Hi

just wondering if and when everyone is going to be migrating their sites to drupal 7. There seems to be a lot more modules with working versions or at least beta versions for 7 and D7 replaces the need for a lot of mandane (yet important ) modules.

So just out of interest is everything thinking of migration and if not what are the main concerns for not moving yet?

Also anyone know any best practices for migrating content or have a site that has information on methodology to moving content from one drupal database to another, as there can be ( from what i have experienced ) a greater advantage of moving the content onto a fresh D7 base then actually performing a drupal update. If you disagree please let me know why.

We're not migrating to 7,

We're not migrating to 7, instead we're aiming for a D6 to D8 migration. We're really comfortable with D6 and I see no convincing benefit of moving to D7. In cases where the website is functioning perfectly and serving the organization or business, we don't upgrade. Instead we maintain the Drupal core at the latest version of that release -- until the business/project requires functionality that is beyond or just to complicated to build in that release.

With regards to upgrade, I always look at the level of complexity in Drupal's configuration for the project. Is it just a website or a full featured application? With the latter, we build the entire application on the new version of Drupal then migrate relevant data. It's a much cleaner approach than upgrading and I definitely prefer this method.

For a simple website just running upgrade.php on a test site with crossed fingers can be a time saver, so be sure to try that out before anything else.

I emptied my head of all the reasons I'm not eager to embrace D7. When reviewing D7 I found many awesome advances, but it soon became clear that D7 was built for the end user. We build applications on Drupal and D6 continues to satisfy all our requirements.

Here is some good advice ..
