some nice design elements. The website is htttp://nithyananda.org.
Maybe each month we could analyze a website and see how it was done.
Here are my suggestions for meeting structure:
1. Brief intro for newbies - resources for learning. We don't need to duplicate everything that's out there, but we can point to it.
2. Aesthetic design and theming. Choosing a framework (like Fusion). Using a CSS grid system (like 960.gs). Typography and other design elements. Graphic design tools and sources for graphical content. Outsourcing design for those not interested in developing design skills.
3. Functional design and programming tools.
4. Advanced development tools.
5. Analyzing a website. Problems and problem solving. Bring your problems.
These are just a few ideas that may give some structure to building an agenda for each meeting. Do you have any ideas to add?
We may not be able to go in depth with each of these ideas at every meeting, but we could touch upon them and direct people to resources that we know about that others may not know about.
Thanks again to everyone who came to the meeting. Let's spread the word and bring more people in.
Sarvasri - I love all of
Sarvasri - I love all of that. I especially like the idea of having a particular website each month to analyze and study, especially if I am to assume that we could have questions about "how did that website do XXX," and hopefully get some answers!
For some of that stuff, would we typically divide up into groups to talk about things? Such as, beginners are on one side, more advanced users on the other, talking about different things? Or everyone is always involved?
For the date, my vote also goes for the 16th. That gives a bit of time from the one you guys had last night.
Lastly, I've already spoken with the owner of the place here in Winston, and he's excited for everyone to show up. He did want to make sure I mentioned that he has a full coffee, beer, and wine bar, and they have sandwiches and baked goods. They don't allow outside food (they've had some problems in the past with the legalities of that - plus, he's trying to run a business). I can personally vouch for the quality of everything here - the owner's wife is a professional caterer, and she does all the cooking, baking, etc for the place.
For some information (and in case anyone wants to stop by sometime and check the place out), it's called The Community Arts Cafe, located at 411 W. 4th Street, Winston Salem. It's on the lower level, and there are several rooms we could use, depending on the size of crowd that comes - one room comfortably seats 12 - 20 people around tables, the atrium seats up to about 50 around tables, and there's actually a venue that's currently not being used on Wednesday nights, and it seats around 100 at tables. There is reserved parking in the back of the building, and if that fills up, there's a huge parking lot across the street that's free after 6:00 PM.
How long do the meetings typically last, and how many people do you suppose we could expect?
Does everyone think the 16th looks good and we could schedule that? If so, I'll go ahead and request the date on the calendar.
Good ideas!
Good ideas, Sarvasri and Ishmayl. I'm especially interested in discussing particular sites to understand how they work and in helping folks to solve problems they're having. I like the idea of having "something for everyone," so all levels can take away something new.
Some ideas for topics I would like to see discussed include developing a theme, and converting a website from WordPress (or other platform).
Some things I have more familiarity with and would be happy to share my experience with: using a wiki for documentation (not Drupal per se, but very helpful); setting up a testing environment in Ubuntu Server using VirtualBox; running Drupal on Windows Server.
The 16th of November works for me.
Date and Structure
The 16th works for me. FYI the triangle group (TRIDUG) meets from 7-9PM with a 6:30 meet chat etc setup.
Something that might be interesting also is an "Module a Month" featured wher someone can present a module they like using, and describe any stumbling blocks or problems they encountered while installing and configuring that will save future users from the same issues.
These are all awesome ideas!
These are all awesome ideas! bmorgan, I especially would like to hear ideas on converting from one CMS (particularly joomla - my current job has 2 sites on joomla that I would like to convert) to drupal 6 or 7.
So, since it's looking like the 16th is a good date, I'm going to go ahead and book the time - I'll just set it for from 6:00 - 9:00 if you guys think that's a good block.
-Brandon
EDIT: Oh, and just in case the info I gave about the place (up above) wasn't clear, the Community Arts Cafe has food and beverages available - they can also do special caterings (but that probably wouldn't be necessary for this?) - but they always sandwiches, baked goods, and tons of drinks available (for sale). It's a full deli restaurant with coffee/beer/wine bar.
All Great Suggestions for Next Meeting - BUT?
Is there anyone who would like to volunteer to give a 30 - 45 minute presentation? Topic of your choice?

Site Administration Modules
I would be willing to cover some modules that would help with site administration.
Ray
I'm not at a level that I
I'm not at a level that I would comfortable doing this yet, but I'm happy to do any sorts of other organizing, introductions, planning that's needed. Maybe in a short time, after I've goofed around with a few of the media modules I'm working extensively on right now, I may be able to do something with that, but not quite yet!
From Photoshop to subtheme
I will work on putting something together about how to take a Photoshop PSD and turn it into a subtheme -- but I can't promise that I'll get that done in time for the Nov. 16 meeting. When I have my presentation ready, I'll let you know. (I've been a computer trainer since the age of 20; I'm fairly particular about putting together a presentation that I feel is good enough to take pride in as a trainer.)

That sounds awesome! I've seen a presentation before on taking a photoshop file and converting to basic html/css, but never been involved with a drupal theme doing the same thing. I really look forward to seeing this.
We've got 4 signups so far,
We've got 4 signups so far, anyone else planning on coming?
RayAdams, did you have any particular modules in mind that you would like to cover, or were you looking for requests?
November Meetup
I'll be there. I'm game for talking a little about the Omega Theme, its flexibility, and it's built in mobile adaptation. Is there a projector, or a large screen monitor. that we can use to view presentations?
I'd love to hear about Omega
I'd love to hear about Omega theme - in fact, one of the next big tasks I have coming up is creating a mobile version for one of my sites.
There is a projector in the large venue room, but he keeps it in the large venue room - I'll see if he can make it available for us.
I'm Planning to Attend
I'm planning to attend.
I presume this is at the Community Arts Cafe in Winston. Lower level.
That's correct!
That's correct!
Tentatively planning
I'm tentatively planning to attend; I'll know better by the end of this week whether I'll be able to make it next week or not.
By the way, anyone have stories about transitioning sites from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7? That's something I've been assigned to research at my job.
Katrina
Site builder, writer, trainer, graphic designer
I don't have any stories like
I don't have any stories like that, though I am in the middle of doing that (I suck at telling stories).
So, are we looking at about 5 people making it?
Tomorrow
I'll be there. With Katrina not being able to make it, I can speak a little bit about mobile. I tend to lean towards writing themes from scratch, though.
Tomorrow
So,
Ray is talking about various D6x admin theme setups that organize and streamline administration (if I remember the presentation from Dcamp Spartanburg) James will talk mobile development. Any others? I said I would talk about Omega. (Although my experience is somewhat limited.) I think we should firm up the next three monthly meeting dates at this meeting. Does anyone have a problem with moving the meetings to the 2nd Wednesday of the month or the 4th Wednesday of the month rather than the third. The Triangle group meets the 3rd Wednesday, and I'd like to be able to attend their meetups periodically.
Today
Something came up with a client. I'm gonna need to miss tonights meetup. I agree on getting the next dates set. I'll be happy to give a presentation over something.. mobile if nobody else is there to do it.
Have a good meeting!
I'm definitely okay with
I'm definitely okay with going ahead and planning the next few meetings. I also have no problem whatsoever with whatever day we do it on.
I don't have anything to talk about for this meeting, but I plan on possibly talking about a couple different things over the next few months.
Can't make it
I won't be able to make it this month; I don't get off work until 6 p.m., and Winston-Salem is an hour's drive for me (one way), so I wouldn't be able to get there until 7 p.m. at the earliest. Maybe next time.

It was great meeting you guys
It was great meeting you guys last night.
It sounds like though the location was a good place to meet, it's not in the most convenient city for everyone. We discussed rotating venues to include Greensboro and High Point. We would also like to meet on second Wednesdays so as we aren't meeting the same night as the Triangle group.
So for dates, second Wed next month would be Dec 14. Is that a date that works for everyone? And if so, where would we like to hold the meeting?
As for agendas, we talked about several things we would like to discuss in the future.
I think we were all definitely interested in hearing more about the Omega theme and its capabilities from JJ.
I would also like to possibly do a presentation on Dashboards - after our discussion last night, it sounds like something that would be very useful, and I'm particularly interested in it.
I hear that james is the king of drush, and I would love to hear more about that!
As well, it sounds like everyone has heard of Katrina's abilities in transposing a photoshop design into a drupal theme (I believe that's right?). Would definitely like to hear more about that as well.
Let's go ahead and get something set up so we can all make it next time.
Cheers!
-Brandon
Sorry I missed it
Sounds like you all had a great and productive meeting. Sorry I couldn't make it.
For December, I'll work on putting something together about taking a Photoshop PSD and turning it into a subtheme in Drupal. (The company I work for has been using Fusion, but I'm thinking of trying out Adaptive Theme for our next project -- and I really like what I've seen in Omega on D7, though I'm just getting my feet wet in D7 ... and Omega.)
I'm trying to buy a house in High Point, which will put me closer to Winston-Salem -- if we have a meeting there again. I made an offer on the house last Friday; I'm currently trying to get the paperwork together that I need for the mortgage loan.

Awesome!
I'm perfectly happy to rotate locations, but I would love to meet back in Winston again, I really think the location is a great place for groups to meet up.
Looking forward to seeing mroe about your photoshop conversions! What version of photoshop do you use?
Photoshop
I currently have Photoshop CS3; financially, I can't afford to upgrade every time there's a new version, so I use what works until an upgrade becomes absolutely necessary.

Oh, I understand, CS3's what I've been using (and Gimp) for several years now.
December 14th Meeting
Are we thinking that December 14th will be the date for the next meeting. I would like to setup an event that members can use to Signup (so we can gauge how many will attend). We can also add the agenda to that event as well.
I will be able to make the 14th and will be happy to cover some of the modules that help Site Builders use in administration of the site. I would also like to see a continuance of Drush Learning - I can talk about Drush_Make and Profiles. Although I don't want to prepare for both for the December Meeting.
Ray
Dec 14 is great for me. I'm
Dec 14 is great for me. I'm planning on working a bit with Dashboard over the next month, so while I won't have anything to talk about on it by Dec 14, I should in January.
And I'm definitely interested in hearing more about drush.
Is Winston Salem where we would like to meet again? We can make the meeting a bit later (start at 7:00 instead of 6:30?) if that will help people. Otherwise, where else would we like to consider?
