My views slideshow is taking over my front page

Hey guys! I've been trying to update a boatload of modules and core and I keep running into issues. Today, I was updating one module at a time (trying to isolate the problem) and all of a sudden the slideshow on my front page over took my right sidebar. I went in and restored all the files, but that didn't fix it. Any ideas how to troubleshoot. I went in the view and everything looks fine. I cleared the cache too. You can see what it's doing at bitterrootpubliclibrary.org.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A few things

I'm not on my regular computer, so it's a bit difficult to diagnose from here. I've got a few pointers for ya, though:

  • Just replacing the old files/code won't necessarily downgrade you to previous module versions. If the new modules ran database updates, you'd need to restore a backup copy of your database to roll back any changes.
  • There is an image size bug fix in the latest version of Drupal core (7.9) which may have caused your issue or, if you're not yet at 7.9, may help resolve your issue.
  • The layout bug doesn't seem to affect every browser. Looked good at a glance in Firefox, but broken in Mobile Safari (iOS).
  • The change most likely stems from an update to Views, Views Slideshow, and/or core. If you've got a solid backup in place, go ahead and get those all to their most recent versions (Views has a recent security update) and test the layout again. Make sure you run database updates and clear the cache multiple times after updating.
  • If everything is up to date and that's the worst bug, then you've little to worry about. A simple CSS tweak should solve it for you.

Let me know if you're still having trouble tomorrow, and I'll see what I can do.

Oh...one more thing...

Never run these updates for the first time on your live site. You're just asking for a world of hurt. Always test those (and all) updates on a separate code base and database set aside strictly for testing and development. Once you're sure changes and updates apply cleanly, then you can go ahead and proceed with them on your live site. Easier said than done, I know. It's vitally important, however.

Thanks Scott, You were

Thanks Scott,

You were absolutely right. I restored the db and it went right back to normal. I'm not sure why I'm having so much trouble updating (and it's the freaking calendar again!!), but I totally hear what you're saying about having a test site, but I have been completely unsuccessful at setting up a test site. I have a few ideas on how to accomplish testing before going live, but they are all not perfect. But, I'll make it work! :)

Thanks again for keeping my site working. I was freaking out!

Calendar had some pretty

Calendar had some pretty significant changes a while back that caused me to have to do some pretty serious rebuilding of calendars on a few sites. :-(

I can help you with a test site sometime. Basically, it just means a copy of your site code and a copy of your database running on another server...locally or online somewhere.

Glad you're up and running again.
