Hello All

Still in hangover of Drupal India Camp which took place on Sat (31st Jan 09) in Pune!

It was wonderful to see such an eager & enthusiastic crowd (over 300) gathering & discussing Drupal for the whole day. Good sessions & great interactions with everyone!

Hearty thanks to all the organizers for their efforts & zeal to make the camp successful!

I wish to take our discussion from the last session online on the India Group on groups.drupal.org/india (i.e. here!)

The discussion in our last session was - How to build a strong Drupal community in India? This gave rise to several related discussions

  • How to connect with all the Drupal developers in India
  • How to build strong bond within the community
  • How should we use a combination of online & offline platforms & forums to achieve this
  • What should be the components & activities of these forums
  • .... and many more...

I strongly feel that we should hold this discussion at an online place (preferably this group)... conclude the discussion positively in a defined timeframe(!) and should end up with a concrete, achievable task list....

What do you all say?

Prasad

Let's do it!

Greetings Prasad and everyone!

Drupal Camp in Pune was an awesome event and I arrived back home in Mysore last night quite content and excited about our blossoming Drupal community in India and its future.

Several of us carried on the discussion about how and where to keep connected in between the camps, building bonds, sharing news etc. as you mentioned and we came to the same conclusion — right here on http://groups.drupal.org/india is the best place to get ball rolling.

Among other ideas I think a nice point to start is to try and get all the Indian Drupal Developers, or aspiring developers, we know (or know of) to strongly consider subscribing to this group and putting a few minutes into their profile page. A profile picture and a little bit of info goes a long way in helping everyone remember faces and who's who. I'd love to know everyone by name and be more acquainted the next time we all meet up.

Another component / activity of this group I think would be great is the sharing of work/project related stuff. It would be really cool to be able to see what others' are working on or have done, and share the same myself.

Thanks!

Absolutely

Lets try to make this group more usable by laying out content semantically (read, filter out jobs from list and put them in a different block). A long list with so many job posting kinda puts me off.

Tracking Drupalers in India

kevin.gomes's picture

Hi,
How about tracking all the Drupalers on a Map. Say initially the place they come from. There'll be a Google Map with Users plotted as icons on the Map. Click on the Icon and a Popup shows up showing some basic information about the User and a link to his complete profile.

The GMap Module helps do this.

I guess the Google Visualization API is too good for data visualizations.

Yes, the Map UI is very useful, and is powerful with the right kind of Applications. For example: Sumit was talking about an Election Website to publish information about the General Elections. Here we can use a Map to show the Constituencies; Candidates are applying from. We can show an Intensity Map of the number of votes received by a Party across the country. Any analysis that needs Geographic Extents to be considered!

Can we install the GMap module for our Group?

I like the idea, but...

jhebel's picture

are you talking about implementing this on another drupal india type of site? I am assuming that level of customization is impossible on Drupal Groups, therefor I ask.

Can't we manage the modules?

kevin.gomes's picture

Are there any restrictions to installing new modules in our group?

We can't install new modules

vaish's picture

We can't install new modules here so the only option for using maps would be to implement it on a separate web site.

I like the idea and I think we should still consider it, but would suggest to first come up with a list of features that we can't have here and we consider indispensable for our community. That will give us a clearer idea in which way to procede.

Learned a lot from the Camp
