#drupal-augusta irc channel?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This thought passed me by the other night. I was pondering on how it would be to create a channel on irc.freemode.net for our group.

The first part being, how we would do that, and then the other part being, how could we take that and make it beneficial to our work.

Mainly, I was thinking that having the channel would be a good way for those that couldn't attend a meet-up, physically, to be able to "attend." Also, it could be a place, in the eventually of growth in our group, for us to have a channel to be able to chat and discuss drupal-related stuff or whatnot during stints on drupal irc.

Any ideas, guys?

I took a look into channel creation with freenode.net...

i took a look into how to create a channel within the freenode.net server.

there's a bit of "paperwork" to fill out, which leads me to propose that in the next meeting we discuss how we can and if we should use the service.

i don't mind at all taking charge and initiating the service, but, it would suck to go through all the work and nobody used it.

but, i think it's a swell idea.

that's a good idea. i'm one of those guys who've never used irc. in principle, i prefer to post on g.d.o for the augusta group - however, i'm not opposed to having both options available, as the question is not a matter of using one or the other.

As you guys are aware I use

As you guys are aware I use IRC on the daily bases and really enjoy using it as a communication channel. However I am not sure how useful it would be to our relatively small community. If everyone thinks they would actually use it sure I like the idea. Also you guys at Morris do you think you will be able to get IRC open? Just some thoughts.

I like the idea, especially for ad-hoc whiteboarding.

Morris folks can use Mibbit, which runs in the browser on port 80.

I'll go ahead and start getting us registered in freenode.net.

I guess the key would be what we would like to call the channel. I was kinda aiming at something like #drupal-augusta, #drupal-csra, or even #drupal-georgiaUS.

I'm more for the later but, you guys feel free to give me some feedback before i make anything official. This is our group BTW. :)

Let me know.

OK! Submitted! :)

I went ahead and submitted a request to freenode.net for the #drupal-augusta channel. Pending on my future communication with those that maintain the freenode server, we'll see how things progress.

I do, however encourage those of you out there to donate to the service to be able to help the drupal community, as well as our group, to help freenode continue to be free! :)

I plan on making a contrib donation, soon.

I will keep everybody up to date as to the channels development. :)

Soungs good to me.
